The words (though not the melody) of this refrain are adapted from an old traditional folk tune. It's sometimes recorded as its own song ("Who's Gonna Shoe"), but it also often appears as a verse in other songs (i.e. "John Henry")
Ballad nerdery alert: As I suspect you (Astrid) would know but others may not, the refrain goes back to Child Ballad 76 (a.k.a. Roud 49) "The Lass of Roch Royal". Its first printed variant appeared in the early 1800s but it could well have originated before that. It tells the heartbreaking story of lovers kept apart. She is pregnant or has a newborn and seeks the father; she finds his home, but his mother lies about his whereabouts and sends her away; the young mother dies exposed to the elements; her lover dreams of her, wakens, learns from his mother that she had been there, desperately seeks her, finds her dead, and dies himself. As with many old ballads, the long narrative fell away over time, leaving the core refrain which stood as a song in itself, or a motif added to other songs. From a dozen or so variants collected in the British Isles, it exploded into dozens upon dozens in the US. No matter how stripped down, they virtually always involve lovers who are apart or parting. In the original context the refrain comes from the young mother - it amounts to "who will take care of me", and no-one who answers besides her lover will do. I much prefer the versions like your most lovely one, where the refrain expresses aspiration and hope rather than despair. PS You pure tones and vibrato remind me of a young Joan Baez, but are all your own. A total delight to hear.
I was having some suicidal ideations and ended up on one of those Sumerian kicks and came across your video on Darmok episode 109 Star Trek I believe anyway keep singing dancing and being an inspiration to a cruel world

Wonderful- the “I’m a scientist” “I’m just a delightful person” “oh, I’m a musician too” crossover we didn’t know we needed
Thanks, I feel better now.

Well, that was unexpected. And beautiful. Some of the lyrics remind me of Kingsport Town by Bob Dylan.
