Deep down, lots of us still crave the tight-knit, sitcom friend circle, and as cheesy as it sounds, lots of us still believe in true love. Still, while Ted’s pursuit of true love was often warm and appealing, the journey also included plenty of bad behavior, and perfect examples of what not to do in dating and relationships. ALMOST? It totally ruined it. Now when I catch ads about it, it is frustrating... the MOTHER is who I'm invested in & ruining the best built up (at the time) to a relationship with such a flimsy cop out... but WORST OF ALL... killing off the MOM so I can watch the spin-off about Lizzie McGuire? I cared about the mom & having her FRIDGED for shock factor isn't going to ENDEAR me to Lizzie nor do I know ANYONE watch HIMYF ... I'm guessing that they renewed it cause they're hoping that we all got head injuries & forgot HIMYM ending let-down.
Ted is SO much like Ross from Friends it is not even funny.

True, nearly other relationship Ted had got more screentime. Tracy was just a plot device for Ted to have kids and Robin in the end too.
She was my favorite character on the show and she had the least screen time
the biggest loss is that they could have made the finale work and still killed the mother off. You could have tied it into a theme that appeared throughout the show: the idea that we can't move forward in our lives until we move on. Ted doesn't just meet Tracy the day of Barney and Robin's wedding, he met her the day he finally moved on from Robin.
Previous seasons made it clear that Ted and Robin were incompatible, with the twist that she wasn't the mother being creative and subverting expectations. But to force them together in the last three minutes just seemed incredibly anticlimactic. Plus, they should have had Tracy be a main character in the last three seasons or so, then we could get to see them as a proper couple.
Disagree. She did not need more screen time than she was given, she was just handled wrong.
Owl House was a show with a fraction of the time HIMYM had, and had characters with at most as many minutes as Tracey, but they were able to endear themselves far more with far less.
The issue was the abrupt nature of how we went from Tracy and Ted (finally) getting married, to Tracy dies, to Ted and Robin get together in the span of a few minutes. If early in the final season we knew that this was Ted tell the kids the story because the mother is gone the daughter calling him out that the story was "really all about how he's totally in love with Aunt Robin" the twist and final scene would have gone over better.
@@whatdidclaysay8325 this could work! Alternatively, even if they chose to go with the alternate ending in which Tracy doesn't die, they still should have made the last three or four episodes less rushed. The finale, Last Forever, should probably have been a three parter instead of a two parter.
@@vitormelomedeiros yeah, it was weird that that spent so much time on Barney and Robin's wedding stretching things out and then the last episode had scenes that could have been their own episode basically and they just blew through it
Yeah, they showed how they werent working as characters but then suddenly had this BUT THEY ARE MEANT TO BE itsss so bad, its stands on superficial ground, instead of having a stronger connection with episodes where they grow together learn to communicate better and just show why they have this amazing love and not it just be Ted seeing her in the first episode and be like "o yeah shes the one" like the love felt shallow to me thst it felt hard to feel at times, later on it feels somewhar better but still didnt cover the issues. If Ted and Robin did have this soul mate moment and them founding the right person in one another i would have said fuck yes perfect for eachother, but then be broken up by them not yet being ready and mature (which she show kinda did but it didnt show them having a deeper love moment except a few scenes) and then GETTING TOGETHER AT THE END now that they are older, wiser and understand love better and see thst they can still make it work TOP TIER
i just feel that the show is soo amazing but handles love sooooo sooooo wrong at a time that it feels like your a flipping a switch from children to adults. Of course I dont mean it should leave that out but when moments are serious characters should just goof of the next scene while they just had the most exhausting moment in their life
HIMYM's Biggest win is when they stuck the landing with the mother and people loved her when it could have easily gone otherwise. Their worst loss was not sticking the landing of their preferred series ending.

My parents got divorced shortly before HIMYM ended, and Barney's quote about their relationship being an extremely successful marriage, that happened to last 3 years, actually helped me get a positive perspective on my family
While I didn't like the ending at all, that was a brilliant quote that I have used with friends who's marriages ended. I tell them they were in love at one point and they had some happy years together. Their marriage was successful, until it wasn't.
Tracy was such a likable, charming character, whom we couldn't help but root for her to find happiness with Ted. She deserved better than to be used as a vessel for Ted's kids, all so Ted could get back together with Robin, who couldn't give him any children.
amm that's not what happened at all, Ted loved the mother of his children more than anything, it just so happens that she died, that's what happens in real life, Ted wanted to move on because he wants love in the new chapter of his life.
The story telling really did her dirty. She's the dead good mother in all those fairy tales.

I agree like she should have at least showed up in the next to last season. That actress made her so loveable, the show did her dirty
I don’t think HIMYM showed it was okay to give up your dreams and chase a job that will make you money. If anything, the show took an interesting and pretty realistic look at how we can achieve our dreams but it might not look like what we imagined. For example, by the end of the series, Marshall is working help the climate as a judge instead of a lawyer and Lily uses her love for art to be a curator rather than a painter. Sometimes we become what we imagined (Ted as an architect or Robin as a reporter) but sometimes we achieve more evolved dreams (Marshall and Lily for example)
the takes in this video are textbook left wing, secular, intersectional-feminist nonsense.
Ted ending up with Robin just reinforces that you can be wrong for someone but be persistent and you will eventually ware her down.
Or get a restraining order slapped on you.

Ted was extremely selfish. obsessed with the idea of "the one", I think it is sad that Tracy was just a pitstop, a way for him to reach that goal and when she died he could go back to Robin.. stupid

Here was a girl who loved him, said yes to marrying him, was perfect for him…..but he gave her up cause he couldn’t let go of Robin.
There is a reason Ted is alone and unhappy the majority of the show: he keep pining for Robin even after she gets engaged to Barney. It’s only when he FINALLY lets her go that the universe rewards him with Tracy
It's why the ending is terrible. Ted had to learn most days the hard way that his love for Robin wasn't going to happen. They only get together by the end when things that once made them inconsolable, like her career and having and raising children became irrelevant. It doesn't reduce that growth throughout the series, but the resolution of his arc sucks.
I think if anything good came out of that ending, it was that Marshall won his bet against Lily. 😂
the way they treated tracy kinda makes me feel of ted having his cake and eating it too. he really got everything he wanted family life for a bit, children and then robin as well, the one arguably that he wanted all along
And it felt like the entire reason, he told his kids about meeting their mother, was to actually tell them he planned on dating Robyn. Instead of the story being about Tracy it was really about Robyn and we all felt manipulated because of it.
What ruined it is pretty simple: the pos finale. Everything was all set up and they literally destroyed/ retconned EVERYTHING from s6-9.
Seriously, you can watch s1-5, skip 10 minutes into the finale, AND NOT MISS A THING!!!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes i think HIMYM’s ending was devised with a shorter series in mind. Doubt the creators expected it to run nine seasons, or that fans would love the Mother’s actor so much.
It's an openly discussed fact that they didn't anticipate it running for more than 3 seasons, and therefore had filmed the kids reaction shots before and didn't change them ...

That’s exactly what it was. The writers clearly had a 5 year plan for the show. How do I know? Cause the finale we got would’ve worked at the end of s5.
I feel like the fact that they stretched Barney and Robin's wedding to nearly AN ENTIRE SEASON LONG ARC filler, full of boring nothingburger, probably confirms this.
It definitely was devised in that way. They filmed that scene (at least the part with the kids) during Season 2. The issue is they didn't stick to that being the end game through a lot of the rest of the show but then made it the end anyway. I will always stick by the idea that the problem wasn't that the show ended with Ted and Robin getting together, it's that they didn't give the news that Tracy was gone any time at all to be absorbed.
A better way would have been to introduce (it was hinted but never anything explicit) that Tracy had died a few episodes from the end of the show. Then that scene makes a lot more sense and isn't a shock to viewers. It would have actually fueled speculation and some level of satisfaction in people that Ted and Robin do end up together in the end.
One of the biggest fan theories about this show that I believe in is that Ted is a biased unreliable narrator and because we are only getting his perspective on things he is embellishing a lot of stuff and recalling things incorrectly on purpose and because it is only him telling these stories he chose to make Barney sound worse than he potentially actually was and the Ted made Barney look bad to make himself look good as a way to potentially justify him eventually ending up with Robin even though we see that Barney and Robin are a much better fit for each other.
That film that Tony and Stella made depicting Ted as the bad guy was as accurate as it gets lol
The weird thing is even BOY MEETS WORLD, a sitcom that is so much older than HIMYM even went out of their way to show the consequences of being a woman-chasing selfish sexist. A teenager acting that way was confronted by girls and they couldn't have the decency to ever put Barney or Ted in their place, even their friends never confronted them, just passively protested quietly and mostly ignored it.
It's unclear how unreliable a narrator Ted is, but one thing I like about HIMYF is that future!Sophie is quite clear on how awful she could be in her 30s, yet she's relatively sympathetic with representing her friends, sitcom caricatures notwithstanding. The show also occasionally focuses on active steps they take to improve themselves.

The show is pretty clear that Ted is not a totally reliable narrator and that it is Ted telling the story of Ted from his perspective which may not always be a completely accurate picture of reality. Criticizing him for "main character syndrome" is not a valid criticism as he's the narrator telling HIS story. He IS the main character.
The good is that the unreliable narrator lets you imagine that the bad things didn't happen. Barney was not nearly as lecherous or misogynistic as depicted, but Ted wanted Barney to look bad next to him. Lily did not do the front porch test or sabotage Ted's relationships, but Ted needed to get out of admitting that he sabotaged his own relationships. The bad is that Ted was a huge jerk with Nice Guy Syndrome and he was the narrator.
Barney was. All evidence including the spin-off show cases this. Lily probably didn’t that because she knew that Ted wouldn’t break up with girls he led on. It’s all true and the only thing not true is that Tes is an unreliable narrator during the convienent parts for you I.e., making Barney look bad???
@@whycaninotfindagood Ted was the narrator and he had an agenda. He needed himself to look like the good guy, but he was a jerk with entitlement issues. An easy and lazy way to look good is for someone else to look bad next to him. That is something jerks do when telling stories, isn't it?
Ted's narration is simply just a medium to tell story by writers.. He is not urrealable story teller.. He believes that he fails very other relationship because he didn't find the mother, his believes in fate thing and universe plan etc but from his story telling we get that ted clearly have issues in his relationship ... But that's doesn't change that fact that what is said about Barney are lies.. I mean Barney try to sell woman, and do what ever it's take to sleep woman sometimes gives sociopath vibes... I don't like writers did those things just for laugh... Ted is kind of person who doesn't like about his friends. But he believes his assement about friends life and his life is correct
The worst thing is killing Tracy in The end, as if she was just a surrogate. No character development at all, in summary.
To be far having her die would make sense why he would be narrating this story but, the biggest issue is him going back to robin. Like if it ended with her death that would work but more is a issue.
It’s crazy that Ted could easily fit into Joe’s character from “You”.
In Season 9, there's an episode ("No Questions Asked") in which Ted is attracted to a girl at the pharmacist's while buying foot powder. He overhears the girl giving her address to the pharmacist, memorizes it, and sends her a letter telling her how he's in love with her and how he overheard her address. (He then regrets mailing it and tries to get it back, thus getting stuck in the mailbox, but the intent was there.) I believe he also stalked Janet at the start (before she turned out to be even crazier than he is), and Stella too. So yeah, the ressemblances are there...

I had a guy friend who was OBSESSED with how I met your mother and begged me to watch it despite my lack of interest. Turns out he wasn't really a friend and was just trying to get in my pants, so I guess he thought I would be the Robin to his Ted if he was patient enough. We haven't spoken in nearly a decade.

I know this type. Total phony who thinks they're deep and a nice guy, but in fact they are trash with no self awareness.
But we have to agree that this show broke stereotypes, they did not sugarcoat tough situations, it was a very touching and raw telling of the tale that touched a chord. It's definitely gonna be a cult classic in a few decades!
I think one of the biggest critiques is actually the truest thing of life - all the character growth that was accomplished got backwheeled in the ending. We don’t like to see that because we feel we’ve wasted our time as viewers - but in life people fall back into bad patterns all the time.
Exactly, both GOT and HIMYM expertly depicted what regression looks and feels like with Jaime and Barney, but the audiences developed a burning hatred towards the showrunners for 'ruining' their characters.
To be honest, how their careers panned out was realistic. We can't expect things to go where we wanted them to go when we were dreaming about our futures. We can chose to pursue our dreams despite these challenges and hope for the best but it's not shameful to give up and chose an alternative based on your current situation. Money may not be everything but it's a heck of a lot of something.
Plus their alternatives are not really too off from their dreams.
Ted did eventually achieve his dream, but he did settle on being a teacher for a while and even when he did create his dream building, it was only achieved by destroying a iconic building for a evil bank, so not perfect.
Lily never became a artist, but she gained a career as an art consultant for the captain.
Marshall didn't become a environmental lawyer but he did change the world through the judicial system.
I feel like your take on the gang's careers is quite... shallow. Marshall eventually became a judge, because he wanted to make positive changes and be more influential in that. Ted and the arcadia - he himself was not totally on board with the building being torn down, but the show also highlighted that it was an old building in terrible shape. Lilly was never passionate about being a kindergarden teacher, but that was her only option at the time. We shouldn't forget that the show takes place JUST after 2008. Jobs were hard to come by and none of them had a lot of options.
To be fair I do think How I Met Your Mother handled career stuff in a semi realistic way sometimes you have to take the right now job and not spend your whole life waiting for your dream job. Otherwise you’ll just stay home and not where pants lol. There were moments in the earlier seasons where Lily did like her teaching job it wasent till she had a kid that she found it more of the same but that can happen.
I like Zoe because she’s Emma on Once Upon a time but Ted did the right thing with the building it was going to be condemned.
The show had a problems in the last season but never about jobs and careers
I love how they described time passing with everyone’s growth in their personal or professional lives and Ted going from mid-20s to mid-30s 😂😂😂
They don't say adulthood is about giving up, if anything it’s the opposite, they all get their dream jobs in the end, except Lily but she still pursues art in whatever form she can. They have set backs, (though Ted only cared about the Arcadian when Zoey did, otherwise its just an old building to him), but they persevere, that’s not giving up. Robin’s travelling did hurt her marriage, but losing her friendships was more to do with the group including two exes with one she’s in love with.
Good balanced video overall. But I disagree with your take on Ted tearing down the Arcadian. Cities constantly evolve and Zoey was trying to sabotage Ted’s dream of adding to the NYC skyline just to save an old building that had become dilapidated. Zoey was AWFUL. And Ted doesn’t suffer from “main character syndrome.” He’s literally the main character of the show lol
A show about friends being somewhat offensive to each other isn’t “toxic” … it’s realistic, especially for its time period. Enjoy the FICTIONAL characters or don’t, but stop treating them like they’re subpar role models, because they aren’t trying to be.
It is honestly impressive that How I Met Your Mother managed to built such a big audience when the episode with Natalie (ie. woman Ted dumped on her birth - twice) is the third episode of the show. Different times.
I disagree with many points here.
No. 2, "Adulthood means giving up." I really don't think that's what the show was saying, and I actually appreciated what it did with the characters' ever-changing careers. It is still, to date, the most realistic portrayal of the mess one's job life can be. Your dream job turning out to be less than ideal; your job and your ideals not matching; your career taking many twists and turns until you land in a stable position you're satisfied with; having to choose between the money you need, and the money-less job you dream of. It's not so much about "adulthood = giving up," that was never the point of the show in my opinion. It's more about, "life is messy." You can draw up as many plans as you want but things will rarely go your way. Like Marshall, your motivation may change over time, or the way to achieve it may change, or the conditions might not be optimal for you. In the end, he still got to achieve his dream, only in a different way (being a judge rather than a lawyer). As someone who struggles with career stuff, this is actually comforting to see one show that's not telling me "dreams always come true! life's never complicated!"
Everything about fate: I do agree that most of the time, "fate" is a convenient tool for Ted to use and abuse in order to justify what he does, but in the end, I don't believe the point of the show was that you had to sit and wait until perfection fell into your lap. The show made it clear that it was all about timing, and how sometimes timing's a bitch but sometimes it's right. If Ted had met Tracy just a little bit sooner, it wouldn't have worked, because there were so many things he needed to live and to change about himself. He needed to stop being an asshole, to learn that relationships need work, to let go of his obsession with Robin, to stop wallowing in self-pity, etc.
"People outside of your friend group don't matter" : that one leaves me puzzled, because while the main group do have their problems (as one episode with Kevin pointed out), they're not entirely isolated. The characters actually have more friends and relations outside of their group than shows like Friends! We meet friends (Ranjit, Claudia and Stuart, Carl the bartender, Wendy the waitress, Billy Zabka), several colleagues that recur throughout the show, family that appear several times and have minor story arcs (Mickey, Loretta, Jerry, James, Marvin, Judy). Most of the boyfriends and girlfriends are really well-integrated into the group, they're included in group stuff (Kevin, Victoria, Nora, Quinn, Zoey, etc. all come to mind); and when a girlfriend/boyfriend doesn't "click" with the group it's usually a sign of a bigger problem going on (I'm thinking of Stella, she didn't have a problem with the group per se but she and Ted were totally out of sync and didn't realize it until way too late).
So yeah, they have moments when they can be a pretty toxic group but I don't think the message was ever that your friend group should be exclusive. It's true that Tracy died, but on the other hand Robin too did become alienated from the friend group, and to be honest Ted didn't seem that heart-broken about it (Lily was, but the others seemed fine).

Agree. I’d also add it’s less about “giving up” than “letting go” (of childish dreams) and taking advantage of the opportunities life presents. As you noted it’s a mature and realistic portrayal.
I feel like Marshall’s arc pretty clearly illustrates that your dreams aren’t necessarily as fulfilling as you thought and often times the career you always dreamed of is one you never thought of. And also I think the show illustrates that some careers like Robin’s and Ted’s *are* very competitive and DO require sacrifice and compromise. And juxtaposes that with working a job to provide a certain lifestyle and allowing your fulfillment to come from your family, friends and hobbies like Lily and Barney
Personally I find the whole messaging around “you get fulfillment through your job” to be way more toxic. If you have the skills, opportunity and work ethic to do something you love that’s great, but it’s not realistic for everyone. (And frankly it’s an extremely privileged outlook.) Sometimes a job is simply a job and people shouldn’t be made to feel guilty or like a failure because they aren’t working their ‘dream job’

I disagree with the part about Ted being passive with his love life. A partner is not a job that you desperate try to find. And luck also is very important.
Besides, even though he absolutely did have a lot of passive and lazy moments, there were plenty of episodes where he was the total opposite, actively forcing himself into situations where a romantic outcome might occur: he joined a dating site, he tried to sign up for an arranged marriage, and he was constantly injecting himself in the middle whenever a woman so much as caught his eye for 2 seconds. Sometimes Ted really did the most lol
I think it wasn't actually about Ted being passive in finding a partner, as much as it was about him being passive in trying to make his relationships work. Ted wants his partner to change for him to basically fit his mold of "the one", but quickly decides to call it quits the very moment he himself is requested to make some changes. Ted's problem is that he isn't really interested in the process of getting somewhere in his relationship, he wants his partner to change their mind out of nowhere and hand everything he wants to him on a silver platter, without giving anything back. This is where Ted is being passive. Like him "waiting for a woman to just show up and be "the one" is basically him wanting the changes and adjustments to be one-sided.
Yeah god forbid Marshall gets a job as a lawyer amd provides for his children and irresponsible wife and ue rightfully chastised Barney for picking a building that looked like a dinosaur wearing a cowboy hat which the city of New York would have never allowed.
Lily is the worst with her philosophy regarding coaching children's basketball, I know it's youth rec league but c'mon that was b.s.
I've always thought that anyone other than NPH as Barney would've made the show almost unwatchable. Just no way you can pull off a lot of that bullshit without someone as charismatic. Him, Alyson, and Jason were able to pull off wild tone changes that gave silly parts enough heft to not be totally wacky and the more serious stuff the weight it deserved. There's a reason Alyson has been on multiple long time, successful series, why Jason has done well in movies, and why NPH is NPH.
Ted pretended the story was about their mother, to his kids because he wanted to tell them, he wanted to date Robyn. We all felt manipulated at the end because he was manipulating his kids.
How I met your mother is really bad about consent too, they are tons of jokes about getting with really drunk women…
I kinda have to disagree. Wait, not disagree, but let’s put it this way, every time the show tried giving us a “wide-eyed, over the top, the universe is playing a part in finding the right one”message through Ted or even Marshall at times, it was always challenged by Robin, Barney and even Lily to a certain point. There is a healthy balance of both sides, imho. And that is why I have always thought HIMYM is/was/always will be a better show than Friends. To further elaborate, let’s take a look at friendship. How many of us can actually say that we are always hanging out with friends everyday or involved in their love lives or careers. Both shows endorsed that, but at the end HIMYM shows a more realistic side of things, you can’t always be hanging out with friends, you can’t always make it to every event, you can’t always agree with them, you will at one point start prioritizing yourself even though it means you need to be away from your friends.
There are definitely many toxic traits in each character of the show, and that is exactly why as much as we like them we also are annoyed by them when they make mistakes or don’t own up to it. The show is much more realistic than people give it credit for. With each viewing and as I get older some episodes hit the spot, especially the episodes when each character is lonely despite having friends at arms length. I’m sure we’ve all felt that at some point or another.
I know the whole story was premeditated very early on, but this show was insanely mentally and emotionally exhausting. It certainly didn’t help when the ending was major slap in the face.
Jim and Pam and Ross and Rachel were not that important. They were simply hooks to keep the audience hooked on the show. The writers probably did not care how toxic those relationships were.
The ending ruined the show for me so much. I can't ever rewatch it. That never happened to me with another show and some of them had really bad endings.

Almost ruined it? I rewatch community, parks and rec, the good place, it's always sunny ( even tho its still active) but I don't rewatch HIMYM cause I can't watch the last 3-4 seasons. It is just bad, speacially the last season of course, unwatchable.

I actually liked HIMYM until I saw the ending. I just didn't vibe with the Ted/Robin thing at all. Because with it the story just looks more incomplete than it was without it. We all know that the problems Ted and Robin faced earlier when they were dating won't magically go away just because the narration ended. Sure, Ted got his kids and marriage, but he's still gonna dislike Robin's down-to-earth lifestyle, her love of dogs etc. Even though Ted and Robin were planned as the endgame since day 1, they make like no sense.
the giving up point, i liked that aspect of the show. that’s reality. not everything can work out when it comes to these things. you have to make hard decisions in life. sacrifice something for your family. or lose out on friends for your career. i’m glad that they went through these paths with the characters.

loving the How I Met Your Father love!! the show did start a little rough, but this is really common for sitcoms -- HIMYM itself wasn't best at its first season, and another very well known example is The Office. but HIMYF's second season is really great so far!

I find it so annoying when people criticise character traits and flaws. They point out Ted's and Barny's misogynism and other issues all through out the stories, and THEY LEARN LESSSIONS. Not everyone is perfect and everyone has their flaws and this show shows that and fixes their character. I hate how everyone has to be so "morally correct" and aren't aloud to learn anything. That's why so many modern shows feel so shallow now.
Let's be real, there was no problematic misogyny from Barney, that's just Buzzfeed being Buzzfeed.
Why do you guys have to hate on ted? Don't be a hater. Ted is not worse than barney grow up, barney did way worse. What you call emotional abuse I call trying and failing at finding true love, you just don't get that. You shouldn't knock the universe, there are cosmic forces we can't control. It's not creepy behavior to want to find love. Ted only acted like barney because he was wallowing in self pity, same way he did when he was a woo girl. How I met your mother had a gay black guy played by Wayne Brady? How did you not remember that? Way to drop the ball the take, also you can't be angry at someone for their preferences, it's not right. People are always going to have choices for one over the other, that's just life, you should shame people for not being open to date outside their preferences.

Watching back the series I have only one thing to say - I Hate Ted! He's selfish, and throght out the series he even don't have a character arch... What's the point with this kind of character?!

You guys should do a take on HIMYF. The first season was a bit rocky but I think the quality started picking up a lot more during season 2.
HIMYM benefited from having more episodes each season so they were able to breath more and understand the characters more. IMO, HIMYF has a shorter season so it’s a more time consuming process.

I think 'it's okay to give up' is more 'it's okay to accept that where you thought you'd be isn't where you ended up and it doesn't have to be all bad.' It's realistic, and life takes you in crazy directions. It's comforting to see that play out and resolved on screen too, and even if things weren't EXACTLY how they should be, they did what they could with where life took them.
Realizing that the career you thought was right for you isn't, or it not panning out, does not mean you've denounced your morals and you REALLY do HAVE to pay rent/mortgages.

If the show continues to be popular and gain new viewers, maybe it isn't as "problematic" or "toxic" as you claim.
While the new series may have checked boxes on the diversity checklist, the show was canceled because the characters didn't feel like they were real friends and it didn't really have anything new to say. Say what you will about "HIMYM," it knew how to create a mythology that felt lived in and organic. One can't say the same thing of its companion series.
"How I Met Your Mother" is the show that Bays and Thomas wanted to make. That is their prerogative. And if you think it missed the mark in some areas, you are more than welcome to make your own show.

I don't like how all 5 of them think they are main characters and it shows so much! They treat everyone else like side characters.
I like the point about Barney as it's frustrating that he got away with so many despicable, sexist things and even gets cheered on by some of the other characters and loved by fans. Also, even if the show didn't frame his actions as great, it doesn't mean that it did enough to call him out, have him face consequences and make a lasting change as playing it all off as jokes when he's treating women like that isn't funny and makes it seem like misogyny isn't a big deal (especially with all the crappy things that Ted got away with too).
Ted was an unreliable narrator who needed Barney to look bad next to him. The audience is free to imagine that Barney didn't do or get away with those misogynistic things, but Ted lied to look better. The audience is seeing only the viewpoint of a sexist man.
@@cbushin I guess that makes sense about Ted trying to make himself look better but he doesn't come off great and I don't think that everything's exaggerated so Barney was probably still pretty awful.

As long as you avoid the last few episodes, the series is pretty brilliant overall.
However, the ending really undermines a lot of the character development of the entire series (which is why I don't have a problem the the "problematic" behaviors of Barney and Ted). Perhaps if the ending happened only a few seasons in - but after 9 seasons, the ending didn't fit anymore - and thus the ending, ironically, felt like a rush job to fit into something that was pre-determined. If Tracy had lived and was Ted's happy ending - it would have made more sense - although it would have been the more predictable ending. To me, the show is about Ted getting over Robin, finally letting go, in order to be ready for the Mother. Not, I settled for your mother but now she's dead, I can go after Robin again.
11:47 this should’ve happened! Screw the Robin/Ted stuff, Bays and Thomas should’ve killed that relationship for good in season 2. Maybe not spend so much time on the wedding and end the show with the same scene that sees Tracy and Ted under the yellow umbrella
It's understandable why "How I Met Your Father," would try to distance itself from the HIMYM. Anyone who watched the original faithfully for eight seasons, invested in the characters, couples, and storylines watched it all destroyed in the final few minutes of the finale. They wrote themselves into a corner by deciding the ending in season two and by doing so, all of the incredible characters and story development (Barney and Robin, mostly) never had a real chance. The writers knew they were setting up their audience for a fall and they deserve all of the backlash, criticism, and notoriety of not just a bad series finale but a finale that ruined an entire series.
For the show who had 9 season how i met your mother was good for the most part. Now only problem is that characters are not original :
Ted is like Ross from the friends
Barney is like combination of Harry and Dan from night court
Lily and Marshall are like Turk and Carla from scrubs.
Robin is sorta original but she least funny character from show.
Well....as much as this sucks, sometimes following 'dreams' has to take a back seat to making money needed to survive.
I maintain that Barney would have been an absolutely horrendous character to spend time with, and wouldn't be anywhere near as likeable, if he had been played by anyone other than NPH.

Then maybe they have an amicable divorce - then Ted and Robin get back together years after. Fans would've been more on board with that, not just killing poor Tracy.

How I Met Your Father is a good series and it has funny moments, but it lacks the best aspects of comedy that HIMYM has. I think how I met your Father is too sanitized and politically correct. Sometimes bad behavior and things we know are bad are funny. It doesn’t mean we condone the bad behavior in real life. I still like the new series though.
Can't have that "misogyny." Any show that tries to remove what activists call misogyny or make an anti-misogyny theme is destined to fail. Even if the network takes a loss to prop it up.
I think these videos are really fantastic, but I do think it’s a bit strange to say “Ted has main character syndrome” rather than phrase it as “The writers form fit the whole story around him and his needs” seeing as he actually is the main character of a story I’m not a real person
Problem with this kind of show is it has a lot of viewers who need to be invested in the characters and their story.
They're sitcoms. You should be watching these for the jokes and nothing more.

I loved How I Met Your Mother, save for Ted. I HATED Ted. I hated him so much.
I know this is a controversial take but I actually liked the ending- don’t get me wrong, it does problematically reinforce Ted’s delusions about fate and his self importance but sitcoms have a habit of embracing extreme monogamy at the expense of a more nuanced view of human relationships so I was expecting the ending to be one of those “and they lived happily ever after forever” things. It was a breath of fresh air when he managed to both have a fulfilling relationship with the mother and also found his way back to Robin later in their lives when they were more compatible. It was a unique take for an otherwise somewhat socially conservative show

Maybe then, but nowadays many public schools are so desperate for teachers they'll take anyone with a Bachelors and pay off a percentage of your student loans.
I like How I Met Your Father. However, while some of the corrections they made are really good, I do believe they went a bit too far with the whole "none of the characters have actual flaws".
I mean, even physically, while they did cast people from different ethnicities, most of them, especially the women, could be models - and they all have these insane jobs ! None of these feel as relatable as, let's say, Marshall and Lily - Robin who was portrayed as really hot and successful in HIMYM would be average in the HIMYF girl group.
Plus, racism and sexism did not disappear since 2009 : I mean, sure, you can't put a character as outrageous as Barney on-screen again, but there are still plenty of ways to be funny while mentioning this topic, like with a "cliché feminist guy" for instance...Or a new version of Ted, but who would at least be put back into his place somehow.
