Dunnottar Castle is situated just south of Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire and is a bucket list location for my tourists and photographers.

We just went to Scotland last October from North Carolina. We explored as many old castles as we could, and they all took my breath away. Having nothing so ancient or historic in America I really was in awe. We wanted to go to this Castle but just didn't have time ( so many castles in Scotland!) Thank you for taking me there! I'm hoping to go back to this beautiful land soon.
So lovely to hear that you enjoyed your trip here last year. There certainly is a lot of castles and historic places to visit here. I still have several to see myself. Such a shame that you ran out of time to see Dunnottar but fingers crossed you'll be back and can see it next time. :)

I'v been to Dunnottar Castles twice while visiting family in Aberdeenshier. It is amazing ! If you ever go, be prepared for a hike and a chilly wind ! My Mom wished she had dressed warmer.
Just did it yesterday under blue sky. Amazing place. Give me a castle to explore, I’m happy.
My 29th Great grandfather was marbhachair Chamius who was the Marischal of scotland and the owner of this castle back in the early 1000s, his son was Robert chatti and his son was Warin de keith who was the Knight Marischal of scotland, the castle was in the family from Marbhachair all the way to William keith and that 21 generations which is absolutely Crazy!
What fasinates me about these old castles and buildings is somebody has to build them, it must have taken years and done without modern day tools, thanks Kim for the history lesson.....I enjoyed your tour too......thank you...
Me too Des! It's insane and all these buildings that were made by hand withstand the test of time, whereas modern day buildings don't.

Wonderful vlog KIm. Thank you for bringing the castle to life for me. Four generations of my ancestors were born, lived and died in Dunnottar Castle. My Scottish roots are very deep in that land confirmed by both genealogy and DNA. I will never be able to visit Scotland in person and your video thankfully brings me closer to it. Wonderfully done. I’m from Stonehaven and see this on a regular basis and have to say I have never been in the castle. But it’s great fun riding along the cliff edge on the mtb

I so very much appreciated this video, Kim. I was lucky enough to visit Dunnottar way back in 1995. Didn't have a camera in my phone in those days haha so only a few pictures and fading memories. This brought so much back and I really enjoyed it. Seems like a lot of good work has been done on the place since I was there, but maybe my memory's not that good. A beautiful place I hope to see again one of these days. Thank you.

Please check out some of the castles that once belong to the Clan McDougal. On my mother's side my Great grand father was a McDougal. I love knowing, that as a mutt I have Scottish blood line. Shalom Alecheim.

A small suggestion: hovering over the plaques and signs would be appreciated. I enjoyed reading the one on ghostly encounters and would've liked to have read the others as well, including the sign on the chair, for example. Just a wee suggestion.

Fantastic video Kim, it has to be one of the best castles I've ever seen in Scotland and the views are epic. Definitely on my bucket list to visit. Think the kitchen area needs a new worktop though haha. Id love to photograph this one with a light sea mist rolling over the rock and castle. Cracking as ever Kim, well done that lass :-)

It's good to get the feel of an ancient building, and to use your imagination. It must have been the height of luxury in it's time, for people who had to be rather more hardy than us fortunate 21st c. folk. I like your little observation about the consolation of the sound of the sea for the unfortunates in the thief's hole. What songs might it have sung for them! The fascinating patterns of lichens on the stone were worthy of your attention. With my preoccupation with the beauty of trees, I find the various lichens and mosses fascinating, also the large fungi which form on the trunks. Lots of opportunity for close up shots, if you're into that kind of thing! Thanks for taking us on your visit.

Unfortunately I didn't have it to myself (it was actually surprisingly busy for the time of year). That's great that youtube is allowing you to travel all round Scotland in one day. Hope you make it back in the near future.

Hi Kim i really enjoyed this trip with you around the castle. Like yourself I love to visit old buildings and imagine how it must have been all those years ago ! If only walls could talk to tell us all that went on in such places ? The room with the windows and ceiling looked great and the views were amazing !
We do not have so many castles here in Yorkshire as there are in Scotland but we have some wonderful old abbeys :D

The cave that you spoke of with the metal gate at the other side...years ago my husband remembers that you used to be able to walk through there and gain access to the beach on the other side. Apparently, since the gate has been put in place, there is no longer access to that area. Such a shame. Enjoyed your video. We visited again just last spring...stunning place isn't it? :)

I just want to say thank you for the tour inside one of the homes my ancestors lived in. My ancestor was the Marshall to the king and then took over the castle for a time. Yes, we were then over taken; however we did settle there for a couple decades. #KeithCastle I have always wanted to come visit it. It seems it will never happen for me...so thank you so very much. It's so nice to be able to let you see this castle. I hope that you are able to come and visit it in person one day to see it for yourself but if not, it's lovely that I was able to allow you to see and experience it.

Lovely video! Thanks for bringing us. I just discovered this castle on CZcams and would love to visit, so this was perfect. Sadly, in it's later life, that long barrel vaulted room with a window in the end became a prison. I forget why, but men and women were stuffed in there, trapped in filth and many died. History is so long in Britain that the same sites can witness the sublime in one century and degradation in another. During the English civil war Dunnottar protected the honors of Scotland (crown, scepter and sword.) Cromwell wanted to destroy them and besieged the castle, but they were lowered down the cliffs and taken up the coast, where they were buried under the floor of a church. You clever Scots!
Covenanters, the presbyterian adherents of the National Covenant who defied the imposition of episcopacy on the Scottish church, were persecuted, even killed, and imprisoned in disgusting conditions like you suggest. DIsappointed that Kim did not cover this important part of Scotland's history.
@@southwoodside The alacrity with which sects of the faith in Jesus Christ have discriminated against, imprisoned, starved, tortured and executed each other is the reason for my skepticism. My faith didn't survive learning about the 30 years war, I'm afraid. Nonetheless, I think the answers to all our puzzlements can be found in history, if only we can be open minded enough to see ourselves in the follies of the past.

Perhaps in the future, you could add facts from the signs or a close up of them that we can read?

I saw the sign you mention as I was leaving,. I went into the castle from the back rather than the front door so missed it on the way in. Todays video (about Elgin Cathedral) is more fact based with signs etc included. Lovely to hear that you enjoyed Dunnottar too! It certainly is a stunning castle to visit :)

According to my DNA test, the Earls of Dunnottar Castle were my ancestors. Regardless of if that's true or not, this was such a pleasure to watch. Thank you! ❤️❤️

This was fantastic. Thank you! What the heck is a "Drawing Room"? What did they do in drawing rooms. Ive always heard that term. Is it the equivalent of todays "family room"?
According to google it is - a room in a large private house in which guests can be received and entertained. I guess it's like a living room but not as private

I was trying to picture how to say "Dunnottar" with a Scottish accent and it wasn't as exciting as I imagined.
My accent isn't very strong. I'm sure hearing it in a strong male Scottish accent would sound pretty cool!

Hard to believe how little you discovered about the castle. No mention of the Honours of Scotland or Covenanters. Some decent shots of it but a couple of misinterpretations and no real mention of the defences or the fact that they carved away the causeway to the rock so it was harder to approach. Those steps outside the castle leading down to the front door are relatively new. Back in the 60s and 70s it was a somewhat dangerous path, narrow and unpaved, witha precipitous drop on either side, that led there,. The well within the castle is fresh water despite the castle being on a rock formation in the sea. I think you will find that every major castle that was built in the period Dunnottar was will have everything they need within the walls otherwise they could not withstand siege.

By the way, you mention this was used as a military fortress beginning in 1651. Do you happen to know if it was used by the forces supporting Charles II or Cromwell? I would assume, from the geographical location, that it would have been in support of the royalists but the inscription in the drawing room seems to cover the years from the roundhead takeover until the restoration. Did they give that information?
Really sorry but I don't know the answer to this. It would certainly be an interesting thing to find out though!

The siege you mentioned was... Cromwell...this castle was the only one still holding out against the English army.! With only 69 men...
The Scottish crown jewels we're in hiding there.. but we're sneaked away by a maid..
