Maria Callas' final appearance on the operatic stage was in Tosca at Covent Garden's 1965 Royal Gala. For many opera lovers, Maria Callas and Tosca's Vissi d'Arte are inseparable. "I lived for art; I lived for love" became La Divina's cri de coeur, her swansong, the perfect expression of her own triumphs and tragedies. This unrivaled recording is from that legendary Zeffirelli production in 1964 and is one of just many jewels in the Maria Callas Live edition.

A few points to remember. Some people below argue that she is overly emotive but we must remember that she is not performing for the camera. This is being performed in one of the largest opera houses in the world and her slightly exaggerated expressiveness is needed to reach fully into the house. Also, her vocal coloring with its myriad emotional nuances is reflected in her physical expressiveness. She always became the character that she was performing, even in concert. I saw her in Chicago on her final tour just months before her death. Although she was performing with just a piano accompaniment and with a diminished [to some degree] voice, and dressed only in a plain white gown with a red stole, she managed to become before my eyes a Sicilian peasant girl [Voi lo sapete[, a Spanish noblewoman [Ximene's aria from Le Cid], a French royal person [Elisabetta's aria from Act ! of Don Carlos]. It was an unworldly experience.
For what those comments? She is just genial!

To paraphrase-to sing tragedy, you have to live tragedy.
What I think is too often overlooked in Callas's singing is how subtle and expressive her phrasing was. If she had been a violinist, she would have been one of the greatest in the world. The fusion of this sheer musicianship with her unrivaled emotional intensity is a miracle that I cannot explain.

@@InSheerPleasure69 Listen to her in, of all things, Juliet's Waltz. The high notes are strained (I think this was late in her career), but the rest is superbly nuanced, and no one could match her chromatic scales.
She was an excellent pianist herself, an all rounded musician with perfect pitch ear before being a vocal miracle, that's the reason, she understood music deeply the way each composer meant it to be... Her fraseggio was unique, whether it was Puccini or Verdi or Rossini.. She was a musician first!

No one could take these words and paint sonically as she could. An actress. A Cantor. A Master; dare I say genius.
I wasn’t an opera fan until I heard Maria Callas. She is an archetype that the world will never forget.

I come back to this recording frequently. Voice, hands, mouth, eyes, posture, genius... all together in beauty showing a WOMAN, a Performer, all so superlatively blended together that you can feel it down your spine. No previous knowledge of music required. Just your educated sensivity.

I am not an opera fan, but this incredible woman amazes me with her beautiful and powerful singing. When you don't understand the lyrics (I don't), but still are brought close to tears (I am), you know you are in the presence of some unearthly power /talent/artistry that is rare and awe-inspiring.

One of the greatest divas of ALL time. I read her biography and found her passionate about all things in her life. Saddest thing for her was Onassis’ betrayal. I left flowers at her grave in Pere Lachasse cemetery in Paris!!! And cried for her.

@@boubou230910 I recommend checking out her Tosca in Mexico City from 1950 when she was in her prime! You can find the whole audio on CZcams, it’s not the best quality audio wise but it is fantastic. I am also a metalhead as well as a Callas fan, welcome to the journey!

Callas had everything....voice, looks and acting.
It's like her emotions are trapped raging inside her voice. Almost as if it's going to spin out of control and burst with grief, but powerfully controlled at the same time. Power is definitely a word I associate with her singing. How thrilling, i litterally tear up every time i listen to this performance... And she acts and looks the part perfectly.

I am a Rock/Bowie & Led Zep type but along with Brel & Piaf she astonishes. I envy anyone who saw her and as a 60 year old I have to say she died far, far too young.
The fact that love killed her heart is the only human thing on her. She was from another dimension. I'm in metal, but la divina make me cry every damn time.
I mean she went through a lot. Her mother favored her sister over her, Onassis left her for Jackie Kennedy, She had a miscarriage, and She had major body image issues which ended up messing with her voice towards the end of her life.

The beauty and the depth of this performance is unmatched.
A few words from a metalhead. Its totally wrong to consider her as the best in the world. Cause she wasnt from this world. The only human on her was that love finally killed her heart. She was from another dimension. No human can give an act/perfomance like this here, and not afterwards rest for a month. Nothing from this planet could bear that pain, that emotion, even THAT talent she had. I'm Greek and that fact brought me here. And as a fan of another kind of music I must, MUST, kneel in front of that majesty I just witnessed here. Damn, I fall in love with her.
