Maverick was launched as alert fighter after wolfman was shot down, ice man had to hang in and survive against 6 by himself until maverick got “going supersonic be there in 60 second”

You argued over how many and what missiles to take, but then launched 3 aircraft simultaneously. In the movie Maverick and Merlin sat alert 5 and did not launch until after Hollywood and Wolfman were downed. There were never more than 2 Tomcats in the fight.
They also went out to hunt all the "Migs" from the start. The movie scenario started out with the two Tomcats getting ambushed by 4 more planes than expected and starting the encounter just trying to survive. A F-14 vs F-5 fight is unbalanced to begin with, this just stacked the deck in their favor.
I've been trying to remember if it was 5 or 6 MiG-28s. I remember the "not one pair, but two pair." And then Wolfman saying "there's another one" when the 5th showed up, but I don't remember the 6th.

Also the roe were "witness hostile act" so fox 3 bvr was not on. They were necessarily defensive.

The tomcat is the F22 of its time... watching the video really confirmed that idea. And we aren't even counting the phoenix here.
Should switch out the Tomcat for various other aircraft for fun.

Hey Cap, I think myself along with everyone else just getting into DCS would love to see a setup tour of not just your setup, but everyone in GR. From Rudder pedals to monitors/VR headsets. It would be a pretty cool video/series, being that GR is the best DCS channel on CZcams!

Way back in 2005 I was at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, AZ and saw two F-5’s painted in some blue camo livery, complete with the red star on the tail wing and all. The air wing guys told me they were used as more realistic opposing forces for training with the squadron down there, which at the time were flying Harriers. Thank you for showing some love to the F-5!! You all did a fantastic job in this bout of calibrating and then recalibrating tactics after each round. Great flying as always Grim Reapers!!
Great scenario, I was hoping more for more of the movie fight with two Toms having to get visual and tangle with the "Migs" then send a third Tom from the carrier and what not. Perhaps a future Version 2.0 of this fantastic movie fight to really nail it down. Good to see Kortana back. She's a beast in the air (or underwater in a U Boat)

"Blob" was the original tactic in the movie. They came in showing 2, then 4, and then 6.
It'd be interesting to run again with the tomcats going 2 v 6 and then adding one if one gets shot down/out of fight.
Also starting with ROE where the migs have to fire first. Tomcat 3 could engage bvr by that point.
Good fun though! Maverick helmet was a nice touch.
For the filming of the movie, the producers paid for two missiles to be fired, each filmed from multiple angles for later splicing into the movie. If I remember correctly....
This one was definitely a lot of fun to watch.

I just love how Matrix' (and Kortana's) chatter adds a whole extra level of immersion.
I know Matrix was an actual RAF fighter pilot ( I think that is true, Early 80s Harriers?) but is Kortana also an actual pilot?
Matrix flew Jaguars in RAF. Kortana jumps out of planes but does not fly.

I loved the NOT named Red Star version of the F-5. I know it wasn't a Great dog fighter but it's a beautiful and aggressive looking airframe.

From what I remember the baddies that are supposed to be in Top Gun 1 or Russia or China or Iran that's it because they all export and import stuff with each other in real life I wish they would keep at least three Tomcats still in action just for air shows you know last time I saw on Tomcat was when I was a little kid the guy afterburner over everybody and you can feel that shit in your chest and then when he popped G and went straight up your ears would ring. Then he did a slow fly by the slowest he could do before he stalled. Pretty remarkable plane and they also displayed it and they put the wings out it's huge that's what she said I thank you LOL. I appreciate the gr guys and what you guys do I know this is not the official page. I don't know who runs this one but if they get these messages I've been watching for over 4 years now so thank you for your guys's time and effort.

I was big into plastic models when the original Top Gun came out. I already had an F-14 built, so I built an F-5E. Mine didn't end up black like the "MiG-28" It ended up in a blue splinter camouflage, and I won a blue ribbon at the country fair with it. I guess if the "MiG-28" had a NATO reporting name it could be "Feline". 😂
You know.. this could be a series. The navy used A-4s, F-5s, F-16s, and Kfirs as aggressor aircraft. A Mirage 2000 could stand in for the Kfir if need be.

Didn’t the RoE in the film prevent the Tomcats shooting first? Otherwise they would have splashed the MIGs from 60 miles with their video cameras and phoenixes.

I've been making this request for a very long time now... Please fly MIG-28 VS MIG-29! Lol same plot as Top Gun Maverick with the Planes of original Top Gun however in this case Maverick is in stolen MIG-28 while engaged with (for the time;) advanced MIG-29! Both Planes black paint red star skins🙏👍

Couple of things to make it more match the movie:
-ROE: no firing before merge
-3rd Tomcat launches only if one of the two first ones is shot down

2x2 is a good loadout for CAP or alert fighter. -14's rarely carried more than 2 phoenix if they carried them at all

you could say the F-5 is a older relative of the F-18, as the YF-17 was heavily based on a F-5 derived prototype called the P-530

Please include MANPADS Stingers, Avenger Air Defense System, C-Ram, NASAMS, Patriot, Plus Allied Nations, Iron Dome, IRIS-T's, Gepards and so on you get the idea! However it'd be really cool if you used different variants of certain systems making it more difficult as it goes on with more modern variants and if you could layer up at certain points! Especially against the target GR Headquarters near The Great Pyramids!🙏👍
Awesome video! The F-14 is just a much superior weapon system as a whole. The thing is, as AIM/ACEVAL showed, even with 2:1 kill ratio in favor of the F-14 (or F-15) it was still not worth it for the blues. Hence the decision to develop fire and forget radar missiles.
An idea to make this even harder for the F-14's, don't let the 3rd one launch until the first pair merges with the 28's!
I am leaning towards a Mig-28 being an F-20 Tigershark, as that would be closer to 80s tech.

BIg movies dont use stock footage, they work with the CIA/Hollywood Liasion Office in the Pentagon, so in the second movie the ask the real captain of the aircraft carrier to turn into the light for a specail shot, the U.S. Navy Captain says "it cost over 25,000 dollars an hour to run this boat" one of the producer runs away and comes back up with a check for 25,000 dollars...and that's the shot in the new movie were the sun is perfect in the shot on the carrier...

I don't think either side would have had drop tanks, they were configured for A2A so they would have had the max loadout for that purpose.

your not going to make it far enough to engage in a fight for more than 1 min with out having had the extend range tanks to get you to the fight. you would have dropped them before engaging but you would have took off with them.

Cap you need to change ur top display to the camera to easily ID targets then you dont need to zoom so much

We were pretty good, not much cheating going on in this one.
In the movie they used F-20 Tigersharks, a improved design that was basically a highly upgraded F-5, intended for the export market but never got any sales. Topgun was its high-water mark.

Being that only 3 F-20 Tigersharks were ever made and i believe that 2 of them crashed... no they didn't. They were just F-5s painted black.
The immediate visual ID between the two is the engines. The F-5 had two relatively small engines, while the F-20 had a single, more powerful engine. The single engine is clearly seen in the movie. For the sim-battle here, you are correct.@@ApacheVR-4
@@xet1sw156 O I know the differences between the F-5 and the F-20. The jets playing the Mig-28s in Top Gun DEFINITELY have 2 engine nozzles. They can be clearly seen in the ending dogfight that the Grim Reapers are re-enacting here. They used F-5Es and F-5Fs during the filming of the movie. This is well documented.
In the movie, they were clearly using F5e/f tiger, not F20.
The difference are F20 have one big engine's exhaust vs F5's twin small engine's exhaust.
Then you can clearly see there is no cooling vent in the base of Mig28's vertical stabilizer, indicates they'r F5 tiger; because F20 have them.
