"This motor is perfectly fine except for the parts that are absolutely destroyed" - Rob Dahm 2023
I came here to say this xDDD I'M ABSOLUTELY DYING RN
Lol 😂
🤣👏🤣👏🤣👏🤣👏🤣👏
😂 the ad they didn't know they needed
1999 RX7 15000$
Just needs brakes and a cluctch, no low ballers i know what i got XD
Now I'm kinda curious if he can make a 500hp single rotor lol.
What would that sound like?! Please do this!
Yeah no kidding. Lets see it done LOL!
500hp, 200 ft/lb torque
And then slap it on a go-kart
All of the revolutions, for every minute
rob actually managed to get me conditioned that when that engine blew my first reaction was excitement like "oh he's going to rebuild the shit out of this!"
Hahaha the engine conditioned me to be excited too. But it is a cool achievement to blow up the engine at full tilt not because of a mistake. Just raw power and limits of fuel/turbo
@@ChristianAdroverhe talked about it a bit at 31:31
Hell yeah! Rob is such an inspiration. He got me to start building my dream track toy I was putting off for way too long
@@ChristianAdrover no apex seal damage, just bent up the rotor and sheared a key on the multi-piece e-shaft.
@@greatestevar did you not have a cup of copium this morning?
I just found out today My daughter who is 13 has been watching Rob for a little more than a month. She's in advanced Math, Science, Steam. She said it's how rob explains everything and his excitement for engineering that keeps her watching because that's what she wants to do. So thank you rob very much.
There is a book I based my A Level physics project on called "Turbocharging & Supercharging" by Alan Allard. I found it a fascinating combination of practical advice and physics of fluid dynamics, she might like it.

_"An engine runs at its best the moment before it disintegrates."_ - Keith Duckworth; COSWORTH
To anyone that's actually been through the pain and suffering of engine building, this is for whatever reason, absolutely true. I can recall this a few times in my life thinking to myself what went wrong it was running better than it ever has I just roasted a Lamborghini! Then BOOM for no reason LOL
I've only blown up one motor, but man, it was feeling good right before!
So true my mr2 was flying just before it died
@@FrequencyOfThought agree that engins tend to run best before it blows.
tuned alot of 2 strokers profesionaly that run real good and costomers enjoyed there engines for a long time but sometimes with my own engines i done like rob to push the limit and sometimes the limit hit way hard and its just to tair it apart.
my last engine tuned for "minigp minimoto" i havent seen the piston on since spring of 2010 and it gives roughly the same power as it got built.
revs to round 14.000rpm 80cc used it alot on racetrack to fun on the street and a period drove it to work while the car needed a repair...
@@Will_M600 It's probably because whatever is holding it back from its full potential "self clearanced" itself.. Bwahahahah
i swear the 4 rotor hype train NEVER stops and im here for it
Dorito engines are beautiful. I will never be not hyped.
Mechanical engineering student, been working on cars my entire life, currently living with my aunt and uncle who are retired automotive engineers while I'm at school. That is one of the best simplified explanations of bearings and oil I've ever heard. Not something many people talk about, and something a lot of people get wrong. High mileage engines, if maintained correctly, should use the same oil they used when new because the bearings will be the same size and shape they were when new. The temperatures, pressures, and clearances are the same.
maybe? Introduce condensation, combustion by products, fuel, excess heat, and super high boost pressures and shit starts changing size, shape, and composition!
cheers:)
as a Physicist that’s completely wrong.
@@GodsFormula I've had more engines apart than you've seen in your life. I've rebuilt several engines. Have an engine I'm about to rebuild that has 509,000km on it, I'll be sure to measure bearing clearances before machining anything and they'll still be in factory spec.
@@XcoolcoolbeansbeansX sure thing coolcoolbeansbeans
@@boostaddict_if that was the case, there would be no need for any engine rebuilds in road cars.
And both you and I know that they happen… a lot… In the real world, things like cylinder bore coating wear down and lead to burning oil, which eventually gets you oil starvation and consequential loss of material leading to catastrophic failure. Just look at Kia, a 50-60k mile engine has no right in having such catastrophic failures, yet oil starvation is extremely common.
Real engines suffer fuel detonation, oil starvation, rich and lean conditions, all through various degrees through their lifespan, and those will proactively lead to your tolerances going down. And let’s not talk about engines made 50-70 years ago, when machining, fuel management and overal drivetrain technologies where not to modern standards
Watching Rob work on rotaries gives me the confidence to work on a rotary I don't have.
lmao same! i feel foolishly smart lol
Any day with a 4 rotor video upload is a good day, we haven't seen this ol' girl for quite a while. The next chapter of the 4 rotor saga will be wild!
At least it blew up trying to do something it wasn't meant to do, rather than blowing up when in it's normal duty! Signs of a solid build tbh given how much you've done with that set up already.
I’ve been out of the loop on the 4 rotor since about when he was doing the first couple dino tests, then I see this. I startled my girlfriend when I yelled “FIVE WHAT??” When he said he’s already done at least 5 near 200mph runs on this engine, and it still ran well enough to only blow when he accidentally boosted it WAY past spec trying to hit 6th. Absolutely unbelievable.
@@thedefenestrator2994 And he hasn't even really done much in terms of customising the engine it's self, other than his dowel hole work and porting. He's gonna CnC the new steels from scratch, and everything to be way beefier and Hold much higher clamping forces!
I love Rob in there hitting buttons like Anikin pod racing trying to get his engine back up.
There's nothing more exciting to hear than "We are building our own engines" after seeing everything you guys go through to get that perfect tune and that perfect run out on the track. 👍

Rob - I am a diesel guy and have just a street 1200HP (capable of 2000)... Duramax - Industrial injection block yada yada - and I have a massive steel girdle for bracing the entire aluminum block - i have lost thrust bearings and other thinga... but never had major block damage and its totally due to the girdle preventing warping.
I think you are spot on to put a steel girdle brace of some kind to keep the 4 rotor from warping - perfect plan - Way to go man... take it to the moon... you got this...
Rob has mastered the hard out of his videos, now he's practicing hard ins. I feel like I started this in the middle of the video LOL
wait this IS the middle of a video, he shared this before!! The followup!
Imagine how fast it would go without the drag of a missing rear screen.
If you’ve seen wind tunnel testing, then you’d know that’s not effecting it as much as you’d think. Robs a smart person, if it was gonna hold him back that much, there would have been one put in before this event.
it missing isn't really causing anything as long as the wing isn't there. the bigger issue is the carbon splitter/plate pulling away from the bottom of the car. they're likely going to have come up with a better way to strengthen it and smooth out the transition from the bumper to the splitter so it's not trying to rip it off the car. now if they were doing track stuff, 100% the window needs to be there because it's effecting the air hitting the wing.
He needs it out to let out all the smoke.
it really does make a big difference@@1216jimmyz
@@1216jimmyz you're so, SO wrong. It VERY much matters. You've got a giant opening where the air is expecting a surface, so that creates incredible amounts of turbulence that will make the rear end hop all over the place. The wing won't be as effective, either. Rob isn't concerned about it not because it doesn't matter, but because the car simply isn't built up to a point yet where it matters more than having a bulletproof engine.
I remember when this was a Chassis being caged at a shop and it was just Rob still working on suspension geometry to this so many years later! Pretty wild ride and now your gonna be machining engines basically dudes living the gear head dream XD
I love how he explained oil and pressure waves.I can listen to him explain pretty much anything. He simplifies and makes stuff simple to understand. More great RD content!
Yes more 4 rotor content, I can't get enough of this. I love the half mile runs this car does, I think it is the perfect vehicle for it. Thanks Rob and team.

"This motor is perfectly fine, apart from the parts we destroyed "
The optimism of this man has me smiling ear to ear 🤣
😂😂😂😂. I heard that and was like… uhhh yeah 🤦♂️
I love how Rob has set and forgotten all his patreon tier descriptions, and that they're all almost 5 years out of date. Crazy. Mad respect. Doing Gods work.
I've never seen someone excited to blow a motor, except for Rob. "it's beautiful, this is exciting" then you went Rob Nye AF which was amazing, along with the BOMB at the end. Insane video, truly amazing. You deserve your own TV show. Too good.
1:45 Seeing a rotary so violently do a burnout to the point where the entire suspension is flexing is impressive and just shows the insane amount of HP and Torque it is making.
Man I've been following this channel for a number of years now and was aware of it for quite a while before that point. The further I get into my engineering degree the more i appreciate channels like this. I'm very excited to see where this will end up going.
I'm not a rotary guy (yet) but can't overstate how much I appreciate you getting granular into the science, mistakes, lessons and response. You might be my favorite car guy on CZcams.
I can't help but think that you're a certified car legend in the making man. All this knowledge and trial and error in order to make the best rotary powered car. When this man starts chilling, in his 60s or whatever. The stuff he'd have achieved will put him in the same leagues as Mr.Nagata and Nakai san and all of them
Im glad you finally posted this video, it's crazy how far you have come with pushing the rotary space and sharing all your knowledge about it openly! I can't wait for my Dahm 4 rotor engine!
The process of the 4 rotor has been EPIC to have been a Subscriber during all the early development... Now to see your Really REALLY stepping it up to an in house CNC manufactured parts .. Rob my hat is off to you and your team... Isaiah is THE man!
The Tony Stark of rotary engines. Love watching Rob do his thing pushing those motors. His passion for cars is contagious
I love that this channel has made enough money to allow Rob to keep a smile even when he hurts the 4 rotor with a tuning error... That says a lot. Great outlook!!!!!
Man that rotor dent tho
That's the right mindset bro, Never Give up
The hairline difference between genius and sunk cost fallacy… it’s a hard one. Rob is on the right track though.
I've been following Rob since I was in high school. 17 years now, and I'm still amazed by the intelligence you posess. I love the attitude....break it, find it, fix it, send it. atleast IMO ... Thank you :)
I've been smiling through the disassembly, just admiring all the parts coming off and recognising the progress that they embody. And I was excited to see more. AND I love the fact that the 4 rotor is being flogged hard and isn't some kind of show pony trailer queen. Lets GO! ROTARY POWER!
Let's Go Rob, I LOVE it when you upload, you are so smart I learn something every time I watch your videos. I cant wait to see the engine you build!
Rob is an absolute legend. The ending was amazing. I look forward to the details on rebuilding the engine!
Everytime I put on a Rob Dahm video, I might as well make some popcorn becuase its always a journey of a movie. Its crazy how much he can cram into 30 mins an still make it flow perfectly. As Always Rob, Fantastic Video!
Rob shows how underrated the Rotary engines are.Dr. Felix Wankel would be proud of you Robb
Amazing you saved the engine as a whole after that, just shows how well built it is.

The bearing explanation was great, can't wait to see the new billet motor build!
Thank you for all the content of trials and tribulations to get to where you have. It truly is an inspiration for me to try and keep pushing. Depression is a hell of a thing, and it's hard to be motivated. Seeing your passion and fortitude in tough situations, going through the process to make sure everything is still good and overcoming issues, it makes my little project feel so much more doable since there was a day where you were just like me, a normal dude with a dream turning wrenches in his spare time. You're my favorite part of grid life the last 2 years, though I left you alone this year since I didn't want to interrupt you getting the 3 rotor ready for your time attack. From someone who's been watching for about 10 years now, thank you for keeping with it.
Bummed for the mishap, but excited for the future! Love the science lesson at the end. Keep the videos coming Rob & Crew
Yeah even the steve morris smx can only handle 70 psi max...so you hitting 60 is alot. Im really impressed! I know it sucks it broke but what a way to go out. Learning and pushing this platform to the absolute max. Wonderful content! ❤
You know you've made a good engine when someone is comparing it to a smx
i don't know a ton about rotaries except for they sounded amazing when i was drag racing in my 20s... I love how technical Rob is about angles, weights, symmetry, balance and everything for a rotary... Some other youtubers take apart their motors after blowing but the precision he has is, in my opinion, unparalleled in this social media car-universe.
Its crazy to see how much you have been able to push the rotary engine all these years, I remember watching you years back in the old garage when you was still first building the 3 rotor with the old yellow lambo sitting next to it. Iv always loved the rotary so its nice to see someone show what the limits really are and how you fix it and make it stronger.
I cannot wait to see the machining of the new engine parts
I watch every 4-rotor video just to listen to it scream.
FOCK it sounds so damn good
Even though the carr hasn't hit 200mph, we know damn good and well that it will have no problem reaching and surpassing that speed. You'll get there, and we are here for that moral support.
All of this just gets me excited for the new phase of this project! After all of these years we all know Rob is going to push this beast even harder and make it work.
Im amazed that its holding up to that much power as it stands. I think the extra bracing across the housings and irons that you mentioned will significantly reduce the wobbling caused but such extreme power. Excited to see how it comes along. Im sure your pockets are hurting, but im glad to see you are seeing this dream through. Best of luck team.
Probably needs more dowels too.

The ability to shear that key, is insane! Just think the stress on key that also had to make it past the taper fit. This is awesome stuff!
Thank you so much for keeping it technical but still entertaining and not dumbing it down/bro-ing it up. Tribology is such a fascinating field of study and so important to our modern world.
You need to shorten that shifter, you are reaching way up and over. Takes so much time to do just that, not to mention it just looks uncomfortable.
you need the leverage on a sequential
ive never been a huge fan of rotary engines, dont get me wrong theyre cool, but im really sad to see yours blow. but luckily with the amazing work you guys put into it, it blew in a great way. really hope to see you get over the 200mph mark.
Someone smart once said “left to their own devices, a turbo will either blow itself up, or blow your engine up.” I’m so glad this engine survived except for the “parts that are absolutely destroyed” even with 60PSI of boost. I can’t wait to see the future of this build, which is CRAZY to say considering everything you’ve ALREADY done. 🤯🤯🤯
Have almost zero knowledge of rotary engines (I know the concept), not involved in RX-7's in anyway, and barely getting back into the racing community, and this is one of the most interesting and educational videos I have ever come across.
I knew my boy would come through on his promise! Cant wait to see the c8 when you finally 4 rotor that thing.
I was thinking about that recently. Didn't he say the 12-Rotor ain't much bigger than a V8, or atleast got the same mounting pattern as some chevrolet V8? The C8 should have enough room for that, surely.

I love it when you look at toasting an engine like it's a good thing. Then immediately deep dive into the forensics of the situation. Because: science.
What a wonderful attitude.
I loved the tear down of the engine after, just sorry that the engine had to blow. Nice video, looking forward to seeing how you fix and improve the engine.
When will we hear something about the twelve rotor ?
When they have enough content to post the next video. They are currently designing parts for it, not super exciting on video for most people to just watch CAD design being done. It needs an intake, exhaust system and probably everything else externally.
The engine was originally designed for a boat and ran with a carburetor. Putting it in a car and running EFI requires a load of new parts that all have to be custom made from the ground up.
Thats a whole lotta hp.. now if you could get the torque to match then that thing would be beastly!!
A 2000hp @ 9000 rpm engine will have less torque than an engine that runs 2000hp @ 7000 rpm
it has plenty of torque....
Does it tho? He is already spinning the wheels in 5th lol
Rob you're really appreciated as a content creator and car guy. Thank you so much for putting safety first and just walking us through all the stuff as if we were right there. Loved your back music, your cut tos, the angles you used and just the way you put out content. Great work!

Awesome video Rob, I saw the onboard footage from the other car awhile back and was waiting to see what happened to the motor. Thanks for the extra explanations that always make your videos so interesting. It's a pity it let go when you were well on the way to the 200+mph, but I am sure you will build it back better.
