Levels of Respirator protection

  • A video detailing the levels of protection each type of respirators gives the user.
    Starting with dust masks which are next to useless, to half-face respirators offering much better protection.
    To full-face air-purifying respirators (gas masks) offering protection of the eyes and face as well as the respirator system.
    To air-supplying respirators which work in zero oxygen environments and create positive pressure, up to the re-breather closed circuit respirators.

    After protest inside the tear gas smoke for two months, people found out the tear gas are actually expired, many are suffering from the side effect of expired tear gas including skin ulceration, respiratory disease and diarrhea.

    New subscriber here. I'm enjoying your videos. Thanks for making this one.
    I think your explanation of the rebreather was pretty spot on. You said something like "when you breath out it's mostly carbondioxide". We actually breath out more oxygen then carbondioxide. Normal air has about 0.4% CO2 and this raises to 4% when we exhale. Normal air has about 20% oxygen and when we breath out this goes down a few percent. We breath out more oxygen than CO2 (this is why mouth to mouth respiration works).
    I don't think your comment about CO2 matters much. Again, great video. I'm glad I found your channel. Thanks.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  Před 6 lety +1

  • @Firefuzz11
    @Firefuzz11 Před 6 lety +2

    The SCBA(self contained breathing apparatus) is pretty much the best protection you can get. Most SCBAs have many options for cylinder sizes. My fire company uses “45 minute” cylinders which means that we have 45 minutes of air at a working pace depending on the volume of work and how in shape you are. At rest, those cylinders are estimated to last close to an hour and a half.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  Před 6 lety

      Yeah as mentioned particularly because you get a positive pressure seal so nothing can leak into the mask and you can operate in a zero-oxygen environment or a super heavily contaminated one.

    For the rebreather, I assume the scrubber contains something like those Silica sachets (that scrubs out water vapour, this scrubs out CO2). Because it constantly absorbs/adsorbs the air you breathe out, and the system can't generate new air you'll have less air over time (the CO2 you breathe out was the O2 you breathe in)

    If I might try to explain the suffocation danger of rebreathers:
    tl;dr rebreathers don't introduce new oxygen to the system and remove CO2 so your body doesn't realize it's suffocating.
    CO2 buildup is one of the few chemical indicators that let the human body know it's suffocating. It is transported through the blood in the same manner that oxygen is because it is the waste product oxygen is turned into. Ordinarily, the CO2 and oxygen are in fairly stable concentrations in the blood, so once CO2 concentrations go up, the body realizes it is suffocating.
    Since rebreathers scrub CO2 from the air, it can't build up in the air/blood. Even though there is little carbon dioxide to build up, there is still a finite amount of oxygen. Your body continuously converts it into carbon dioxide which is then scrubbed from the air. The atmosphere in the rebreather remains carbon dioxide free but oxygen concentration continues to decrease. Other gasses like nitrogen will displace oxygen in your blood, but the body won't notice as it is tuned to listen for CO2 signals. Less and less oxygen actually makes it into your blood because its concentration decreases and nitrogen fills your blood. Oxygen levels as high as 16% (atmosphere is about 21%) are too low for humans to maintain normal brain function, and you will start to lose your senses until you either rip off your rebreather or suffocate inside it.

      Soviet particle filters contain asbestos, you can force a Nato filter on the GP-5 damaging it, not making an air tight seal but it's safe for cosmetic reasons, or you could buy a Polish FP-5 filter or similar that is safe to use and actually works.

    Good video thanks.
    The rebreather section is a little confused because you've got several different types of machine mixed up.
    Firstly, air isn't oxygen and oxygen isn't air. Air is a mixture, mostly nitrogen, and some oxygen. The oxygen supports burning, and life. Firefighter open circuit breathing sets contain air. If they contained just oxygen then the exhaled oxygen that is dumped out the exhale valve would greatly speed up combustion, and the firefighter would catch fire. So just air in the cylinders.
    The ones that "explode" are "self rescue" rebreathers. (Closed circuit) They're simple units that people carry with them for emergency use. They're usually in a sealed box where they can't get wet. In an emergency, you open the box, pull on the hood and start breathing. The chemical inside is KO2, potassium superoxide. It reacts with the carbon dioxide in exhaled breath. The carbon is chemically bound to the potassium to make potassium carbonate, K2CO3. There's oxygen atoms left over and they combine to make oxygen molecules, O2, that you can breathe. You can't run out of oxygen because the reaction makes one and a half times more oxygen than it absorbs CO2. The exhaled breath goes through the breathing tube, through the potassium superoxide and into a bag. Then inhale, from the bag, through the potassium superoxide, the breathing tube and into the wearer. This back and forth motion of the breathing medium is like the back and forth motion of a pendulum, and so these belong to the larger group called pendulum rebreathers.
    The unit you demonstrated is another pendulum rebreather, but it's an oxygen rebreather. The working principle is similar to the self rescue unit, but the chemical used is usually calcium hydroxide. This is cheaper, and much safer, but it doesn't generate oxygen. All it does is combine with the CO2 making calcium carbonate (like sea shells). So oxygen has to be added. That comes from a cylinder of pure oxygen.
    Units vary in design, some have a continuous small flow of oxygen and with those, you just turn on the oxygen, open the breathing valve and start breathing. More oxygen is added than you can use and so gradually the unit only has oxygen and your exhaled CO2 in it. Others top up the oxygen as the bag collapses due to you removing oxygen. To start those units you must flush out the air because air is mostly inert nitrogen. Fill the bag using the manual addition valve then inhale from the bag and exhale to the air until the bag is empty. Repeat that twice more. You can now use the rebreather. Do another flush every half hour or so because there's nitrogen dissolved in your body which will come out.
    That covers surface use rebreathers. Diving rebreathers used deeper than 9m can't contain pure oxygen as it causes convulsions at that pressure, so they're a whole other, vastly vastly more complex thing and I've gone on long enough for a CZcams comment.
