Hey guys! Welcome back! We are starting a new series called "RealFlight versus Actual Flight". In this new series, we fly the simulation model in RealFlight 9.5 first then fly the actual model in the field.
In this episode, we flew the Blade 230 S V2. We used Real Flight 9.5 to practice and improve our hovering and flying skills and then transition those skills to hovering and flying an actual Blade 230 S V2 in the field!
The good news is that the physics in RealFlight is very true to life. The Blade 230 S behaved very similarly from the RealFlight simulation model to the to the actual Blade 230 S V2.
However, because, RealFlight is a simulation software, the "fear-factor" is definitely not there and we were definitely more relaxed and able to perform maneuvers we are not yet ready to do in the actual flight.
The Blade 230 S V2 is a very stable heli and Jon and I both feel that it is a great starting place for the beginner RC heli pilot. However, the probability of a first successful RC heli hover, goes up dramatically if you use and practice on a simulation software like RF9.5 first!

Jon, you did way better than I did!. I just picked up a 230 S yesterday and got maybe 20 seconds of flight time. I never did a trim flight because I didn't know it was needed. I think I was over correcting big time so I hit the panic button and it went inverted hard left into my garden. Diced up some poblanos, a main rotor grip, which let the rotor flop into the canopy destroying that too. Thank goodness for amazon!.

Great sim flying. You have "respect" for the simulation and "transfer of skill" to real field flying an actual rc heli. Most people need to crash a few times and waste $$$, before they develop that respect for their simulator. A few tips:
a.) Number #1 rule. Not an plane = No sweet spot for the servo sticks to "hold and relax". Fingers are jiggling all the time. Add some wind (5mph & gust) because unless you fly indoors it will never be smooth. Especially, flying a small rc heli. Flying an rc helicopter to be able to have precise control or 3d flying requires developing quick "kung fu" finger with total absolute orientation(from sim training).
a.) Do not fly in a circle. Shoot for a square. This teaches you that heli's do not "bank" like planes, they slide(like drift cars) and pitch(fwd/back like a porpoise) to control speed. You know that banking with a plane = loss of elevation, right, same thing with heli. Also, flying in a square teaches you orientation. If you just dive/hold a turn you never know what angle you will recover from = orientation confusion.
b.) Change scenery to the one with the runway and street lines. Practice driving over lines like you are driving a car. Fly slow, turn flat with absolute control. It's all about leaning fwd/back and side/side.
c.) For hover orientation practice position the model right in front of your screen. As, if you are flying 5 ft away from your face. Closer = more control. Ofcourse, you can not do this with your real model in front of your face.

What mode is best on the controller, 1 or 2, or is it personal preference? Talking about the control sticks on the controller.
@@RayRay-zc2ed Great question. I've been out of it for awhile, so I had to google this. I think 99% of rc heli pilots fly mode 2. That setup looks like this.
Left stick = blade pitch & rudder. [note: throttle = main blade rpms is held steady or follows linear throttle curve in tx, thus lift is mainly controlled by main blade pitch]
Right stick = (fwd/bk) & banking(left/right).
It makes the most sense for control.
Your left stick will require rock solid up/down pitch control, while jiggling side/side for rudder control.
Then the right stick controls total swash plate movement: fwd/back/side/side and you can tune your tx to have equal fwd/bk and side/side stick throw. Equal feel needed for flying sideways and even piroflips.
However, Aussie's and some airplane flyers like mode 1. In this mode, the swashplate movement is now controlled across two separate stick motion. It would seem "natural" until you realize that an RC helicopter is not an airplane and is naturally unstable. It is a jiggle fest. That makes controlling a helicopter extra challenging if you want absolute hover control, invert control and 3d stunt flying. However, if you just want to fly easy circles in one direction and not hover too long it can be done. Just my humble opinion, I'm sure some Aussie's and airplane flyers will give some feedback.
Heck try it for yourself both ways on your simulator, it should be able to switch you. Have fun.

I can't believe I learned all this at one time. You know all this info is on the internet, and it's fairly easy to separate "preferences" from "best practices".

By any chance could you give me info on how you programmed your control to run 230s in real flight also sitting up real flight to work with it. Thanks
I have Realflght 9.5 and two examples of the 230S. Realflight doesn't fly like the real thing, it's easier to fly. Realflight gives an instant response. The real thing thing gives a delayed response because the servos take time to return when you release the sticks. Try it on the bench and you will see what I mean. The real thing can get into a pendulum movement from side to side which is difficult to stop.

There is! Three Safe modes: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced
Just a remark, I dont know what you are doing with the trims, but FBL helicopters are not supposed to have trimming enabled, as that will register as a continuous control input. If you need trimming something you need to do it on th FBL (or with the servo links). You should *always* have all trimming set to zero on FBL helis and even better disable trimming all together! Cheers.

I can not get modes or panic to work on rf9.5. It's 1 mode or nothing....

Hi! For helicopters, I’m a newbie so I only fly on Safe Select beginner mode. This has stabilization . I’m trying to get more comfortable with Intermediate and Advanced mode.
Are you running windows 10 and did you get digital download or the actual box.
Yes. Windows 10 with the full retail box that comes with transmitter.
Hello! I really enjoyed seeing the comparison of the Blade 230S on RF vs the real thing.
What's the difference between the steam version and the DVD version? I have been using the DVD version on windows 7. Works great for me. My brother purchased the steam version and cannot get the software to recognize the controller. He is running a windows 10 gaming system.
I was sure that Jon's friend was a "plant" and was going to do some nice 3D but Not...They are getting there though, The 270 does make enough torque for the expert to have fun with.

Absolutely! It is how my dad and I learned to fly RC helis! The physics is not 100% identical to the real world but it is definitely very close enough to prepare you for the real thing!

Don’t practice with such a small Heli on sim. Pick a 700 and you will progress faster
U definitely DON'T want a ratcheting throttle on a helicopter! 1 click can be way too much! (Why old heli transmitters had no ratchet & planes did, years ago).
TOO, back when I was learning heli, we had a mandatory 10 full tanks of hovering in a day BEFORE even considering forward flight.
