  • Elena Dementieva wins the Olympic gold medal over compatriot Dinara Safina in an epic, nervy final. This is probably the favorite moment of many of her fans, and I couldn't find it anywhere on CZcams, so here you go.
Match point of the bronze medal match between Vera Zvonareva and Li Na is included as well as most of the ceremony.

Such a beautiful moment. Every Elena fan knows how much it meant to her. When I saw her smile and kiss the gold medal, It brought me to tears.
Poor Dinara though, you could see it in her face, she was devastated. I feel sorry for her, she never could get hold of her emotions and bring her best game when it mattered the most. And Vera is so cute here, she was clearly happy to get the bronze
Ahh, the nostalgia... We'll never bring back those moments. Say what you like, but today's players couldn't hold a candle to the girls back then. The WTA tour was a real joy to watch.

In the post match interview in her win over Li Na at the USO a couple weeks later, she said "I don't know how I feel anymore because it's strange to know that the happiest day of my life has already passed me by." I wonder if being a mom has changed that sentiment, but I am 100% sure regarding her tennis career she still means it without a doubt. I honestly get tears in my eyes every time I see her reaction to winning too.

@@chriscze6153 I can't imagine the pressure that was lifted off her shoulders after winning the Olympics. All those years of criticism and missed opportunities. This win makes not winning a Slam almost irrelevant to me as her fan. Sure, she deserved to win one more than anybody, God knows she was so close, and it would have cemented her in the history books. But it just wasn't meant to be.
She still left a legacy worth remembering, and had (still has) more fans that love her than many Grand Slam winners.

@@user-kl3sl5pp7g Even in her worst year she had a reasonable chance to at least make a major final (RG 2010) if not win the title. Losing to JJ at the USO I felt she didn't take seriously enough, and then she was unfortunately injured against Schiavone, and then she hadn't had a backhand down the line for years when she could have made the Wimbledon final in 2009. I feel Elena had at least three extremely good chances to make a third major final AT LEAST in her career, but you're right, it wasn't meant to be.
I do know she has more fans that like her than Ostapenko or Stephens but I wish they found my channel....

I m so happy for Elena Dementieva. I wish you had won a slam. She really deserved to win a slam so I guess this gold medal is a comfort especially this is once in every 4 years and not every player can have this honour.

I uploaded this now for several reasons - first, as a very big THANK YOU to everyone who has helped get me to 400 subscribers. I still got tons of matches coming up so please do subscribe if you haven't, I mostly upload Elena matches but I got lots of other stuff coming too. Second, I absolutely love the Olympics, and since it is coming in a few weeks I hope I can upload full highlights of Elena's semifinal and final victories (the videos might get blocked). If they do get blocked, then at least you have this. Finally, I just remembered it's a 4 day weekend in Czech Republic this week and I'm excited as hell. Cheers!

I remember watching this live and thought Elena would take silver in light of their recent head to head. That cry at the end said it all.

I watched the QF and SF on livestream and the final on TV. I was 100% sure Elena would take another silver too, but don't forget that Dinara had horrible scheduling in her matches, including some very late matches deep in the tournament and was forced to play again soon after. Dinara also hit 17 double faults, with 9 or 10 in the final set alone, which I think played a big part in why Elena won. A bit ironic that Elena won her big title because her opponent was the one who couldn't serve, but I'll take it.

@@chriscze6153 Exactly what Jimmy Arias said in his commentary. “Someone hit 17 double faults and it wasn’t Elena” or something to that effect. He was somewhat frustrated that she wouldn’t come to the net to end points and insisted hitting through Safina, which made it harder for herself. But yes, I’ll take it!

All 3 were amazing and none has won a GS. Who would believe that? Elena, Dinara and Vera were much better players than Krejcikova, Barty, Ostapenko...

They had to play against the legends in both Williams sisters, Henin, Clijsters, Capriati etc. The three medals won by Russia during these olympics mirrored the Russian invasion in tennis. It was a pleasure to witness the many different styles on court.

Barty is actually exceptional. Definitely better than Dementieva, seeing as how she has variety, can close points, and actually has a serve. Krejcikova is ok. These girls were definitely better than Kenin and Ostapenko though.
