The film cost over $22mil and only made $38+mil. Saved by cable and video.
Dot Matrix was the late Joan Rivers.
One condition Mel had to meet, per George Lucas, to get the rights to parody SW so closely was to not sell merchandise. That inspired Mel to fill the screen with unsellable merchandise.

Great reaction! You got most of the best parts in this edit. You did seem to not pick up on the Wizard of Oz callbacks when the gang first met Yogurt. The four of them, walking forward but fearful, the flames, the booming intimidating voice, etc. So glad you did pick up on Planet of the Apes, Star Trek, and Lawrence of Arabia. Oh, the Dink Dinks were doing the Col. Bogey March from Bridge on the River Kwai.
Yes, this was a big hit when released. Lots of fun to be had.

Great movie. There was a parody on Alien was in the end with the diner scene. They even brought the same actor John Heard Rip for that scene. Other great Mel Brooks spoof movies are : Robin Hood Men in tights and High Anxiety which is a spoof on classic Alfred Hitchcock movies like Psycho or The Birds which you obviously have to see before seeing it. Another great spoof movie you should see is Top Secret .

Hi Jen!🙂Comedian Joan Rivers is the voice of Dot Matrix. The person that physically plays Dot is mime Lorene Shields. Yes, mime, not yours.😄She was one half of the popular entertainment duo of "Shields & Yarnell". Actor Michael Winslow who makes the funny noises became very popular doing that in the "Police Academy" films. He would reprise his act in 2021 on TV's "America's Got Talent". If you want to watch another shrinky 80s film some time like "Honey I Shrunk the Kids", I recommend "Innerspace" (1987). The sexy nurse is a young Brenda Strong from TV's "Desperate Housewives". There is an ACTUAL Star Trek TV actor in this film. It is Tim Russ (Black Hair Comb Trooper). He played Vulcan Tuvok in "Star Trek: Voyager" for 7 years. "Rambo: First Blood Part II" is a great 80s film.🏆"Beneath the Planet of the Apes" is pretty entertaining, but the first and third "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" are my favorites. The film was not a commercial success when it was released. It finished behind the Tom Hanks & Dan Aykroyd comedy "Dragnet" at the box office. However, since it's video release it has become very popular. Great reactions to this classic Mel Brooks comedy, Jen!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Hey Jen. The actor from the Alien Chestburster scene was in fact John Hurt from Alien. That's why he said "not again". Also, the song and dance is a spoof of an old Looney Toons cartoon of Michigan J. Frog. The frog pops out of a box, grabs a cane and top hat, then sings that song, among others.

The guy who did the sound effects is a comedian called Michel Winslow. His most famous role is as Larvell Jones in the Police Academy series of movies, and TV show.
As for movies you missed that this thing parodies, there's the Wizard of Oz (the scene leading up to the reveal of Yogurt) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (see below). The reason there was merchandising in the film was that in order to get permission for the parody at all, they couldn't _do_ any _real_ merchandising in the real world (as that would violate contracts that George Lucas had). Lucas also said they couldn't dress their main star like Han Solo... so they dressed him like Indiana Jones instead. Lucas reportedly laughed a whole bunch on seeing the movie.

there was a Spaceballs cartoon, Brooks as Screwb was the main villain with Dark Helmet only being an impression of goofy Rick Moranis with none of the serious villain vibes he sometimes had in the movie. Vespa and Lone Star were not married yet and still bickering. Each episode was a new pop culture parody.
