Color Mixing Recipes Books Review!

- Hey everyone! Today's video is a review and first impressions of 2 color mixing recipe books.
If you just want the bottom line, here it is-
Both books are nice, offer a lot of information, especially if you are new to mixing colors and color theory.
I think the 1500 book is more to my liking, however, it does contain a lot of information about acrylic and oils, so if that is completely irrelevant to you, you might find it redundant.
It contains sections for portraits and landscapes (sadly the latter only for acrylic and oil). The index is a great touch, where you can find exact recipes for so many objects and subjects.
** The author also has separate editions for Portraits and Landscapes if you're only interested in one.
The books cost about the same on Amazon US, so I think you're getting more for you money with this one.
The 3000 recipes book does contain more recipes, but I find a lot of them redundant. It is smaller and more compact, easier to carry around. It focuses only on watercolors, which is what I'm most interested in.
If I had to choose one I would choose the 1500 book.

The 1500 Color Mixing book I found years ago was and continues to be a great investment for me. Years ago for my oil painting portrait studies, now for my watercolor mixing. I appreciate the large swatches with the easy to understand color recipes. Thanks for your video however I don't think that the other book will work for me. Continue to introduce us to the products you find and share your knowledge which is much appreciated!

I have to agree. I bought the book a week or so ago - couldn't wait. But I was hoping for lots of beautiful semi-neutrals. Instead just different purples, greens, oranges and dilutions that I can figure out easily myself. Guess I'll have to figure out the semi-neutrals myself also.
Yes I'm afraid it is lacking... Good that we can play and mix ourselves!
I just ordered the 1500 book. Thanks, I think......Danger, danger watching you tube. Have you seen the ebook by Jane Blundell “Colour Mixing Charts” ? It is so clearly presented. A little hard to read her written comments, but nothing is perfect in this life. It’s close!

Jane Blundell’s mixing books give you a spectrum of mixes BETWEEN two pigments. Obviously not every possible combo, but most of the popular ones. After a while you can extrapolate what you’d get from other similar pigments. It’s quite good for quick references, and also for slow close study. It helps you make better paint purchases, and also stops you buying paints that make unexpected or unnecessarily duplicated mixes. Her books are jam-packed with smaller swatches, not all that white space and colour theory. It’s a serious, technical book but filled with rainbows! No shortage of the ‘less pretty’ mixes, neutrals, darks, greys, etc. Not expensive, but a bit more than these I think. Plus shipping from Oz for the hardcopy. PDF is useful, but I prefer to take it with me to the art shop, or lend it to students. Worth it, for beginners or experts.

Thanks for video. Jane Blundell (Australian watercolorist) has a website which shows what colors look like for different brands and she has a book of mixing colors.

Irit, thank you for this review! I was actually looking at this watercolor color book. The information was really helpful to make the decision that it is not for me. :-) I actually returned books before if they were not my cup of tea after having a closer look at them, but this is way better.

Nice review of these books. I am glad I clicked on your channel to help me decide between the two. I'm only interested in watercolor as well, but as an afterthought, maybe the oil mixes might work with pastels to some extent. Lol! I finally found your Mijello palette, but I saved the money and went with 18 colors instead. I'm too new to all of this, smaller will be fine for some time to come. Thanks again.
Omg this is so helpful! I’ve been looking at these two books and wanted to know which one to get. I think the 1500 book is more self explanatory and very user friendly. Ince you showed the page of the recipes, I knew what it was and knew the amounts were at the bottom of each page. I’m adding it to my wishlist.

These book for oil, acrylic and watercolor is really interesting to have for mixing. I came up with interesting rosy browns the other day and I really like Burnt Umber mixed with Quin. Red, Quin. Rose or Opera Rose together. 😁
I think it's really helpful to have a book that is helping with color mixing. I'm not really great at it. This will make my process less stressful sometimes. 😁
I want to paint more with acrylics too and this could really help for some subjects. 😊
With Titanium White it's better to be a bit more careful because it's like an awful strong white-out and a little bit can go a long way. I was mixing my own pastels last year too. It was not the perfect option for me but I'm still learning. 😁
I think for oil and acrylic it's a lot more useful in my opinion, as it can be quite wasteful to mix colors and not get it right.. Those rosy browns sound lovely! I need to try that 😊
I am very happy that you went rather for the second book - this is the one I have and I also found it super interesting and helpful. I was thinking about buying the oter one also, but I think I will just stick to m Powell book :)

I think it would, it's a good reference no matter which cosistency your paint has, IMO :)

Thank you for the video. I have the 1500 color mixing recipes book. I like the book but I was always confused about the section at the beginning of the book called using the water color grid. Water color dilution level. Measure the Color’s and mixing thr paint on the grid. I think it’s better to just mix abd play with paint on my palette

In the old book you have, does it include pigment numbers on the mixing pages? The 100 mixes turned me off looking at the Amazon preview because they only showed paint names without pigment numbers. Thus it will require me looking up all the windsor Newton pigments to compare to what I have. Plus I am not interested in pages and pages if mixes with similar colors (mixing slightly different yellows, etc). Thanks for the more thorough review to help me make my final decision to not go with the new book.

Sounds like an opportunity for you to write a book! You can cover the items that you think are missing and your experience in this area.

Thanks for your super honest review! I agree with you. Since im starting with watercolors i appreciate showing mixes with complementary colors...! If not whats the point! I asked alyonas if the book was complete and she said it was more complete than the previous one. Im kinda dissappointed. I see the potential of the second book but i want one specialized in watercolor. Theres a niche over there. Someone has to come up with a really good book about mixing in watercolor bible style lol
Glad it was helpful! Like another commentor wrote, the best is making your own swatches with your own paints, but I still think there's a place for such a book and it can be helpful, as long as it shows everything ;)

Yes Joana, the book titled 1500 color mixing recipes has a section dedicated to portraits that seems actually quite extensive.

I don't have it, but I always thought that Lisa Solomon's A Field Guide to Color: A Watercolor Workbook, looked like a more valuable mixing resource.

Haha perhaps, for someone that has the patience for this type of work (not me ;) )
I have bought mixing books...waste of money. Better to do chart for yourself. Every brand is different, and produce different colors. You learn more that way...and your brand.,.brands. Spend the money on several watercolor tablets. An expensive 100% cotton and a cheaper paper . Test on both. Use basic mixing techniques on you tube...this you tuber has good information. Maybe get yourself or better yet make your own color wheel.
