How To: Service your Duramax Diesel The Right Way

- Today is maintenance day so I figured I would show you all some basic maintenance on a 2002 GMC Sierra with an LB7 Duramax Diesel engine. Doing services like this is pretty regular stuff but if you are new to diesel ownership then maybe this will help you out when you go to tackle your own maintenance. Don’t be intimidated by what you hear or read, doing this stuff isn’t that bad and you will save a good amount of coin doing it yourself.
I do my oil changes every 5,000 miles using conventional 15/40 oil. I also do the fuel filter and transmission spin on filter every year OR 15,000 miles. There is an internal filter in the pan of the Allison transmission but it is not done as frequently, I service that one about every 45,000 miles. Just so we are clear, no book or manual told me these numbers, it is just the frequency that I like to do them. I hope this helps some of you out, all the filters, parts, and tool I used are listed below. Please leave a comment below and let me know what you think or if you would like to see other maintenance items or repairs done.

As a new owner of 2004 duramax, I appreciate your knowledge. It's definitely expensive. I've done maintenance on gas vehicles. Diesel is a other world for me. You're a great teacher!
Right on thank you so much! I will be putting out more duramax content in the near future so if you would like to see anything just let me know. Enjoy your truck!
@@HighPriority I will definitely be on look out for upcoming videos!
Awesome video! Just got a 2023 2500hd durmax.
Great video man thank you so much I'm a new 2005 GMC owner and this is great to know
Glad I could help! Enjoy your new truck. If you have any questions feel free to reach out.
Great video man! Should be top video for #Duramaxmaintenance!
Thank you Mike! I appreciate that. More duramax content coming down the pipe!
Having an oil analysis done is an extra step that I do annually on all my diesels… 1984 GMC K2500 6.2L (bought new)… 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 3.0 Mercedes diesel (bought used)… and a 2009 Sierra 1-ton Duramax (bought new).
Great tip! Especially when the injectors are under the valve covers and these early model trucks are known for leaking fuel into the crankcase.
You can also remove the Battery on the RH side to get acess to fuel filter
Yes you could do this for a bit more room just be careful with the battery hot lead if you don’t disconnect the other battery as well. 👍
Great video! Keeping it simple and concise. Have you done the pump rub fix for the transfer case?
Not yet. I have the new case half so it’s coming soon!
how much transmission fluid do you top off for new filter? im new to this too
You could pre fill it it would wanted but it’s pretty negligible, less than half a qt I’d say. I’ve heard of a guy who changed his spin on multiple times and eventually had an issue with low fluid. After you changed it, on your next drive check the fluid to be sure it’s not too low.
Is it ok to mix oil and tranny fluid for recycling?
When I worked in fleet maintenance we had one drum for everything and the oil recycle guys never said a thing. Doing some quick reading it says insoluble machine oils like crank case, hydraulic, and transmission fluids are ok to mix and recycle but don’t mix brake fluid or antifreeze with them.
Yes, it is. It's all oil in the sense of recycling. No coolant, gas, brake fluid, etc. And no oil contaminated with any of those listed above.
You lost me at harbor freight...
😆. Well HF may be cheap sh#t but also very obtainable for most. I could say get tools off the Snap On truck but that would have lost everyone else haha.
@@HighPriorityi only use HF tools and im hard as fuck on gear, have yet to break anything, and i wale on 3/8 ratchets with 3lb hammers daily
@@clarkwilliams9967 man same! I was a shop mechanic for almost ten years. My set of HF metric sockets are still working just fine today! Except the 10 that finally cracked, I did have to upgrade that with a Snap On. There are certain things I will get from HF and some things I definitely will not haha.
