Overactive Bladder Diet - Key Foods to AVOID with Urgency

- Overactive bladder, urgency and bladder leakage are often aggravated by common food and drink. Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist Michelle from www.pelvicexercises.com.au shows you the key dietary causes of bladder irritation and urinary urgency. This dietary information for men and women helps you better manage overactive bladder and reduce bladder leakage.
Overactive bladder is characterized by bladder symptoms including urinary urgency, frequency (daily voiding more than 10 times), nocturia (night time voiding more than 1-2 times) and urinary incontinence. Some foods and drinks can cause bladder irritation and increase overactive bladder problems.
The main bladder irritants to avoid are presented in the following 5 categories. The most common bladder irritants that cause bladder urgency include:
*Caffeine
*Alcohol
*Acidic Foods
*Condiments and Spices
*Medications and Artificial Sweeteners (some)
Many bladder irritants are hidden in the ingredients of common foods and drinks. If you suffer from overactive bladder, it's important to be aware of those ingredients that potentially irritate your bladder and read the food labels of foods and drinks before you consume these items.
These are the dietary substances most likely to cause bladder urgency in some individuals. Not all of these foods and drinks will have the same effect on every individual with overactive bladder. To test whether or not they worsen your overactive bladder symptoms, you may choose to eliminate them for a week and then reintroduce individual items one at a time every couple of days. Note the immediate effect on your bladder urgency and leakage and you may decide to limit or eliminate them from your diet if they have a marked effect.
When eating out some of the foods most likely to cause bladder urgency include some of our favorite international cuisines. This video discusses some of the cuisines more likely to cause bladder irritation when eating out.
If you require medical assistance managing overactive bladder then consult with a Pelvic Floor Physiotherapist.

Simple and straight forward and depressing all in one!
NO SH*T everything your not supposed to have. and not 1 WORD of what you need to consume. 1st and LAST TIME HERE.
I want to cry
don't be so sad, you can now live off rice and water. i now have a very active bladder, had a mild hear attack a month ago and it has made it worse
WooHoo - I can still have ice cubes!
Yay!
yes, but not many
Too funny!!
😂no
Basically dont eat or drink all the GOOD STUFF...
Don't eat or drink at all, if you followed everything that is now considered " could be harmful" that's all that's left to do. Tomorrow it'll be water.
No doubt, all the things I like aren't allowed.
Basically starve yourself and you can live forever..What is left than…😮
Exactly
Michelle, your tips were very helpful! I have followed a plant based diet for many years and though I don't drink alcohol or carbonated beverages, over the past several months I'd gotten into the habit of eating a lot of citrus - perhaps two grapefruits and two oranges a day along with other fruit. I'd also developed a fancy for hot sauces containing chillis, habanero, and jalapenos, and used them - as well as pepper flakes - on a lot of my meals, since many include beans. Additionally, I'd returned to drinking coffee, mostly decaf, which I believed was "better." Well, I began experiencing marked bladder symptoms that made me really uncomfortable - to say the least - not to mention very concerned. Five days ago, I stopped using all of the above and the symptoms have improved dramatically. I encourage other viewers who are having overactive bladder symptoms to give your suggestions a serious try. There's nothing to lose and a lot of comfort and peace of mind to gain. Thanks again and keep up the fine work!
Great news Bill, if this video helps just one person as it's helped you then it's all worthwhile indeed - thank you for commenting and all the best
@Goo Gle I hate when people don't reply it pisses me off souch

Thank you so much really you opened my eyes, even though it hurts😊
Thank you for this helpful info Michelle!
Thanks for the information. Helped me a lot. My doctors did not tell me regarding this. He only told me not to eat spicy foods.
Thank you very much for that, you are spot on! I don't drink coffee or alcohol but all the other things you've mentioned do irritate my bladder. It's really frustrating at times as I spend ages reading labels when food shopping 🙄and my food choices are very limited. I seldom eat out. I thought I was the odd one out...
Ever helpful - many thanks Michelle.
This is really helpful. Pity doctors wouldn't point is in your direction!
Wow! I didn’t know I ate so many foods that irritated my bladder.
I switched to 85% chocolate so that I wouldn’t have as much sugar. So now I learned that is higher in caffeine. I just can’t win!
That was amazing. Thank you, Michelle. #ILoveMichelleKenway
100% agree with everything except for white wine. White wine is normally much more acidic than rose or even red. And I find it causes me a bladder infection and I avoid it now completely!
Thank you . I have learnt a lot
Thank you. Very extensive group of spices.
Very informative thanks
Another amazing video thank you. Like seeing your crew in the reflection too. Great information.
@Bill Dube my pleasure - thanks so much 🙏 for your support! So glad you like this video. All the best to you! 🙏 💖

You just teased me with the chocolate by eating it in my face 😂😂😂😂😩😩😩 I’m so jealous lol
Hi Michelle , thanks so much for this video😭😭😭, I know you are more than just the messenger for this important subject..Coffee dark chocolate and fruit were basically my go to place😩, but reality is what we have to accept or maybe end up with a worse problem..Thanks for your time and knowledgable information, I appreciate what you do and respect the choices you put in front of us😘..

Excellent! Thank you for this valuable information. Some urologists don't explain this diet topic and just prescribe.
So glad to help!
@@michellephysio Blessings for you! Best regards from Puerto Rico 😉
The Urologist that may just prescribe meds from the get go I would just get up & walk out.
My mom had 2 or 3 surgeries for this and it didnt help. I think her changing her eating habits would of helped her than the surgeries. I think the doctor just wanted money. All they said was dont drink coffee 😒.
Dont expect from such doctors. Urologist never speak with patients much. Give them just money. Walk out of their clinic within two minutes & after waiting outside for two hours. Same with diabetic foot doctors. Keep wallet ready to pay them
VERY USEFUL
Thank you for sharing this.

This video was helpful. I have sensitive bladder and I have cut out all soft drinks, spices, most acidic fruits. I do consume dark chocolate in small amounts and kiwi fruit as well.
Thank-you. That covers a lot of my favourites ! K
I've found your videos very helpful. I did not realize carbonation was a problem. I drink a lot of lemon/lime seltzer, and non-alcoholic beer. I've cut out alcohol almost completely, and down to one decaf coffee in the morning. But I've been waking up every two hours to go to the bathroom for years, I can't even remember what it was like to sleep through the night. I drink a lot of herbal tea such as turmeric/ginger, lemon/ginger, and then blends like nettle/dandelion/licorice. Giving up the dark chocolate is tough. Plus my garden is FUUUULLLLLLL of tomatoes! Oy! I just went through 3 weeks antibiotic from a UTI - am using DMannose with cranberry, an Icelandic herb called angelica in a capsule called Sagapro, and also a probiotic particularly for the urinary tract. It is wonderful that someone like you is sharing this information in such a straight forward, honest, practical and kind way.
Lemons for me
Turmeric is a oxalate and is inflammatory for the bladder. A no no for interstitial cystitis .
Very helpful thank you Michelle

Hi Michelle . Great videos thank you for these and for giving me some more knowledge on the subject. Is decaf tea better than decaf coffee ?

Thank You! I suffer from bladder cancer.. I can confirm all these foods/ chemical's will irritate those tumors inside my bladder then I begin to bleed! Now I'm convinced that's been the problem all along! Also taking. Norwegian fish oil or eating Mackerel also helps allot!
I pray you are cured. Blessings 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I can’t seem to find your CZcams video of bladder friendly foods. Could you post the link here? Thank you for your video it’s been helpful
Good information thank you
@Gracy L • you're welcome! Thank you for taking the time to comment. Hope this helps🙏
Great video Michelle, very informative. I suffer from bladder problems. What can I eat instead of tomatoes and citrus fruits ?
Great question Tudor - the issue is obviously the acidic content - low acid tomatoes are often well tolerated, the orange ones are delicious too. As far as citrus goes I wish I knew, maybe another viewer may have a suggestion on this ...
Great information and I love your accent. Thank you. Life is all about experimenting and considering what works. Keeping a food diary has helped me. I wonder if combining other ingredients with some of these foods lessens the irritation. There are certainly foods that help reduce OAB.
Thank you. I’m gonna try
@Sam Farin you're welcome! I do hope this helps 🙏
thank you.
Thank you 🙏
You’re welcome 😊
Thanks for this. At one point I was told that oxalate aggravated it and being vegetarian and a picky eater that was my entire diet. Wish I'd had this at the start of my issues. Wine and chocolate were hard to take!😀
That sounds really tough Beatrice, there's quite a bit of cross over too with high oxalates and bladder irritants - are you still on low oxalates? Can you tolerate carob?
You are so funny when you say "Oooh that piece of chocolate needs some tidying up"!!! That is EXACTLY what my mum used to say when I was growing up in Australia!!!!!
This video was so informative as I have MS and an overactive bladder which has got worse over time. You have confirmed for me what intuitively I thought were irritants as well as a few more surprises such as green tea. Such a lot to change.....Thank you
Glad this helps you Cara - yes green tea is one of those hidden irritants, there are low caffeine varieties of green tea available (but none caffeine free that I know of ...yet)
How old are you ?
@@r.barbhuiya1726 That’s rude question??
Thanks
Pretty much don’t eat anything 😩
I agree with this information . There are medications to help you go to the washroom so often . You may have an injury that contributes to an over active bladder . A small bladder . A urologist will help . 😊
Thanks for sharing 👍
@Generoso Abiul You're welcome! I'm glad I could share something of value with you. All the best!🙏
Makes sense why am urinating like crazy
I improved after 2 days
Drank a lot of detox tea and dtyck to paleo diet
This is all getting way too confusing. Have a glass of lemon and hot water every morning, it's so good for you. No, don't have lemon, it's too acidic. Pure dark chocolate, have a small bit every day, very good. No, the darker the chocolate the worse it is. Onions, garlic etc, good. No, onions bad. And on it goes.
It really depends on your personal needs, that's the thing. Like...apples are healthy, right? But I can't digest polyols, so apples are bad for me.
Informative!
@NDLabs Inc many thanks for your feedback and support!💖
@@michellephysio You're welcome!
Do you have any tips for slowly reintroducing foods?
thats literally my entire diet!
Love your work but I think you just named all my fave food groups. Even choc paddle pops. Luckily you haven't mentioned cheese...yet!!
Agreed Sue, it's a problem isn't it! I have some good food swaps coming out next week, stay tuned :)
Have a rule of thumb , 1 coffee 4 glasses of water , it will be washout . (my opinion ).. Salud !😏
@@michellephysio Hi I'm suffering from this at present and i had a hospital scan about 3 weeks ago and when I went to the toilet they said my bladder fully emptied. I said so why do I find the need to go like twice an hour or every 2 hours I cant hold it longer than that without feeling uncomfortable. They did say the saw fibroids which may be a problem. I still have another appointment but that's not for months because of Covid. I was just wondering about the Caffeine I cut it out two weeks ago and all fizzy drinks but i havent noticed any difference apart from when i do go more comes out than normal but i still find i cant hold it longer than 2 hours 3 at a push. Is Caffeine really an issue if i cant see a difference?? Thank you:)
Arggg, the food list is the stuff that I normally eat. And....the spices are the ones I use weekly. Now I have to change a lot of options and substitute things.
Every morning I took 2 pieces of Dark chocholate before my brisk walk. Will it irritate the bladder?
I love her accent!!!!😍
Thank you. Very informative, covering some uncertainities. 👍🏾

When you get a bladder infection, urine trouble !!
Thank you very much
@Maher Elhelw You are welcome!❤️
Could you address the amount of these items that may be unhealthy. For example, a cup of tea a day versus five. A cut up tomato with eggs as opposed to a tomato salad? Or tomatoes sauce with pasta? ocasional use of say a jalapeño Chile versus hot Chile sauce? And what IS occasional? Thanks so much!
Sheesh if I eliminate all those I will be too weak to make it to the toilet in time 🤣 seriously, very helpful tips thanks.
Omg I just started eating dark chocolate the 100% all of a sudden I started having over active bladder and I didn't know why until now. Thank you so much for this information I guess I'm getting rid of my dark chocolate 🍫🙂.
You got this!
I thought that dark chocolate was beneficial for Prostate problems? Now I’m not to eat it? Tomatoes are acidic, bad for the arthritis and the bladder, but good for the Prostate. Very confusing, I think I’ll just live on porridge oats without any dairy produce.
Not happy I need to give up dark chocolate! It’s my only sweet treat!
@@nickybritain4900 just buy tablet form, lycopene supplements.
I imagine I can still drink water. May I have bread with my water? This has come on me quickly and I think something else may be wrong. I will see a doctor as soon as I can. I do not want to ignore something else that my be wrong.
But not everybody gets affected the same way. For those of us who do get affected so easily what is the cause?
I was waiting to hear you mention some ingredients in processed foods. I know one thing that I must stay away from is carageenan and I like half and half in my coffee (which I know I must not over drink) but carageenan is in some brands of half and half but not in others and I make sure I find the ones without. I know it is in other products as well.
thanks
@OnePlus 8 You're welcome! 💖
What about Non Caffeine herbal teas? How about a presentation about WHAT WE CAN EAT/ DRINK? Thanx Doc!!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, I like to eat grapefruits, and I'm assuming this is an acidic fruit as well. I don't always suffer from overactive bladder, but I find myself unconsciously constraining my pelvic area a lot, sort of like holding the urge to urinate, even though when I don't have the urge to. However, this makes me want to have the feeling of needing to go to the bathroom a lot. Several times I catch myself constraining my bladder or my perineum area and I don't understand why. My doctor gave me oxybutynin pills for overactive bladder but they make me very dizzy and I still find myself doing the same thing. I received a cystoscopy thinking it was my prostate, but the doctor says my prostate is small to medium size. Do you think the exercises you recommend would help with this? I have always worked in an office sitting down a lot, maybe this is causing this issue I'm dealing with. I am hopeful and have faith in your knowledge. Thank you again Ms. Kenway
Great 👍
@G t Thank you! Hope this helps! ❤️
I thought tomatoes where recommended for an enlarged prostate
Yes,ur probably right..I found waking up in morning and then breathing not good for my bladder.
Thank you for this! Except alcohol, I am guilty of all of these especially coffee and multivitamin drinks like energy drinks! Obviously, I have to cut down on these.
So tell me.. how can i survive?
I quit drinking alcohol 5 years ago and haven't looked back since. My main issue is whenever I get a craving for sweet tea which has 85 grams of caffiene. I also smoke tobacco, which probably isn't a help either, but it's very hard to quit. I do have chronic gastritis and IBS type C, so a lot of high acidic foods I avoid without any second thoughts. I live off of Greek yogurt and healthy stuff like that, but I think, unfortunately, the sweet tea is going to have to be quit forever.
Did dropping the alcohol help your bladder a lot ?
damn. can't eat anything
Yeah I know it sucks
I didn't undertand the onion part. Raw is bad but if you cook it or fry it then it's ok??
I think my problem has been cause by lots of oregano tea and capsules, taken to ward of corona virus infection. Thank you for your help.
I started laughing almost as soon as you started talking. Coffee (God's gift to woman) Prosecco, chocolate, tomatoes, citrus fruits, mustard, spicy curries, need I go on? Thank you for the extensive list of almost everything I eat and love and was so happy you didn't hit any green vegetables or I'd never get out of the bathroom!
Cheers, Freyja
I hope you know I really appreciated all you told us as I am one of many with an irritable bladder. I was laughing at myself because aside from the sugar substitutes and fuzzy drinks you laid out more than 60% of what I eat. Small wonder what I am doing as my own worst enemy.
You're not alone Freyja!
Man, I also saw another video that shows how onion peel tea is good for your prostate and frequent urination
I observed greentea can easily get pee..i drink greemtea instead of all colored drinks.
Thanks for the info
Hey Michelle,
I understand food, bowel and stress are triggers for the bladder. Does sex irritate an overactive bladder too? Does it cause a flare with pain and urgency?
Yes It does..and the bacteria go bladder to uthera
Is it ok to have a warm lemon drink first thing in the morning
I eat whole food plant based vegan and recently started drinking coffee and have nocturia. I need to give it up. Am wondering what to have as a morning pleasure drink. I do not eat or drink junk food. Are cocoa nibs permitted?
Darn just heard you say no to cacao nibs. Kombucha?
Hello. My main question is should we avoid tea with milk for this oab?
Only meat and water for me, Thank you!👍🙂
Whhaaa ! I think the list is endless 😨
Make us a list of foods that are okay?
Not drinking soda is a piece of cake for me. But i drink coffee someeetimes, but taking those types of tea away from me is a problem. But i think I'm okay because I'm not like addicted to it. I'm working on the chocolate part though
I have my problem is frequent urination pls tell me the solution in medicine is critical situvation for me pls help him
Hello! Thank you for the information!
One question about carbonated drinks: is kombucha okay?
Kombucha is good..I always have a small glass in. The morning with breakfast
Thank you!
So do you think high acidic drinks or foods affect the psa test? This could be a life saver!
I’ve had PSA test for years and doctors never talk about what not to do before the test. Sometimes they will say don’t ride a bike before the test.
I think the lack of information before the test creates lots of false information from the psa test.
@joe perry great question! I had to look this one up and I can't see anything in the clinical research that suggests that diet can influence the psa test however I can see that some factors that can increase the psa test levels are increasing age, enlarged prostate, prostatitis and factors that can lower psa test results include obesity and certain medications. it is possible to have elevated psa and no cancer or a normal psa with cancer, I wish I could be of more help on this one Joe. It could be worth asking your doctor if there are any other factors in your situation, wishing you all the best MK
@@michellephysio Look on the Mayo Clinic site! They seemed a bit unhappy with the psa test.
There is also another site unhappy with the procedure. I will have to look it up.
What to eat then, doc??
