You gotta love a cabin boat on a blustery day and on this day we had some decent wind coming off the land and whipping across the water throwing up some chop and lots of spray.
But the Regal was both easy and comfortable to drive but kept us dry and comfortable on what was a super fun day out on one of the highest quality sports cruisers available on the market today!

Can you comment on the wave height when you were outside the harbour on the windy day? Very interested in the Regal’s rough water handling characteristics.

Yep.. on the day we had ocean swell coming in the heads which was rolling and around 1-2m with a wide enough wave period to not bother us. During the test a stiff NW wind blew in from the land, across the harbour and out to sea which whipped up some wind chip and short sharp waves. We trimmed down and pointed the bow into the waves and drove at around 18kts into this. I'd say the wind strength was around 25-28kts from memory and that kicked a lot of spray over the boat. I'd be happy driving this boat offshore in moderate upwind conditions and downwind i would go out conditions a bit stronger as you have plenty of power to put the boat where you want it. At all times that boat felt solid and nothing creaking or making me concerned.

For that $$$ , I would choose a Nimbus T11 with all the options and more.....and have a year around boat and more storage.
Each to their own as both Nimbus and Regal are built to the same high standard. I can see some families with kids maybe preferring the Regal because of the ability to watch the kids a bit more and climate controlled space and others preferring the Nimbus because of the openness so whatever floats your boat. The important thing is that everyone keeps buying boats and having fun! Thanks for the feedback

Love the test drive. You do an amazing job of giving a virtual sea trial experience. Thanks. I am curious about your views on 350s vs. 425s. I know the top end is higher on 425s but the 350s seem quicker out of the gate. How should I be thinking about one vs. the other. Thanks again for your great work on these test drives and walkthroughs.
G'day Kirk, thanks for the feedback i appreciate that. I have not personally tested the 425's yet and will not get a chance until i drive the new Capelli 40 and 44 in the new year (video coming soon).
I think you should focus your attention on power to weight ratio. The physical weight of the 425s is a lot more than the 350s and on a boat like the Regal it would shift your CG (Center of gravity) aft. This may raise the bow requiring more aggressive trim tab and also affect your props ability to find clean water without correct engine trim.
I love driving with the biggest HP i can find but sometimes there is a limit to the actual benefit you receive. You can test this by getting a few blokes to stand on the transom of a boat fitted with 350's (at rest! dont drive with them on the transom!) and see how she sits in the water. If she's looking a little arse heavy then perhaps the 425's are overkill. We already know the boat will run at 40kts witht he 350's so there is no issue with performance which is why i'm saying you should focus your attention on the CG.

@@BoatLife_DansBoatLife Boatlife the Volvo 350s are 996 lbs each. the 430 hp ones are only 972 lbs each. So the big blocks are lighter and 130 hp more each for a total of 260 hp more and 50 lbs. lighter total which should make this a 55 mph or more boat with none of the disadvantages you speak of and the numbers are directly from Volvos engine spec PDFs. If you think this boat is fast then you will be amazed when you test one with big block power.
