- This week we welcome, Matt Martin. Matt is currently a winger for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League. He has been described as both an enforcer and a grinder while being one of the best guys in the locker room. A veteran of over 725 NHL games - In this episode, Matt describes his evolution as a player, from being a walk-on in Junior to being drafted in the second year of eligibility in a late-round, and how he redefined himself to flourish for so long in that bottom-six role. We also discuss the importance of having a support system when you face adversity in your career, as well as, the power that family provides in leaving hockey life at the door.
This is why I like this podcast so much. I'd say Matt Martin is a player who for pretty much his whole career I've disliked. Guy's beaten up a lot of Flyers, so why wouldn't I? Listening to him talk for an hour totally changed my perspective on him, and I've gained a new found respect for him. I'd have him on my team any day.
Could watch these 2 every week
My fave Matt Martin memory was against the Blackhawks and him spinning Forsling around so they both didn't crash into the boards. Tbh, just showed he's only a fighter if it's necessary and otherwise he's a good guy who does want to keep others safe, even if they're on the other team.
Tough guys on the ice are always the nicest guys off the ice
