ABOUT NEW AMSTERDAM
After a tumultuous year in which the leadership of New Amsterdam underwent dramatic change, the idealistic and beloved Max Goodwin is back at the helm.
As Max takes back the reins at New York City's busiest public hospital, he must first address his own personal life, which was thrown into uncertainty at the conclusion of Season 4. Max and the team forge ahead with optimism and a renewed commitment to their own lives - reaching for more joy and forging deeper connections with the people they love.
Dr. Bloom continues to navigate her own personal journey, including a complicated relationship with her estranged sister, Vanessa. Dr. Frome tackles the mess he has made of his marriage to Martin. Dr. Reynolds continues to sort out the relationship with his long-lost father, Horace. And finally, Dr. Elizabeth Wilder, who joined the staff last year, continues to build on her firm foundation as a critical member of the New Amsterdam team and a vital friend and confidante.

Been a long time since I’ve seen a show spend their final season completely rewriting all character development and completely vilifying a character simply because the actress did not want to return
I have a feeling it was around the time when Helen needed to cover open for that other lady’s mistake
Helen deserved better
I have a hard time believing Helen would do something like this knowing who she was and if we put that aside and believe it then that's the definition of a soul mate someone that put u above all of what they are and believe
Helen saved Max's life at least twice before..the chemical spill and when he fell out on the pier. Helen guided Georgia in getting a pathway to his breathing...and in my mind..he and Luna went to London when left NA..to be with Helen.
I think Ryan Eggold is a phenomenal actor. It really was so easy to believe that he really loved Dr. Sharpe.
I’ve never seen a show spend their saving grace LAST SEASON solely on vilifying a character and undercutting who she was out of anger for the actress leaving instead of just spending it ending it the way it deserves. This last season has been them writing with HATE and it’s been a terrible season and they should be ashamed of themselves

I agree. What really made me upset when Max just got over Helen so quick. We waited how many seasons for them to finally be together and they destroyed her character. They knew she didn’t want to return, why not end the show last season with them together in London
@@Shika4eva understood. I haven't seen the episode but I can totally agree. They either turn characters to villains or they just kill them off with no remorse. When an actor decides to leave for w.e reason. I'm sad this is what happened here

I stopped watching this when Helen was no longer on the show it became dumb af and he just jumped in a relationship with the other lady i can't believe it they're relationship looks unrealistic the storyline each became all over the place so I just end it was the dumbest show ever
All the good couples always get ruined like we all knew they had so much chemistry since season 1 why didn't they put them in sooner like in the beginning of season 3 they always wait until the end of the show I'm disappointed she left this show isn't good without her 💔😕
They should have end this series by Season 3. That will be the perfect number of seasons and episodes to conclude all main characters' stories in a wholesome manner.
All throughout the series, I thought the writers wrote creatively, but in the end they dropped the ball on this beautiful character of Dr. Helen Sharpe. The one consolation that the Sharpwin fans have is that we saw the love of Max and Helen blossom right before our eyes, and for some strange reason, it resonated beyond a mere tv show, but rather into the hearts and minds of many many viewers lives. Freema and Ryan brought those characters to life, perhaps in ways that they themselves cannot fully comprehend. For them, it's simply a character, but you can't say in one breath that the stories touch on real life experiences, and in the next breath say, they're fictional. Some of these relationships resonate so profoundly with people. AND, although the creativity of the writers did not last to the end of NA because they failed to understand that people are what make 'ships' work or not work, but happy endings do exist in life, and we as human beings need to begin to embrace them again. Hollywood writer's tend to promote more unsuccessful and even, at times, unhealthy relationships, and quite frankly, we the viewing public are getting tired of it. Maybe, we need new writers, creative story lines that people in our society long to embrace.
Helen and Max would have survived Helen's wedding day insecurities had Max simply got on the plane to confront what was really going on with his fiance. BUT, once again, the writer's threw Max into his grief stricken state of mind, and into the arms of another woman. Absolutely unbelievable on so many levels.
I bought the New Amsterdam Series; Seasons 1 thru 4. For me, Season 5 does not exist. Most of us can creatively write our own ending to the beautiful love story of Max and Helen Goodwin. That's my ending, and I'm sticking to it.
REMEMBER: HAPPY ENDINGS DO EXIST, even when the odds are against you. 🕊❤️🕊

This is the first time I've seen a drama that destroys the former main character because it doesn't return to the old scenes used to badmouth the main players with unfinished problems, there are still many questions from their loyal fans, especially Sharpwin, which ends in their anger because their character is made like vilian lethal drugs; it's clear from the previous season why he did that ...to save his friends, colleagues and they ended up getting engaged, why did it end like this.. it's crazy, the writer ran out of ideas whether this method was like revenge or couldn't it be more honorable, even though there were many moments on s4 to be able to make helen unable to play in NA preferring a painful ending loyal fans .. very unfortunate and embarrassing and ended the show being canceled by NBC

She saved Max's life by bringing Dr. Castro to DAM, whom, those who were watching since the beginning know that, was the one in charge of selecting the patients to be Included in the trial. Helen should have just left Max dying back then. The man has no gratitude and hasn't learned anything with the past in this 5th S. Keep putting the hospital before his family. Poor Georgia, poor Helen and poor Luna...We'd be better off without this season at all...
Max had little to no growth when it came to the hospital. Georgia knew it, she was pregnant with their first child and Max still picked the hospital most times. Also he's so dense this season: Omg, Helen loved me?

I think you're right. They (the writers) did a disservice to themselves by portraying the character of Helen in a negative light, and they did a disservice to the character of Max. Freema and Ryan portrayed the love of those two characters so well, that to end the season any other way outside of them getting married and remaining in London was/is not believable in realtime. Helen and Max had a love based on a mutual respect for each other professionally and personally. So, to have Max falling so quickly for someone else is just not believable. If this was a realtime relationship, most would believe that Helen sensed something in Max, that he would not be fully committed to her, and decided to not go through with the wedding.
I have never watched a single episode of New Amsterdam, BUT, I have enjoyed watching the wonderful fan YT videos. They are amazing, and some of the song choices fit the two characters so well. At the end of the day, I did enjoy the credible chemistry between Max and Helen, beautifully portrayed by Ryan and Freema. I wish them well in all their future endeavors.🕊❤️🕊
Even with all of these ''bad'' scripts on NEW AMSTERDAM 5, one thing is 100% there: YOU CANNOT KILL DR HELEN. You even made one season out of her so this is HOW GREAT THE CHARACTER WAS. The best!!
She saved Max twice, she saved Luna, she saved Lauren, she made all things mattered come to a close.
Many commenters here are disappointed with the changes the screenwriters had made on Helen's characterization. You know what would have happened after they told Max the reason Helen did that for love. The next scene should be Max becomes emotional and runs out of the room and looks for Helen to confront her. This will be the first time he actually talks to Helen face-to-face, and then the screenwriters can choose what to write then. It isn't Max's nature to sit there and asks his GF the "What she would do" hypothetical scenario.
Anyways, there is so much inconsistency in the writing.

NBC thanks for canceling this before it went ever more downhill. Just save this season locked where nobody would be able to watch it...save people's time.

NBC did not cancel the show. It was set to be 5 seasons only.
However, I wish this show would end at season 3 with better plotline and character development. Most TV shows that have more than 3 seasons are often ended up with degraded storyline and main actors/actresses leaving in the middle of somewhere.

Crash is right! I did not watch S5, but the little info that I read, that last Season was a total train wreck; no survivors!
This was the greatest cast along with medical drama Ryan Eggold did an amazing job in his role we miss them ❤

This is why I stopped watching New Amsterdam... these writers did Helen's character so wrong. I couldn't anymore. So glad the show ended. ✌🏾

The show really devolved from a drama about the day to day workings of a hospital, into a morass of fluid morals, dubious ethics, unprofessional conduct and convoluted personal philosophies. Clearly, clearly the writers and producers were pushing their personal agendas on its viewers.
Most assuredly! They tackled everything on their agenda, and look how it all turned out. Why am I surprised?
