However, you can still download the video (includes Part 1 to 4) as a splitted zip archive. To unpack just use 7zip, winrar,...
This offers better quality as the version on youtube, because youtube reencodes the video after upload, so there is a quality loss.

The only movie where 2 different generation fighters go head to head and the best part is no cgi involved
Donnie Twump It was a radio controlled model.
Yeah. People who grew up with cgi think there did not exist a world without cgi...
DLordSadow did the US Navy really blow it up with their missile ?
Yeah, it is awesome that they shot it actually, with real planes.
I've always thought they could have used real stock WW2 footage of zeros crashing into the water and blowing up in the sky rather than those fakes they used here.
the pilots in those F14's must have gone insane from hearing "woop woop caution stall! woop woop caution stall! woop woop caution stall!" the whole time! :-D
I'd sooner think they were enjoying every second of it, not many chances a pilot gets flying on the extreme envelope out of combat without a court martial
LOL no kidding,
@F P Looking at the control surfaces as he recovered it. Full right stick and NO roll. The flight surgeon probably had to remove the seat cushion.

I love how the musical score changes when the F-14s are cleared to engage. Playtime is over.
When the pilot in the Tomcat switches to Master Arm and the wings sweep back. Shyt is about to get Real.
"Hello... Goodbye."
Man, those Tomcats are barely staying in the sky they're having to go so slow to be in frame with the zeros. Love this scene.
The scene proved to be near fatal for one of the pilots as he stalled. The scene that shows the low altitude recovery was real.
Tomcat Pesawat yang mampu terbang mencapai mach 2.24 dengan sayap ayun
Yeah. *Now* I know that when Kirk says "Splash the zeroes!", the F14 would in fact *open* its wings, not close them. In order not to just overshoot the Zeroes and be miles away from them before taking a breath, they would have had to be almost at stall speed!
I worked as an extra in this movie. I was stationed at NAS Key West with RVAH-6 where it was filmed and they needed someone to tow an aircraft in the background of the opening scene. (Martin Sheen is talking to the helicopter crewman). I'm towing a RA-5C Vigilante in the background. We had just got off a Med cruise on the Nimitz. I knew some of the Sailors and Marines from the ship. It was cool to see them on the big screen. All you see of me is a blurry guy on tractor towing a Vigilante.
Worth looking for you the way you describe it.
Bob Marioni thank u 4 your service. I saw this at the cinema the week it came out.
Very cool..
Way Cool!

Now i can’t sleep
Man, the wake turbulence alone from the Tomcats would have been enough to knock the Zeros out of the sky.
Spacegoat92 It almost did in real life when they initially buzzed them.
This is not CGI. All that flying was real. The zeros going haywire after the flyby, the Tomcat almost stalling out of the sky trying to maneuver at those speeds with the zero. All real.
read the wiki page, the Tomcat pulled out 80 ft above the water for real, almost bought he farm, and the buzz was like 30 feet from the Texan, he lost his headset and watch, and almost the plane !!, when you see them twisting after , they are not in control.. wake ripped the controls from their hands..looked great though, some brown under ware after that..
Amazing to see what a 14 would do to a WW2 vintage plane..goddam turkey shoot.. and they didn't fuck it in the editing , all looked symetrical and nice and smooth.. it was about the planes not the pilots, wish modern editors would watch this before doing dogfight scenes..no cgi, no cuisinart , 30 second rants by the pilot, sanitary cockpit, enjoyable to watch..

I could watch this movie 100 more times and still not be bored. Excellent film.
The F-14 is one of my all time favorites and I had the privilege of seeing one perform at an airshow in the 90s. Seeing in the air gives you a true appreciation for its size and how loud it was compared to its contemporaries.
i love it when the wings fold in. Like a shark baring its teeth.
Oddly enough they should actually be folding out when going into combat, but that's Hollywood realism for ya
@@Nightdare I understand the US military leans on Hollywood to *avoid* depicting actual military tactics accurately. There are genuine counter-intelligence reasons for that, though some of the things they obscure seem trivial and common-sense.
In any case, the F-14's wings fold in for supersonic flight, needed mostly to rapidly close range with a distant target or to disengage and retreat. They fold out for anything likely to require a high-lift manoeuvre, including landing.
The Zero was not a fast fighter even by contemporary standards (it was easily outpaced by the Mosquito *bomber* introduced around the same time - though to be fair, that's exactly what the Mosquito was designed to do), but was known for an exceptionally tight turning circle and high turn rate (possibly only the Spitfire could match it). The F-14 would definitely want to have its wings out to tangle with it, even if it employed the "boom and zoom" tactics developed specifically to counter the Zero during WW2.
As has been traditional for many years, the Zeroes themselves were actually played by T-6 trainer aircraft, painted appropriately. The resemblance is close enough for movie purposes, and there are no Zeroes left in flying condition - due mostly to the extremely thorough job the Allies did of destroying the IJA and IJN air forces towards the end of the war. In fact, it seems unlikely that a direct Zero replica would be approved to fly these days; they were very flimsy.
@@Nightdare no the wings folding depends on the f14's speed maybe they were trying to go super sonic or atleast speed up because they were going way to slow chasing the zero's
@@botcheek482
Read up on the F-14's variable sweep wings
You have the part about angle depending on speed right, but a Tomcat would never go to fully back swept wings when needing to maneuver (dogfight), or approaching stall (going too slow)
If I go by the timeline as depicted, the F14's were already close enough to engage, which would not require a long distance "sprint" to reach their targets, i.e. they had no need for full delta wing configuration to intercept
When a Tomcat sweeps it's wings back, it looks cool
But when it's time for business, it's not about looking cool

I have to laugh maniacally everytime the Vulcan opens up on the first Zero. That's about 150-200 rounds of 20mm; that would have pulverized that Zero or sawed it in half.
And that AIM-9 Sidewinder probably cost more than that second Zero.
Beautiful F-14 Tomcats...
I was stationed at NAS Miramar, home of Top Gun, when this film came out. I had a part time job at the base theater, and I showed this film to a full house. The audience cheered at the scene.
I was at A School in San Diego the summer of 1980 and the NTC theater was full when they showed it there. The cheers were real when the Zeros got blown out of the sky and groans and cursing was also real when the Captain aborted the wing intercept of the Japanese. Fun times.

Ya in ww2 hits from 50cal they would blow. No self sealing gas tank on zeros..
Also something tells me thqt yacht wouldn't of blown to smithereens after a couple hits.
Reminds me of an airshow I went to as a kid. They had an F14 doing a flyby along side a late-war P51 Mustang. The Mustang was giving it everything he could to keep up with the Tomcat, the throttle was *wide* open! The Tomcat had his gear down, flaps down, and nose pitched right up, just to prevent himself from stalling at the speed the Mustang was flying. Absolutely crazy!
That Mustang must not have been capable of full speed. They could cruise at 360 mph, which is at least 200 mph greater than the stall speed of an F-14.
Let's just pretend here that you remember those events incorrectly instead of blaming your lack of knowledge on warplanes.
I know the F-14 is outclassed in practically every area by the fighters of today, but I'll always have a soft spot for it - gorgeous bit of it.
Checking in 3 years after your comment and after the Top Gun sequel came out....the old F14 still has some kick against the modern fighters..in the movie anyway!..ha!..it was kool tho
4:14 if you dont already know this, that is actually a real world incident that almost happened, the pilot had to stay behind the zero, but stalled the aircraft, and almost went straight into the water. That part was NOT scripted.
Damn that's impressive
I heard the pilot were screaming hard when the Tomcat stalled
*EDIT : It's the pilot's wife*
*In the final edit, the sound of the F-14 was actually punctuated by the scream of the pilot's wife when she saw the daily rushes, interspersed by the sound editor into the high-pitched afterburner whine. This scene has now become part of the urban legend of the film, described as a pilot's "death plunge"*

Balls tougher than an M1 Abrams Turret
That never happened......In one scene where an F-14 "thumps" a Zero by flying under and streaking upward in front of the slower aircraft, the resultant "jet blast" of turbulent air was so intense that the control columns of both of the Zeros in the scene were violently wrenched out of the pilots' hands and caused both aircraft to momentarily tumble out of control. The lead pilot's headset, along with his watch were ripped off and out of the open canopy of his Zero, resulting in a few anxious moments as the F-14 pilots were unable to establish contact................ During the engagement when a Zero fires on an F-14, in order to get on the "six" of the low and slow Zero, the jet fighter did a low pull up that ended just 100 feet (30 m) above the ocean in a screaming recovery.
I can't believe Hollywood hasn't re-made this movie.... yet.
There is no F-14's to use to make that movie.
Iran still uses them today
That is what I heard some time back, but it can't be the same airplane with the modifications made to the numbers they still have in service.

@@williamsherman9514me quedo con los Tomcats por su capacidad de desplazar sus alas hacia atras para mayor velocidad
Just read a review on IMB about the making of this movie. The cool maneuver where the F-14 pilot dives for the deck at 4:18 was actually the pilot recovering from a stall. The person who wrote the post had spoken to an F-14 pilot about the maneuver, and he actually knew the pilot who flew in the movie. The pilot stalled trying to stay behind the Zero and had to dive to the deck to regain airspeed, barely pulling up in time!
You can definitely tell he got way too close to the water and the plane lost lift for a few seconds there. It's good to read confirmation on that
Yeah, very slow speed (below 200 knots) and very high angle of attack while changing throttle was a recipe for stall in those early TF-030 engines on the F-14A. Those zeros were always below 200 knots and F-14 was designed to fight at much higher speeds (over 350 knots).
@@KLRGT500KR true! in reality, they would never slow down so much, this is exactly what a very slow enemy would want you to do. you can't "out slow" a prop in a jet fighter (usually ;) ) they would fox the shit out of them from miles away and be done with it

I saw this film by accident, on late night, a long, long time ago & fell in love with it. I Loved the Tomcat as a kid & this movie just made me love them even more. The part where the F-14 sweeps it's wings back, right before it splashes the Zero, is my fav part.
It took me 20+ yrs. , but I FINALLY, have a DVD of this CLASSIC!
The "Tornado" can sweep his wings too, but it never looks as agile as it does on the F-14.
The Tornado is no dogfighter. It is an interceptor.
And as good as the Tomcat looks in this movie, it's not a dogfighter, at least not originally. The swept wings design simply enabled it to fly superfast super efficiently when they are swept back. And the other configuration is to preserve fuel, cruising around on watch for enemy planes threatening to attack the carrier. That way they can fly slower, preserve fuel and remain on post longer without having to refuel.
And you can't safely take-off or land if you only had the supersonic wing configuration.
Actually, as much as I love this scene and the movie, knowing a bit about swept-wings planes. It makes no sense. When they are playing with the Zeros, the F-14s have their wings swept out because they need the agility and fly rather slow.
Sweeping back the wings is only done to achieve maximum speed, supersonic speed to intercept an enemy threat in time.
And either wing configuration does not effect their ability of firing their missiles because:
1) that would be stupid: can't fire the missiles when your wings are not swept back!
2) I know from fact that the some of the missiles are directly attached to the plane's body so it doesn't matter and any missile on the wings is on a pylon that rotates automatically in response to the wing sweeping (it would be really bad for aerodynamics if they didn't)
@@AudieHolland tomcat didn't carry missiles on the out wing panels, only the F111 did and had problems with the mechanism , aim 9's are slung under the engines, on a pilon, pheonix, and aim 120, in the belly recess .. Tomcat can dog fight, it's not the most agile , but the wing design is excellent (A6 uses the same wing) and with the autosweep it did make an effective , agile dogfighter.. Though it was heavy as it was navalized , big gear, heavy wing box, tailhook etc, so it certainly more effective bvor, but they ate mig 23's for breakfast in the Gulf of Sidda .. the first gen 's with the tf33's had surging problems, but the later versions F110, 120, upped the power, had a better bypass ratio, and far more reliable , also much more dry thrust, plus composites were used much more lightening the air frame in later versions as well..
Don't kid yourself, I'd be wary of tangling with an F14, no matter how good a plane I'm flying, plus they train the living fuck out of Naval Aviators as well, so yer not tangling with some novice..
Strait on with an F16, even altitude, sure, the 16 can turn tighter, but the 14's a lot faster, better rate of climb at high alt, much faster dive, accelerates faster in a strait line, more powerful radar, more electronic countermeasures chaff and flare, if the pilot can put these to good use and not get into a turning war with a 16, even odds..
Mind you, an F14 kitted out is like 60 million, and guzzles fuel in a combat situation like an idiot, a 16 costs like 20 mil , can sustain more g's for longer, tighter radius, better pilot ergonomics, it's lighter and more sensitive to the touch (stick and fore arm pressure rather than moving the stick), fly by wire, smaller target, better lift to drag ratio, bubble canopy, helmet mounted sight..
tough call, comes down to tactics in the real world..
2:26 What a superb sight and sound!! Swing wing aircraft traveling at mach speeds looks so damn cool.
That shot always makes me grin, seeing the Tomcats rush in like that? Man look out!
Good lord! These shots are gorgeous!
They no shit made F-14's dogfight Zero's!
I can't believe I have never heard of this movie before!
M61 (Vulcan) 20mm cannon vs A6M (paper thin) Zero: confetti
I don't speak
I do brrrrrtttttttttttttttttttt
yeah it wouldn't have been just a puff of smoke out the engine, the entire zero would have been a puff of smoke.
Confetti... ON FIRE 🔥 No self sealing fuel tanks, lightweight wooden construction... (edit: I digress, most of the shots of the aircraft *not models* were T-6 Texan trainers)
Though the Zeros did sacrifice armor for weight (which made them fast and maneuverable) I would say that ANY WW2 era fighter from any nation from that time would be confetti when hit by an M61 20mm burst. Not just Zeros but ANY fighter. Since all of the prop planes are so much slower, you can score a massive barrage of hits against them and with 20mm HE rounds? The plane is mince meat.

One of my all-time favorite movies. No CGI, just all film, greatness! I'm no aviator but I have to imagine those were very dangerous shots to film for the Mitsubishi pilots. I don't know if some of those moves were exaggerated but when they first passed them it looked like just the thrust almost knocked them out of the sky. My parents took me to see this movie like ten times when I was a kid. A shame Hollywood doesn't try for more original stories like this one.
Just a minor point of order - there were no Mitsubishi Zeroes in flyable condition during the 70s. I understand that's changed a little bit now. I think one or two have been successful restoration projects since then. The "standard" substitute plane used to portray the Zero in films and TV (Such as in Robert Conrad's Black Sheep show) was the AT6 Texan - which had a similar enough profile it could reasonably pass. If you squint.
Otherwise - total agreement - and yes - as comments elsewhere on this video have stated, those Texans DID get knocked around something fierce when the Tomcats blew through on that first pass! To the point where one guy lost his helmet and both of them got the control sticks yanked HARD out of their hands!
And let's give some kudos to the camera crew - I don't know what THEY were flying in, but that camera work was ON POINT! Steady as a rock and always center frame on the action, no matter how crazy the fighter crews and the "Zero" stunt pilots got with their manuevers!
Between the Texans getting violently rocked through wake turbulence as you saw and a tomcat stalling and almost crashing.... there's a reason why they use alot of CGI....
@@ISAFSoldier FAR safer for stuntmen and actors to use CGI if less realistic.
There were apparently LOUD words spoken when this was shown to a group of admirals prior to release. Said group included one carrier guy who was less than pleased with how close to the water the Tomcat came during recovery. According to the crew, they were okay, but the brass were NOT amused.
I watched this movie SO MANY times in my teens. Great cast & some brilliant & authentic flying scenes. It began my love affair with the F-14 then of course Top Gun came out which cemented the F-14 in my heart for ever...
I love when they fold in the wings, and go in for the kill..just awesome!!!
Trina Williams and then in the next shot the wings are extended again
Which makes no sense because the wings are automatically controlled based on airspeed and don't fully sweep back until past 400 knots which is way too fast against the zero. They can be manually swept back but then you lose a lot of lift and at slow speeds would be a nightmare to try and fly. Either way there was no need to sweep considering most of the bfm was at very low speeds for the tomcat.
I gotta admit, those F-14 looks really cool!
14s are a beautiful plane.

Those huge intakes and aerodynamics tell you the F-14 was designed to accelerate hard up to Mach 2.4 (to intercept as far out). It was not designed to fight very slow, but it still held its own. What a gorgeous and bada** fighter. "Anytime baby!"
4:15 What a scream.
Tomcat's vs Zeros 🤣😂
"Zero Should put up a good fighhh..." 💥
Its so nice to hear a brrrrt, no other movies actually use that sound.
5:07 uh-oh, somebody's about to get their a#% kicked!

The F-14 is a Beauty!
Man I miss working on the F-14.
2:39
IJN pilot: What the hell was that?
Tomcat: Freedom.
One of the very few Hollywood movies that actually uses an accurate sound effect for a minigun. I've heard a few people over the years say that the minigun didn't sound real because it "sounded like a fart" ...
Rotary Cannon* but close enough I suppose. Any multi barreled gun/cannon with a fire rate of over 3000 rpm would make a BBBRRRRRRVVVVTTTTT sound as it fires.
@@ISAFSoldier You should hear that gau-8 cannon on the a10. I used to watch them at Ft. Bragg (back when they used to fly out of pope) and I was in the field, I'd sit on top of my truck watching them do gunnery practice for hours.. hearing that gun in person was something to behold. Later in Afghanistan I used to joke around with some of the terps and construction workers we'd let on base, they used to tell us that they were scared to death of that thing (the A10) they said the talis especially didn't like it.
@@marty5300 what makes you think I haven't ;)
@@marty5300 I like the videos where you see the A10 shooting, then hear, “VEEEEEP, voooorrrrrp, brrrddddtt!” which is the screeching sonic booms of the rounds passing through the air, the deeper roar of the gunfire itself, and then the sounds of impact.
'We see here, the infamous, TomCat. classified as the F-14. Here in the wild, it has spotted two AuSixEms. usually known, as the Zero. The TomCat will proceed to play with its prey, before a call from its mother to be able to... finish. it off. '
After spending ten years at Miramar the very sight of any tomcat will always bring tears of joy and sadness to me no matter what.... missed and always loved...anytime anywhere.
F-14 : *Missile Lock, Fires AIM*
Zero: *The Rocket is Launched*
One of the great things about this movie, the vulcan cannon on the F-14 sounds like a vulcan cannon, not a 50 cal.
and the realisitc 2 sec burst doing the job, not the hollywood 1 min, unlimited ammo , pilot gritting teeth, bullshit.. brap, dead zero.. professional
@@planegaper Only problem is that a two-second burst from a Vulcan would turn a Zero into metallic confetti.
Agreed
@@TheKenPrescott If they had the means to do it, I am sure they would have loved to of shown that Zero getting turned into chaff.
@@Elthenar The pilot had Plot Armor at that point.
5:20 is one pissed off Tomcat
John Doe lol
Something that many people didn’t want to see
@@snipinmonsta Especially if you were a MiG :D
@@snipinmonsta only if you're on the opposing side to it.
YEAH it is!!
"I can't swim!"
"You can't swim if you're dead eith… never mind."
One of the great Time Travel movies ever.
Best military aerial photography...ever!!
The scene where the Tomcat engaged to play with them still gives me the chill. No CGI just some great shots.
Outstanding scene, thanks for uploading!
I'm sorry, but if any plane armed with the M-61 Vulcan fired a short burst at a zero all that would have been left is large and medium bits of "chaff"!
Love that trumpet signature "Riff"!
Loved the deliberate shot of the Tomcat’s ears laying back.
"Feeding time."
5:09 That's what a Tomcat that's pissed off looks like. Look what you've done now 'Zero's'.
U just dont mess with that pretty kitty cause that kitty will mess ur world up
Shooting at a Tomcat only makes it Angry.
Who still watching this movie in 2024. Still exciting! Wow it’s 44 years old .
An annual ritual. I watch this movie every year on Dec 6th or 7th. My favorite movie of all time!
What's cool is I was a refueling specialist in the Air Force when they were making this movie. I refueled the NIMITZ's aircraft when they intransited Offutt AFB. Those Tomcats are a big, beautiful plane!
The shots on this movie are insane!
WELL The Navy DID have a hand in it
Especially compared to the crap they are making today.
This is so good! I watched this movie probably 20 times just for this scene. These Tomcats are so amazingly good looking, for me they are the most beautifull things made by human. This shape, swing back wings, aomething about them... oh man I got goosebumps!
I love the music change, the wings go back, the fangs come out! In this last about six seconds
The aerial cinematography is outstanding.
The F-14 coming up behind the 'Zero'. Gives me chills every time. Reinacted that many a time thanks to Airfix as a kid.
One of the most underrated movies I've ever seen. I love the F14 but the whole concept of the movie was fantastic and well played and directed.
"Alert one this is Eagle One. You're cleared to fire. Splash the Zeros."
:Realizes what he just ordered:
"This has got to be a dream."
That was fun. It makes me appreciate Kirk Douglas and Ron O'Neal even more.
If you miss the first 5 minutes of the movie, like I did when it came on HBO, you won't understand the ending!
FEAR THE BONES BABY!!
ANYTIME BABY!!
Preapare to surrender that booty fear the bones
Loved the bit when the second zero was took out with a missile.
Aaaaahhh, modern technology.
Saw this when I was 12 and decided right then and there I was joining the Navy...and I did lol
