Excellent video. One cannot overstate the importance of Stage 1&2. Some minor remarks, thou:
    1. When on the offensive, never assume you are a suprise to the enemy. At least, unless you are close and coming from his low-6. People have chat, where they tell each other when they have 6. Even worse, many pilots don't fly alone and while you think you suprise an enemy with your attack, you are already being setup for his teammate and dead already.
    2. Keep an eye on the clock. Rule of thumb: If your attack takes more than 15secs, you are at a disproportional high risk.
3, Before starting your attack, check around. Check twice. If cloud-level is between you and the enemy, reconsider. There might be others lurking in the clouds.
    4. Stay away from furballs. And I mean *away*, not *above*. Furballs are fighter-magnets. Whenever there is a furball, world&dog tries to maneuver above it and snatch an easy kill by diving on an occupied opponent. So, when you maneuver above a furball, chances are high, you are not alone.
    5. always know your heading. When you fly away from enemy territory, check your back. Likewise, when heading towards it, check upfront. Both not exclusively. Avoid circling above frontline areas, rather fly wide sweeps. Circling closely above some objective most likely just turns you into a fat pinata, yelling "come and get me".
    6. If you loose enemy contact, run. Run immediately. Chances are, he maneuvered because a teammate told him, you're there. And you already lost control of the situation.
Whenever I get shot down in Il-2, which happens uncomfortably often, I did not follow the advice given in this video and/or my remarks.

@h0ust0n Considering furballs fun is of course all up to personal taste. You just should not expect to come out victorious or unharmed/undamaged - or successful, in short. And being successful, ist what Sheriff's video is all about. And my remarks are meant to support that.
Personally, I fancy aerobatics and occasionally just flying around, enjoying a nice map in good weather. But that also does not constitute a "successful fighter pilot" :)

ps. i love how just watching IL-2 videos makes me suddenly very aware of all the stains on my screen xD
pps. just a simple defensive action i want to throw in the soup: whenever you are turn fighting someone, especially if he's on your 6, try to add as much vertical movement on your maneuvers as possible, to transform your speed into potential energy instead of burning it. it can be used anywhere from gaining energy advantage on the enemy on your 6 to better placing your gunsight on your enemy.

  • @yammoyammamoto8323
    @yammoyammamoto8323 Před 2 lety +1

    Great video...
Energy fighting really is a super complex topic on its own, but maybe the one topic that makes WWII The Epitome (imo) of dogfighting. As no WWII plane has an engine strong enough able to allow it to climb vertically. Generally, plane designers had to choose between stability, top-speed, power, roll-speed, turn-speed - without being the best in all categories. The greater your understanding of how different models stack up against each other, the better decisions you will make.
    Example
Me, flying a P38, getting stalked by a FW190 while returning to base... (iirc, we were both RTB after very long sorties)...
Knowing my P38 would not be able to outrun the FW, I know that at lower speeds, I might have a better chance, as the P38 is more stable.
So - I started a series of maneuvers set to force the FW into bleeding more speed than needed.
IIRC, there had been about 5-10 minutes worth of "posturing" and "positioning" leading up to the start of the clip, where the FW pilot decided to go all in...
Try to spot the mistakes both of us make in the heat of things - as we trade the roles of being "hunter/prey", back-and-forth between us. :)

We were spinning and rolling and flipping around each other, neither could get any kind of good shot on the other. In the end, he broke off and I went back to base, where I think I got shot down by my own team......and then booted off the server for some reason......yeah, its a fun dogfight, but it was a weird ending.

also the best defence is not flying solo(whenever possible). many pilots are on coms online and against that your odds are much poorer. situational awareness is def 1# king in this combat sim. almost all my deaths are loss of SA or that team mate i did not see. having a team mate (more is better) makes a huge difference in SA especially as they can watch your six during an attack, when u are most at risk.

I’ve had a couple of months of practice since watching this helpful video initially and just went back to it today, because I find that I’m blacking out / tiring in the Spit IX when defending with flat or rolling scissors, even when just trying to out-turn a 109. Is the simple answer to be lighter on the stick? I also try to use flaps [Edit: My bad, I meant trim tabs 🥴] to achieve a tighter turn, but could that be part of the problem? Hope you get a spare minute or two in your busy day to reply. Salut!

dont use the flaps in the spitfire for manevuering. They arent combat flaps. You need to lose speed!
When trying to outturn a opponent lose some speed first to reduce the G load. But overall defending got even more difficult with the G Model.
