  • It's a marmite car, you'll either love or hate it. Looks aside though, it's another South Korean brand EV that just seems to have some thought behind it!

I've just bought a Hyundai electric second hand for £15k, I'm seeing 180 miles on a charge, I'm expecting 200+ in the warmer weather - from a 38 kWh battery pack. Regularly seeing 5 mp/kWh to 5.5 mp/kWh in the cold and rainy winter of the UK. I don't drive like a granny either. Whatever Hyundai did with that particular Ioniq, it's a shame they haven't been able to replicate it since.

Just taken delivery of the Ioniq 6 as equipped for the Australian market. After only a couple of days I've already gravitated towards the Eco mode for exactly the reasons stated in the video: it gives a more progressive acceleration and I'm less nervous about picking up a speeding ticket. When I develop more of a feel for the car then I might move back to Normal mode.
Love the car overall; agree about the annoying warning noises.

I am in Australia as well. I love this car and have similar vies. about it after driving it for almost a year. Normally use the eco-mode and generally go for sport if I need to really get it going for some reason, or in the winding road areas.

16:00 “what’s that bong?” - you’ve just passed a speed camera. Couple the speed camera detection with the love of deciding roads are suddenly 20 mph for 20 seconds of bing-bong stress where the car thinks you’re going to get a ticket for driving at 29 past a 30 mph speed camera.

Those wheels are the higher spec model with 19" wheels. My base-model has the 18" wheels. Both wheels are actually aero-covered; the 19" has black infills between the silver, so no major cleaning issues. The ride is really very good; better in the base-model with the deeper tyre profile, but all around a lot better than the Tesla. Tyre cost ?? No idea. All tyres are expensive these days. The crucial thing is how long they last.

I admire it for being different. A bit like the early Mercedes CLS. Bongs would drive me crazy. Why not give an option to turn the relentless things off? (And permanently off, not just per journey!) Asian manufacturers seem married to this bong culture long before the law mandates it, without the wit to make them optional. I would skip the e-wing mirrors, if considering one. Big discount on the list price, well detected. Will be even more attractive when access to the Tesla charging network is available. Thanks for the video review.

I'd have to try those camera-mirrors, but the big NO for me is that silly little slit-boot. If that had been a hatch-back, great. but you'd struggle to get a folded pram or wheelchair in there, and if you get one in, can you get it out again? And there's no chance it can take a bicycle for a one-off, as you don't have a rack. So it's still the MG5 estate for now - there's no competition!

The speed limit action was passed by the EU and agreed by UK at the time. It was actually meant to be originally active that won’t let you speed above the local limit on all roads but got watered down but only temporary as it’s to come next. They also wanted to have it retrofitted to older cars but that was too difficult a fit.

In my 2020 Defender this speed limit function was very annoying to the extent that JLR disabled it via an OTA update. My new 2023 Defender even tells me that “this function is not available in this region”. They also listened to owners who complained that the lane keep assist was too strong - I live in the countryside with lots of twisty narrow back roads and meeting a big tractor thundering down the road often means driving on the verge, but not with lane keep assist as it tries to fight you back onto the tar and straight into the path of the on coming tractor………… that was toned down somewhat in an OTA update and can now be switched to just a steering wheel vibration so you can still have it fully operational on dual carriageways and motorways. What I don’t understand with it is that the Satnav can tell you what sort of road it is so why can it not disable LKA completely until you drive on a dual carriageway or motorway? I see now that 2024 model year Land and Range Rovers are getting a sort of semi-autonomous driving system, lord help us as it’s already causing plenty of problems for those with the latest cars.

Nowhere in the EU legislation does it say that the warnings should be AUDIBLE. This is an interpretation by Hyundai. Warnings can be haptic, for instance, or even be vibrations in the pedal etc. I am guessing other manufacturers will choose to do this smarter than Hyundai.

    • @ssm445

Problem is that the haptic warning must be in the acceleration pedal, which the Ioniq is unable to do I guess. The steering wheel haptic feedback is not sufficient.

Those speed bongs are weird - on the similar GV60, on normal roads the only time it will bong is if you go over a speed limit that you’ve set manually. If you go over the road speed limit it just changes the colour of the speed limit from red to black or will flash it briefly if you have it set to ‘assist’ rather than ‘warn’.

Yeah, my Škoda thinks there's 30km/h speed limit on newly built motorway. And it ignores "120" sign at the entrance. Now that they dropped speed limit to 90 km/h for winter it picks-up the sign, but few kilometres further it suddenly picks up 30km/h limit from the depths of it's database (which probably was the limit on some small road which was parallel to this new one, and might not even exist anymore) and if I happen to be using cruise control, slams the brakes. Sign recognition ignores "end of ** limit" signs and and quite often has issues with 3-digit limits. And of course, if a sign is canceled out by some highway code rule (apparently more common in Easter Europe than in Western) car would follow the last seen sign for quite a while. And this one I've heard complains from a lot of people. Including Tesla owners.

A 50 WK charge in this, will cost at least £34, or more, Same 50KW charge in a Tesla will cost £17 pounds or less. No stalks, no problem you get used to it. So 50kw costs £34, after losses you'll add maybe 45 to the battery, so can probably go around 180 miles max on a run for £34. hmmmm....... I think I'll stick with my old 320d with its 55mpg. At £7.4 per gallon thats equivalent to approx 250 miles. Also depreciation is way better, and the engine will suffer only mild loss of performance over 10 years, as opposed to, say 30% loss of range.... and the Bimmer has a 600+ range and a 3 minute fill up will add the full 600 miles (whatever the weather, and without having to wait for a "handshake"), using EV terminology to make big numbers sound impressive that would be the equivalent of refilling at 12,000 miles per hour. Thats the target, so keep trying....

Why are they not making a normal door handles and normal buttons inside of the electric cars?
Do they think that all of the EV buyers are dumb or something?

Personally I like it, and would happily own one. As you rightly say, at least it's different. And I'd add to that by saying at least it's different and at least it's not an SUV. The only thing I found visually challenging are those hideous rear bumper overriders, I can't really think what purpose they're for, but even if they have one, why on earth are they silver against a black background?! I'd be rattle canning those in a heartbeat, utterly hideous

We've got a 2022 Model 3 standard range (with the slightly larger battery than 2021 cars). Have done around 35k in it so far and I would say the real world range is very similar to what you were reporting in the larger battery version of the 6.

@@Payteer yes, the Ioniq 6 only has a single size battery available in the UK. My point was that the current Tesla Model 3 standard range gets the same distance between charges to the Ioniq 6, whereas most people including in this video compare it to the Model 3 Long Range.

The ioniq 6 is £30k in the USA so the UK price inc tax would be £36,600, not £47,000. Even if the USA model is the 54kwh battery, £10k is an Apple-like price bump! With the range / efficiency being so bad, I’m going cold on this car. I’ll stick with my 4.4m/kwh MINI.

I saw the Hyundai Ioniq 6 at a dealer in town last week, didn't know what it was, walking towards it, coming up from behind, and I thought.. "this car looks great!".. then I walked round the side and thought "what the frig is happening with the designers"... then got to the front and.... it's just all wrong... and walked away... the rear side view , it's a miss mash of design elements, making it look too fussy, and them wheels.... nasty.. looks like they could be on a Christmas tree as decoration...

It's just so ugly, even worse in the metal. I'll have my IONIQ 5 paid off next year, and can't see me getting shot of it any time soon. Even if it does have the same, God awful slow infotainment as the 6 (criminal that Hydundai haven't given it the newer, faster, Nvidia powered system), it's been a brilliant car that is marginally less divisive in terms of its looks!
Thankfully my 2021 car doesn't have the speed limit nag-bong, I only have one annoyance to deal with (LKA), though as you mention it's easy to turn off on the steering wheel. On my previous car (A-Class) it was buried deep in the menus somewhere, used to drive me crazy!
