BEHIND THE SCENES INFO:
I wrote the first draft of this in 2015 after playing Mass Effect to see what all the hubbub was about. Musically, I think of it as being a close cousin of my earlier songs “Meet Me in the Dungeon, Dear,” ”The Bioshock Song,” and ”The Bioshock Infinite Song’ since it has the same vocal style and a similarly outdated (read: COOL) musical style. I began to burn out on CZcams in 2015 and this song fell by the wayside. But with Season 12 in full swing, I just had to finally do it justice! And one more thing: If this song sounds vaguely familiar, that’s because it’s HEAVILY influenced by Tom Lehrer’s 1965 song “The Vatican Rag.” Thanks for watching!
-------------
LYRICS:
LEND YOUR EAR AND HEAR A TALE ABOUT THE FUTURE OF OUR RACE
WHERE A (PERSON) WHO’S A (GENDER) AND (ANOTHER THING) GOES TO SPACE
AND UNCOVERS THESE DISCOVERIES ABOUT AN ANCIENT TIME AND PLACE
OH WHAT A MASSIVE TREK, GARNERING MAD RESPECT, THAT’S THE MASS EFFECT RAG!
FIGHT AGAINST A GETH OR TURIAN, IT IS QUITE THE MESS THAT YOU’RE IN
LOOK AROUND AND TAKE A WALK AND JUST
TALK AND TALK AND TALK AND TALK AND TALK AND TALK AND
JELLYBEASTS AND GREEN SALARIANS HOPE THAT YOU’RE THE MEANS TO THEIR ENDS
YOU MAY LIVE TO SHOOT ANOTHER DAY IF YOUR SQUAD WILL SCOOT OUT OF THE WAY
BE A PARAGON OR RENEGADE, USE YOUR CHARM OR CHOOSE “INTIMIDATE”
RACKIN’ UP THE XP, CLIMBIN’ UP THE TECHS TREE, DOIN THE MASS EFFECT RAG!
SO…
THERE’S THIS HUGE GALACTIC CRISIS YOU MUST FIX IMMEDIATELY
FIRST THOUGH, VISIT RANDOM PLANETS, HEY, THEY MIGHT CONTAIN… DEBRIS!
YOU’LL DRIVE NEAR AND FAR IN A BOUNCY CAR THAT HANDLES UH-DISTINCTIVELY
KEEP THE GAS IN CHECK, DON’T GO TOO FAST AND WRECK
DOIN’ THE MASS EFFECT RAG!
MIND-MELD WITH A GRIPING LADY SQUID, SPY UPON A SKYPING KATYDID
CHOOSE ONE TEAMMATE, WATCH THE OTHER DIE
I RESET AND SCOTCHED THE OTHER GUY
HOW DO THEY TRAVERSE THE GALAXY?
WHAT WARPS TIME AND SKIRTS REALITY?
AMMUNITION GOES UNCHECKED, AND WHY?
MASS EFFECT, MASS EFFECT, MASS EFFECT
ARE THESE BUGS WHAT MAKE IT BUGGY?
ARE THESE CHUGS WHAT MAKE IT CHUGGY?
THAT’S THE MASS, AND DON’T YOU GIVE ME NO SASS
EVERY BLUE BOOBY BABY DO THE MASS EFFECT RAG!
BAG ‘EM, AND TAG ‘EM, AND DO THAT RAG! - Hudba
Great work, Brentalfloss! This is my new favorite Mass Effect parody song on the Citadel!
(I should go.)
Folks, this video got the Mark Meer Seal of Approval! ✨
(If you don't know that name, you should, because he was THE VOICE OF MALE COMMANDER SHEPARD! 😱 😎)
Thanks so much, Mark!
We'll Bang Ok?
All I can say Mark, is that you made the last 10 years of my life better with your portrayal of Shepard
What makes lawns grow? Grass Effect.
What makes students smarter? Class Effect.
What happens when you mix copper and zinc? Brass Effect.
What happens after you eat at Taco Bell? Gas Effect.
Why'd my parents ground me? Sass effect.
How did I do in school? Pass effect.
What do I always catch? Bass effect.
A old way to say a young woman? Lass Effect
Why do I curse so much? Crass Effect.
How do I get drunk in the Old West? Sassafras Effect
What happens when you heat up sand? Glass effect.
Whats a name for the rear end? Ass effect.
I'm Commander Sheppard and this is my favorite song in the Citadel!
"Mass Effect, Mass Effect, Mass Effect"
"Genuflect, genuflect, genuflect"
:D
I got that! I understood that reference.
Caught me right away too.
Doin' the Vatican Raaaaag!
"[The Mako] handles, uh... distinctively!"
Honestly, I loved driving that thing around. It sucked, yes, but it was magical.
the mako was designed constructed and painted by Lucifer himself.
@@chaseszombies6056 That's giving the man too much credit. He is merely the engine, the suspension is hell incarnate, and then the rest of the car is just pure torture given form.
The thing is, the Mako itself is fine, it's a beast, it legit helped save the day in game. The problem is the level design of planets you use the mako on are awful 90% of the time and that's what makes driving the mako much worse.
@@WolfWarrior623 the mako and nomad will be my tools to reign destruction on the galaxies.
@@WolfWarrior623 Very fair.
They say to this day, Commander Sheppard is still on that elevator still trying to go up just one floor.
“Choose one team mate, and watch the other die. (I reset and scorched the other guy.)”
Lol
Brentalfloss confirmed simp.
@@EclipsisTenebris wwwwhat?
@@Drp_br_ He's going way too far for Ashley, a woman that isn't worth the effort. Absolute definition of a simp.
@@EclipsisTenebris oh
@@EclipsisTenebris ...ok
I've never played Mass Effect, but this seems like an accurate representation of what little I know!
The first game is a classic. The second and third are decent, but they kind of fumble the overall plot.
@@nicolasleroux5302 But they have much better character writing. In fact, I'd argue that the sequels surpass the first game in many aspects. After all, there is a good reason why Mass Effect 2 is considered the best among the three.
@@vlad4o813 I understand that most people see ME2 as the best, but I disagree. The original was filled to the brim with ancient mysteries that were gradually uncovered as you explored. Each mission flowed seamlessly into the next as more pieces of the puzzle were gathered. The exploration and lore and attention to detail were fascinating. The villains were memorable and your character felt active and autonomous.
Although ME2 certainly had great characters, it also threw out every single plot element that made ME1 such a great sci-fi horror thriller. Indoctrination, prothean ruins, specters, and Shepherd’s curse were dismissed entirely. Instead of pursuing the “great space mystery” quest established in the original, ME2 became “the A-Team in space.” None of the recruitment missions were connected to the Collector Plot. Nothing new was learned about the Reapers. None of the plot threads established in ME1 were continued. The entire game felt like a spin-off.
Sorry for ranting lol
@@nicolasleroux5302 While it's true that Mass Effect 2 didn't progress the overarching plot and felt more like a spin-off, it did expand on the universe a lot and arguably did a much better job at worldbuilding compared to the first game.
The Geth for example were no longer generic one-dimensional AI villains, but an actually fleshed out and complex race with their own internal struggles. The Migrant Fleet was no longer just a thing we heard about, but actually got to see, as well as how Quarian society operated. We also got a lot more insight on the Genophage, something that was previously only brought up in several conversations, and only played a role during the Virmire level, and even that was short lived and quickly became irrelevant. And Indoctrination was still touched upon when exploring the Derelict Reaper.
Not to mention that it actually made the characters interesting and developed them, whereas in the first game they were just walking codex entries with next to no personality. The only characters that didn't fall into that category were Saren, Anderson, and Sovereign.
For all its flaws, Mass Effect 2 did a lot for the series and didn't just throw away everything that the first game established. It was far more than just a decent game.
@@vlad4o813 I see your point. The loyalty missions for Tali and Legion are two of the best moments in the entire trilogy. Bioware undeniably has amazing moment-to-moment writers who understand the cogs of drama. I’m just slightly disappointed because of the disconnect. ME1 was a plot-driven sci-fi horror mystery, ME2 was a character-driven “A-Team” action thriller, and ME3 was a political space opera. The original spoke to me the most and taught me the importance of establishing plot devices and characters as quickly and smoothly as possible.
These old timey songs are my favorite kind of genre you cover, like the Bioshock or Infinite songs! Awesome musical arrangements!
He should do more of these
@@jaketaller8567 oh yeah!
He used the chuggy to slow down into the bridge!
Thanks for noticing ☺️
Can this Rag wait?... I'm in the middle of some calibrations...
If you like this video, please SHARE IT with a fellow Mass Effect fan! 🚀
Great song brent!
I wish this video had more views, it's genuinely one of my favorite parody songs.
I mean, there's no evidence that eezo infusion _won't_ lead to a ragtime revival...
I don't know why the elevator camera dance made me laugh so much, but I'm glad it did.
"Nonbinary Earthlings"
Brent, I feel seen
👀
@@brentalfloss TFW senpai actually notices you
@@brentalfloss Thank you Brent
@@TheDiplomancer :o you too are an earthling?
What are the odds
Me too, omg ✨
"Handles distinctively" 😂
Haha I can't tell you how glad I am to find out you're still doing the thing you love Brent. Decided to indulge in music from my college years and binge all the old classics wondering if we'd ever get to see such gems again. Absolutely love it, hopefully one day you'll do UK conventions again once the pandemic clears, missed you at Alcon and was gutted!
This warmed my Mass Effect loving heart
And I say unto you:
"Tali is my pick of Mass Effect mate."
It's a shame it took 3 games to actually make her your mate XD
You got very good taste
But. But Liara... though i love Tali also.....
Its a shame these games don't have a harem option.
@@Krescentwolf Worth the effort!
Too bad that would require playing as male Shep.
Debris is all too true. Got a good laugh outta me~
Mass Effect is still one of my all time favorite video game series.
And great song Brent.
While watching the whole thing, I just kept thinking about Tom Lehrer's "Vatican Rag."
Looked in the description and was so excited to see it mentioned
Always Classic Brentfloss.
Nice song :D
This deserves so many more views, I think you do ragtag (not sure how to call it) exceptionally well and it's hilarious to boot.
We'll rag, okay?
This is gonna be in my head all night now 🤦♀️🤣
I can't help but think of the Vatican Rag everytime the genre is mentioned
Oh my god you saying “Vatican” on a brentalfloss video made me think of a video I haven’t thought about in a while: Priest Lightning. Only the real ones remember Priest Lightning.
Can this just become a Rag parody channel? I loved the Bioshock one too, and this is honestly another banger.
Lol after the viewcount on this one, I can't make that promise 😆
I, for one, can't wait to see Tali and Liara's Mass Effect Rack in HD
I just did a full playthrough of all the games and spot on! Keep up the awesome work.
Was trying to find this banjo guy ollie but the description lacked it. thankfully had it on loop and happened to scroll up and it is in the video.
I haven't had much contact with mass effect itself so this gave me more insight into the series than i had before.
The first game is available on Steam. It’s a great sci-fi story with a dash of Lovecraftian horror.
The extended elevator portion 😆
I think this may be your best work yet.
You should consider doing a Cuphead with lyrics.
It does seem a rather obvious game to pull from.
man I love me anything with a banjo thanks for this!
brent is back and better than ever, return of the king!
You can fight like a krogan, run like a leopard, but you'll never be better than Commander Shepard.
I have big respect for the very serious and complicated lore points that were explored here :p
game: exists
Brent: This would make a GREAT ragtime song!
(Spoiler: he's usually right)
"Usually" WRONG
I’m Commander Shephard, and this is my favorite channel on CZcams.
Can’t remember the last time I had a good chortle. Fantastic research on this one, talk&talk&talk etc was great. xD
That came out really well, loved working on this dude . thanks again
I love how you had best space wife Tali as your main dancer.
I really love your work Brent. And here's another nice lyric Video 🔥
Oh my god, a realistic shooter game getting an olde timey, fully original parody song? What year is it??? I’m living for brentalfloss Season 12.
I've never played a Mass Effect game or know anything about the series, but this is easily one of my favorite songs you've made. Seeing you come back this year has really helped me through 2020. Thank you so much, Brent!
Probably the most entertaining song I've ever heard
I'm so happy you made another rag, they're my favorites of your songs
Commenting for the algorithm
My dude!!! I am so happy you gave Mass Effect some love! It is a jaunty tune that I very much enjoyed. Thank you for still posting content during everchanging times! You are a treasure, Brent!
That was awesome! Thank you!
Sees Tali dancing solo in video
*I see you are a man of culture as well*
When my brother first saw the Mass Relay in Mass Effect 1's loading screen, he thought it was some kind of spaceship. Then the Normandy used it, and boy, was he surprised.🙀
You're on a roll with these videos, Brent, and your comedy makes the songs entertaining.
thats one mass effect
Yep it is
Makes me wonder what else brent has been sitting on this entire time!
Another instant classic hot off the Season 12 presses!
YES! I asked you so many years ago if you would ever do a Mass Effect song and this really delivered all that I wanted. Now how about using with lyrics and do the somber piano song from ME3 :p
Damn that was really catchy! I loved it!
I missed this stuff!
The fact this man sounds like Richard Gere is SENDING me
I have liked and heres is the comment. Because when I tell people to do the same they don't....You already got my sub! for years actually
"Masking those load times Mass Effect style." Dropping hints to upcoming songs I see. I'll have to keep my ears open better next time.
Yay super excited about this
Thank you Banjo Guy Ollie.
Ya still got it floss
"masking those load times mass effect style"
Some real nice syncopation in there!
Just delightful.
I lost it at the "bouncy car"
Gonna watch again.
Great video Brent can't wait for more
You know, as, uh, distinctive, as its handling might have been, I missed the Mako in ME2 and ME3.
Out of all the the quotes you forgot the most important one to randomly throw in.
"We'll bang okay?"
It’s from ME 2, that’s probably why. Same with “this is my favourite store on the citadel”. I think the 2nd one is where most of the quotes come from.
HA! Great.
Can't wait for songs for the other 2....and maybe the Dragon Age games
Duuuude, you've outdone yourself.
Mass effect in a nutshell
Love it brent!
First you get down on your knees
Fiddle with your rosaries
Bow your head with great respect and
Mass Effect Mass Effect Mass Effect.
It's no Comander Shepard or Take it back, but it's a pretty enjoyable little diddly you got there Brent!
Awesome job :D
Brent, you outdid yourself! This is so good!
This is great!
Oh boy, you are pampering really us! Thank you!
Nice work!
Loved it. Brent has grown so much as a musician.
Yes all of this is great. 🤯
That was awesome!
Love it!
This is the last goddamn song I expected from you.
Very nice work sir. Will you mention Mr Tom Lehrer’s influence?
Love the Ragtime! Might play the remastered one, since the old one looks... Unique
This is simply AMAZING.
that was excellent i love it when you sing a song in an older style like rag or blues.
1:22 me listening to this song
Boy I do love me some good rag in the mornin'
Yup, that scans.
Lovely! I miss Mass Effect 1. One of my all time favorite games. This song did it great justice!
