It took awhile for Bioware to officially recognize FemShep. I knew nothing about Comet until this video. Here’s hoping SE makes use of her.
The Warrior of Light is totally a girl! I see her every time I log in.
Interesting... This is the first time I've heard about Comet. The more you know.
Same, I also have never heard of Derplander referred to as "Meteor" before.
@@0Fyrebrand0 The full name was basically Meteor Survivor.
Comet deez nuts!
Wow actually. I like that name dichotomy. Meteor and Comet? That's sick.
Although we experience the game through Vaan's eyes, Ashe is arguably (one of) the main protagonist of FFXII. Dunno how you missed her.
Honestly, even the message at the end was beautiful. (Also thank you for saying Freya as a great female Final Fantasy character. It pains me to see so many people overlook her for just Beatrix and Dagger in FFIX. I don't care she is a Rat, she is my favorite character in FFIX and no its not about the looks of the character I love! Her story is touching and sad.)
Playing 9 for the first time as we speak and she is my favorite! (Also my sweet child Vivi who must be protected at all costs!) So a big ol HEAR, HEAR!
@@Callithyia
Of course, cannot forget the baby Vivi!
She may be a rat, but she's OUR rat.
Interesting, seeing as how they even brought back the female elezen that had MINIMAL screen time from the 1.0 trailer into the story, (Shadowbringers Role quests), and how they repurposed the FFXI seekers of Aldouin cover girl and the guy from the 1.0 / ARR logo for Omega I can see them absolutely doing something with her, probably maker a new "rival" character or the hero from another shard that is still around once we visit it.
I'd love to see Comet make a comeback in future Expansion Trailers and maybe even take their place alongside us in our future adventures!
I actually settled on playing a female hyur for my WoL because i have main character syndrome but I wanted to play a female character. Mine looks different than the original Comet character but similar to Meteor still (dark brown hair, same eye color etc.). And I love her to death!
I would honestly like to see a single-player Final Fantasy game where you can create your own protagonist, like you do in FFXI and FFXIV. I'm fine with NPCs not saying my name in voiced dialogue scenes, or my own character not even having a voice -- but alternatively, you could also do it like Mass Effect where you have one male and one female voice actor for the protagonist, and NPCs refer to you as "Commander Shepard" or something while you can make up your own first name. Actually, if we could somehow go back in time and get a Final Fantasy game that was made in partnership with BioWare back when they were in their prime, that would be really interesting to see.
In FFXI, there were a pair of humes (hyurs) on the instruction manual. The female was basically what the FFXIV one (or Comet) looks like.
Plenty of shards left, like Ardbert of 1. We even missed the Warrior of Darkness from the 13th. Or the demi-priest from the 13th...
So much room for Comet to legit appear...
While I know it was confirmed that Zero's appearance is based on Vampire Hunter D, I think they still took notes from the female WoL model; otherwise why make the character female with a similar appearance. The similarities between them, and the analogy between Ardbert of the First and Zero of the Thirteenth are too prevalent for them to be mere coincidences.
I appreciate the commentary about branching out with what our heroes look like. Meteor's fine, but this girl's canon Warrior of Light will always be my tan duskwight male elezen. 🥰
I'll have you know, to me the WoL has always been a woman, and honestly its been kinda interesting journey as a gay woman.
You of course have the twins, with the uppity Alphinaud that the game constantly puts ahead the actually interesting scions tho i guess he's a sort of little brother in some senses. then alisaie where I'm never quite sure if she's supposed to be more of a teen crush or little sister wanting to one up her hero/big sister, but i for one admire her resolve, and she's doing pretty well too, def one of the best scions.
then theres the dommy mommy Y'shtola, definitely one of the best, and the helplessly great guy pal G'raha, who we stan.
Yeah, the WoL was always a woman as in your character right? Because if so to me I also never saw Meteor as the WoL, but my Miqo'te and later my Hyur self insert as the WoL, because I saw them in my cutscenes.
@@BrotherHood-xh9sg oh yes my characters, mainly my aura but i could totally see wol being a woman of any race. i guess its more of like a power thing for me too, like im happy to see and think such strong woman characters are there
@@HoneyDoll894 ohhh that's what you meant. Yeah ff14 has a lot of great characters, both males & females, but also from different species. So it does feel like a rich fantasy world.
I thought you meant that the WoL was female to you because you played a female character. Hence why the WoL wasn't poster boy for me, but my Miqo'te & later my Hyut insert. I seemed to have misunderstood what you meant with it.
@@BrotherHood-xh9sg nono i did mean both, for me the WoL was a woman because i played it like that, but even beyond that it sort of felt right (like even if it wasn't my character i'd probably still resonate more with a fem WoL)
My feel when no Garnet.
The first time I even hear her be called _Comet_ .
I suppose I should had seen that coming considering I didn't think the promotional characters would end up being _the main og cast_ after all.
*Also how dare you forget Faris!*
My WoL is Elezen whose outfit is meant to put the image in people's heads of the first Wol. WIth her Legend hairstyle, long yellow cape and pointed boots and Sword of Light.
But I love FF1.
How dare you not put Garnet/Dagger in that female character montage?! You and me now have beef.
I am more upset he didn't put Barret in there! He truly is best girl.
Deplander is just our goofy cousin from an alternate universe.
I started off as a Midlander Hyur that almost looks like Comet (which I did not know until now) except with different facial structure, hair length, and eye color. Now I kinda want to change my character to this hairstyle
It's clearly Ardbert he got the merch deal.
Damn, now I want to an ALT using Comet's design, I don't suppose you'd be willing to share the sliders you used to create Comet for this video?

@@TheEorzeanArchives Curious question: is she the default female Hyur model?
Highlander females is the race i ended up picking and sticking to 3 years ago in late SB. Big, but not bulky, looked good in armor and looked cool.
Was too good of a pick to both meet main character standard, and also because muscle sliders :^)
Loved the lore drop!
Huh, my WoL's a female Hyur with that hairstyle, but in red. Who knew I nearly matched this WoL accidentally? 😂
I mean trailers aside and all that, I hope someday all games will have a character creation even if its not that in depth so we can better immerse ourselves in. I can only really feel immersed playing male character to the point where sometimes I don't play specific games for lack of immersion so I can, to some extent, imagine how people that identify with other appearances that aren't a male character feel like.
There’s always a chance they can make this WoL be a heroine from another shard.
What shirt is your elezen wearing?
Pixie Cotton Apron of Crafting
As an FFVIII stan I was so prepared to follow your instructions to be mad when you inevitably skipped including a character from my (horribly forgotten) 2nd favourite game in the series, but I am appeased.
I do love that I can think of so many great female NPCs. And not just the main characters, but also the side characters and even villains, as well. And they're distinct.
White Raven, ever since I heard of her. She has been my favorite villain/character. But at the other hand I haven't made it past ARR, so don't have much to compare her too xD
2:10 Oof, no FF2 Maria.
I main a midland female hyur aswell, always have, always will.
Been a while since I stopped to watch a FF video, this one made me really happy ♥ I half expected not to hear my girl lightning in there, or to have her come with a barb about a certain return X3
Wouldn't Agnes and Edea be consider warriors of light too?
While I agree with the point you're trying to make. I need to vehemently disagree with your categorization of Yuna, Terra. And Rinoa as "not main characters" as even the director of X and the majority of the fanbase say that the story is in fact about Yuna, and is why you can name Tidus "NottheHero" and remove him from your party to let the gal squad reign supreme. Terra is so obviously the main character of 6 that its almost painful. And Rinoa had more story importance than Squall just being along for the ride. I agree that a female protagonist having spotlight in final fantasy would be really neat. But from a business perspective, not a gender perspective, 13 flopped, hard, and that was the first time they gave full center focus rather than building the story around the woman and then making the male character as an excuse forlore dumping. I mean, Fran, Balthier, Ashe, and Basche share main character role in 12, vaan and Penelo were added for western audiences. Just, you know, use examples of female characters not in the spotlight. Cause even Freya and Garnet are more main character than Zidane by getting the most memorable and heart breaking story moments. Your not alone will never hit as heart as Fealty shaken when beatrix changes sides. I think you ignored their contributions to the story a bit too much with that statement. Final fantasy has always been an equal ground of character importance and diversity since game one gave us androgynous, genderless heroes. Otherwise, i liked the thesis.
There are times that you have to fight with Yuna and Lulu or Riku , in your party for for FF 10 .She got her own game in X2 along with Riku and third female lead P,ayne, FF 7 Tifa is a female monk role. Yuffie the female ninja each having their own reason for being...There is Lighting Returns, female lead solo play.. loved the character.
@@ruthnovena40 yeah, exactly my point. The beauty of final fantasy is that the story is never as straightforward as it seems. If you think Vaan is 12s main character, you aren't paying attention. I think what Archives is mistaking is player protag IS main character. Which even in the story of FF14, we are not the main character. In ARR, it was The alliance and Alphinaud. In Heavensward, it was Estinian, Nidhogg and Aymeric. In Stormblood, clearly Lyse was main character. There's a ton of examples, so its almost insulting to imply that final fantasy neglects its amazing female characters, when they have done nothing but shown them amazing love. Comet "being forgotten" is no different than Lammits male form being forgotten. Or Rhenda Raes male counterpart being "forgotten" they aren't forgotten, they are opposite gender references to show off the designs
And the fact that Yoshi recently with SHB bringing back the elezen, it only standa to reason that he's not finished with concepts yet. And Ardbert is the face of the game by Yoshis design. To pay respect to the man too overwhelmed with projects and rushed by square to make OG 14 good. And so he's kept Ardbert and even made him story important to show he has love for the vision the old director couldn't achieve. I also have an issue with your "video games refuse to get with the times" statement, I mean, games are so inclusive now that genders are listed as Type A and Type B, and Malenia is the strongest boss in current gaming. Women have been the leads in ff for years, and as of 16s trailer. Will continue to do so.
You missed Celes from ff6
Quistis is best girl. She's a hot teacher type with a whip and is a Blue Mage!!!!!
I'll assume her appearance must've been connected to 1.0
I've proudly been female Elezen since launch......Shaquanetta Dupree
Damn I never knew about her! Long live Comet !
Peter Griffin: "Was she hot?"
I'm a straight male that plays a female character because if I'm going to be staring at a character 90+ percent of my play time, I want one that I like to look at.
You know, one of the reasons Tomb Raider was so popular.
As I heard one of the reasons before, others being clothing options
They're the same person. Comet is Meteor after her transition.
tsk rsk tsk we all know that the REAL WOL is a dark skinned, shot haired smoking hot female thighlander right!...right? O_O
I really appreciate you making a video like this as it does touch on one of my bigger concerns with the recent Final Fantasy games. The lack of any major female characters in 15 was a big issue for me and resulted in me never actually connecting with the story or the other characters to the point that i can easily call it my least favorite FF (Cindy and Lunafreya don't count. One is a tertiary character plot wise and the other is a plot device at best) and the trailers for 16 are making me start to worry that it's going to have the same problem.
It's why i was really happy when i gave 14 a chance about a year ago and saw how prevalent and varied it's female cast is. I'll be honest, from the outside my impression was that the game would be nothing but catgirl waifus so seeing characters like Merlwyb, Yugiri and even Y'shtola, funnily enough, really gave me the impression that this would be a game that would stick with me for decades to come, just like the FF games of my childhood still do to this day.
16 definitely seems to be a solo male protagonist story and as a trans person this bums me out a lot. Especially after XV had a whole male-only party, and FF7R made us only be Cloud outside of battle (but at least we could play Tifa and Aerith in battle and Yuffie in DLC, although I never did play the DLC since I played on PS4...)
Hope we get a new poster WoL for 7.0, there's far too many races in this game to only have a Hyur representing the entire playerbase.
I don't agree. Yes there are many species in game. And the people who play it are diverse, but I don't think that is the point of the poster boy. It's like if you want to replace pikachu with jigglypuff in pokemon stuff. I don't think that would be productive. Better would be to use the posters as it is. With Poster Boy as the "player" and see the other characters of each expansion. Afterall you can't account or represent every species and stuff from the game & the people who play it. You would literally go through thousands of variations. It's not achievable and at this point counterproductive.
@@BrotherHood-xh9sg I mean they could...change the WoL stand-in with each expansion. Sure they would have to make a new model, but it would be fun!
As is, the fact that the player stand-in in the trailers is the single most boring variation of character they could come up with made me stop watching XIV's trailers because I couldn't not groan every time he shows up on the screen. He actually ruins them for me.
@@val7885 But then you want to waste time & resources on something nonsensical that you personally don't like.
TLDR; You would gain diversity, but not really, cause you can't represent everyone. And you would lose money, time & most importantly, the logic behind and purpose of a standin/poster boy.
Generally poster characters are boring, makes it easier for you to picture you as them and use your imagination to fill the gaps. Poster boys thus need to look bland, they don't need to be interesting. They look as basic as can be while representing your target audiance. Cause it isn't their job to stand out and become fledged out characters. It's their job to make it easy for people to go; "Ah so that is my characters place in this trailer".
Basically as I said; it would be a waste of resourches and dumb to do. Because you will go through thousands of variations to represent everyone. And even the most optimistic player understands you will not have that many expansions. In the end it will confuse players more then add anything. If in one trailer you see a Black female Roegadyn Seawolf who is a astrologian as the poster boy, but the next time it's a male au'ra with white scales and blue hair that is a dark knight. It will confuse people and fail at it's job. It would sooner make players speculate that this is a new character in the expansion, then fullfilling it's actual role. It's role of being the actual standin for the player in the trailers. I am not aiming to offend you, but bluntly said, it's a dumb idea and for a nonsensical purpose. We have an amazing diversity in characters with Y'shtola, Alphinod, the White Raven etc. There is no need to throw logic out the window for that purpose.
@@BrotherHood-xh9sg You always have options. If changing them every expac would br 'confusing', you can have a group of adventurers as player standins, ala 1.0 trailers. Alternativelly, they could cut it down to a pair, which is more limiting, but also easier.
Or, just straight up don't have WoL in trailers.
Edit: Also, when changing character model, there are ways to make it clear they are the player character. Whether by keeping armour/class continuity (like how HW one starts with derplander in ARR'S WAR gear before changing to DRG), or you can have a recogniseable, visible mark that doesn't change between iterations. Artists are perfectly capable of making changes like this seamless. Would it somewhat be more resource intensive? Of course, but they already change derplander's outfit and face with every expansion anyway, so the difference would be less than it would be if they were fully reusing the same model over and over.
@@val7885 That groups of adventures would work, if only they hadn't depicted a certain character as the player insert already. Adding more random party members would just once again bring confusion, and take time away from other moments or characters in a very limited in time trailer.
Once agin, it's not worth it and counterproductive. Do so in another work, there is literally no benefit to it. Removing the Player insert can be an option, but why? Cause you don't like him? That's a pretty dumb reason. The player insert fufills it's job well. Especially in the Endwalker one. Looked epic. Same in his short scenes as a monk or Samurai. There is literally no valid reason to change him to another character. And counteract his purpose.
I dont have problems with charakters being white, male or straight!
Pokemon concept.
Rekupo!
SUBSCRIBED!!! :D ♥
While this is interesting and I did appreciate the mention of Flora, (FF1's White Mage) I wish you would speak for yourself. I do not have a problem with Meteor nor do I wish to see him replaced.
The video isn't really a call to action as it's not being directed at devs or a singular desire to want Comet as the or the only WoL. More bringing light to the point and idly wondering what could or might be. not really sure why it felt like this was speaking for anyone other than for some of our team. -Elioaux
@@TheEorzeanArchives
I never really considered it a call to action, I just don't like being included in general collective statements that I don't necessarily agree with. However since you meant your team instead of fans in general, I apologize for the misunderstanding and thank you for the clarification.

... I kinda have an idea.
What if that "kindred spirit" was also a character we create? Since we get to fashion our own WoL, it would be so cool to make a counterpart, like Ardbert was. Of course, I can definitely see limitations on things like gender, race and job for voice and role reasons, but still... I can definitely imagine it. As for the reasons for that, it's because the female Derplander will be the default this time instead of our own Derplander and Ardbert. Another is also the idea of having another created character take the spotlight, but as an NPC that may or may not be voiced, and be cool alongside you. Last reason is that I just want to use all those presets I made not just on retainers( -which 70% are most definitely not catgirls and catboys- )
(Spoiler for 5.3 on the edit below)
Edit: and also, said character might be a shard's Azem :p
I immediatly thought of R34 when you said she sparked an interst in fans. The internet has ruined me it seems.
I find it rather concerning that a lot of people struggle with the idea of empathizing with a story that they can't identify with on superficial levels.
You shouldn't need to share the same set of dangly bits as I to empathize with me developing PTSD over being hit by a car.
Nor should you need to share the same set of dangly bits with a character in a story to be able to appreciate and immerse yourself in their story.
It just doesn't sound right to me to need superficial nonsense like that for the ability to enjoy a story.
That's an easy opinion to have when every protagonist looks like you. Sure, you might play a Tomb Raider once in a while for a change, but you know that you'll never have a shortage of male characters to play, whatever type of game you want.
@@alisonmonday3350 "That's an easy opinion to have when every protagonist looks like you."
Sure; Because mildly fat, overly hairy men with ethnic backgrounds that make a hurricane disaster site look like a masterclass in organization are dime a dozen.
Oh wait, no. The only thing from that list that even features in games with any regularity is that there are men. Anything else on that list and you'd be lucky to find more than a single example.
"you'll never have a shortage of male characters to play, whatever type of game you want."
I don't recall EVER picking up a game for the reason that it featured a man. Again, the very notion is incomprihensible to me.
I pick my games by the following criteria:
-Is of a genre that I'm interested in.
-The negative reviews mention only things that I'm perfectly fine putting up with.
-Having seen gameplay or story segments, I got interested.
-Is from a series that I'm already invested in.
-The art style isn't off-putting.
And that's it.
And just for reference I went through my games; With an extreme stretch, a little over a third of my games feature even arguably male protagonists.
In either case, there is either a serious thing that needs to be uncovered behind people struggling with sympathizing with people that are different from them or the people in question are simply not even trying.
@@alisonmonday3350 That's a pretty dumb take. You relate to a character because of their character. Not physical features.
I don't have kids, but I relate to Joe from the last of us.
I am not an immune 13ish girl in a apocalyse with the fate of the world from a vacine on her shoulders. Yet related to Ellie.
I am not a female gravity manipulator, but I relate to Kat from Gravity Rush.
I haven't been unfortunate enough to lose my friend and raise his daughter, also I am not black, but I relate to Barrett.
etc.
Same for movies or books.
Not a women in a medivial fantasy world, but I relate to Cassandra & Alice from the rangers apprentice.
Not a horse, but I relate to Boxer from animal farm.
Not a black man & former slave in an era the era of slavery, but I relate to Django from django unchained.
The fact that these characters happened to have different skin colors, dangly bits etc. Didn't matter, because who really gives a shit about that? If you play a game, just because the main character looks like you, that is a weird reason to play the game. For me the story, gameplay & visuals are important. But the character needing to look like you as a criteria to judge/rate a game, no matter how small, just seems stupid to me.
@@BrotherHood-xh9sg You talk at length about how YOU play the game. Should everyone play the way you do? Is your way of playing the only way? Because that's what you seem to be saying here. Things that don't matter to you may be important to others. Things that are complete dealbreakers to you may not even be a consideration to others. Yours is not the only valid view.
@@alisonmonday3350 Of course I am not saying that the way I play games or what I like in games is superior.
What I am saying is the incapabillity of relating to characters or people that aren't you or look like you, is correlated to mental health issues, narcissism and in really bad cases. To psychopathic and/or sociopathic tenadacies.
So you know, you are making alarm bells go off like a nuclair siren.
The warrior of light was a lalafell
This, the final scene with Zenos was 10x better this way.
@@rickydargence5948 The cutscenes of this game as a Lalafell would be hysterical and the only reason I am still debating if I should change my character to a lalafell xD
My warrior of light is female and honestly it's easier to understand her facial expressions whether it be good or bad or even simply "I'm tired of all of this" Male Wol character expressions seem more static than the females. With the female(as male myself) it's a lot easier to understand how a female feels with her facial expressions
Could we stop pretending that someone has to be exactly like you to represent you? That kind of mentality is revoltingly divisive to people and reductive to their physical traits.
Can we stop pretending representation doesn't matter? This idea came from talking to people who felt that disconnect, you may not but it is real to others. -Elioaux
How do you even know that Meteor is '' straight ''?
That's a very bizarre and unnecessary assumption to make for no real reason.
You don't even know the sexuality of a character unless stated otherwise...
at what point do they say he is
Modern media landscape literally works like this. A character is straight until otherwise shown, and even then, we have discussions about whether the characters are just reeeeeallly close friends.
the only real female protag in FF is lightning from 13. and her character is garbage. we need a well written female protag up in here. And no Terra doesnt count from 6 and nor does the MMO player characters. im talking about a REAL female protag. like how cloud is the protag to 7 or zidane is the protag for 9.
That went from fun fact to propaganda really quickly.
Its was more of a personal opinion, its fine to not like it but it's not like we were obfuscating what and why we felt the way we did.
I just came here to learn more about the production of this amazing game, some hide lore...and guess what i found?just biased views...The whole "white-straight-male BAD" it's just so predicteble...everyone talks about "diversity" but no one gives a valid argument to how make EVERY SINGLE ONE in this world represented in ONE character in ONE midia(something from ASIA btw...egocentric westerns strikes again...)It's just not productive or a good thing anymore...it's just about ego. What a waste of potential good video...
Not to make this overly political, but shouldn't reallity catch up first? Like we have seen an small growth in female gamers (in non-puzzle or mobile games), but they still don't even get close to the male demographic in shooters, moba's, rpg's etc.
Also, Meteor is white??? I don't know why, but I always thought he was asian. Since the game is made in Japan & it was a Yoshi look alike (right)? Am I the only one who thought of asian if you had to relate him to our earth ethnicities?
Meteor color have to do with anything she is mostly grey and what does Asian have to do with anything? Japan is a country. Asian is a broad term. There are a lot of females playing thia mmo. There is also a wide age range so what is the point.?
@@ruthnovena40 I will apologize up front if I misunderstood you. Your sentences make no sense and I think I said something, and you either interperted it wrong and are possibly having another conversation. Or didn't watch the video and so don't understand my response. So I will give my best to try and answer you.
My response with Meteor being asian is because in the video Ellio calls him another stereotype white male representation. My response to this was, that because of the previously named reasons I would call him asian if I had to compare him to an ethnicity from our world.
Yeah, that's why I used asian. It's a category, good job, you understood that. It's almost like these categories have different sub categories in them. These sub categories are different, but alike enough to a point that they are put together in the same group. For example how Ellio categorized white people, while they also have subcategories, like eastern european white, nordic white, arabian white etc. and you can further categorize those based on multiple factors like region, culture, heritage etc. I think you got offended by an issue you made up.
As for the ammount of women & age diversity. Uhmm, okay? I don't follow again where you see a problem in what I said? What I said still stands true and are the objective truth of data. The vast majority of people playing MMO's, RPG's, Shooters etc. are still male. And while FF14 probably has more women playing it compared to wow or something. But we have no census on the sex of the players, last one was 5 years ago with a 7M:3F split. Still that makes the overwhelming majority male, and considering a boom in players recently, the general data on who plays MMO's, that divide more then likely got bigger. So I don't understand what part of my comment of pulling the cart before the horse, threw you in a hissy fit?
He looks pretty white to me
