Light's story is so tragic.. He could've become a brilliant detective or pretty much anything he wanted but he had to stumble upon this cursed notebook that pushed his ideals way too far and just corrupted him to a point of no return. His evil laugh in the last episode was when i truly realized how fucked up this dude had become and it was more sad than epic tbh
everyone laughs with satisfaction when they realize that they just have won! i don't think it was too much honestly
I agree. In fact, I think that that was the whole point of the show. After all, in the beginning, we see Ryuk say that he's never seen anything good happen to those that picked up the Death Note and that was proven true as Light literally began to unravel to the point where he not only killed innocent people--like police officers and their associated family--but to the point where he actually put his own immediate family in harm's way. Light may have started out as someone who was willing to try to do something "good" to make the world a better place, but as the series continues, you watch the fear and the anger and the vengeance that Light holds onto slowly rot his moral character until he's just a husk who barely believes in his own will anymore because he's too busy trying to avoid other people. (I mean, seriously, the first 10 episodes are all about Light obsessing about creating a god and the moral dilemmas of criminal behavior, but by the last 10 episodes, all he seems to care about is not getting caught. He's too busy trying to evade everyone and he leaves all the killing up to other people.)
But that's just part of the brilliance of the show. The show, in a way, exists as a way to connect with those that have been hurt by the world and have strong but skewed senses of justice/vigilantism and show them that simply removing "bad" people out of the world won't make the world a better place. Instead, it shows people that once you get stuck in that mindset you slowly start to see the world as black and white and you let your fear and your rage govern you instead of your logic and your empathy...
Sad is but an understatement. Death Note is a tragedy.

Imagine when he died, and Light was announced as Kira over national tv, and thousands, millions of people came to his funeral, lining the streets, throwing notebook paper of out windows like confetti (a homage to the Death Note) and those who couldn’t be there (too far away or in other countries) they would be having celebrations in their own ways, celebrating the life of Light Yagami, Kira.
When you realize that Bonnie and Clyde had a combined total of 50,000 ppl attend their funerals, it made me go “oh shit.” I imagine Kira, who impacted the world, would be on a much bigger scale.
I think seeing this celebration would be more interesting than watching depressed Misa commiting suicide .>.

From what I’ve read on the wiki, the manga actually covered this idea. A crowd of people hold a vigil for Kira, who suddenly stopped killing a year ago, and one of his supporters prays for Kira to return.
