Hello guys, launch is not even possible in D. The entine torque will be reduced after a certain bouncing time due to missuse. This timer has even been reduced in the latest modells due to too many people destroying their clutch thinking they are doing a launch while in reality they are just driving against the brakes. Launch is only possible in S or M while ESP / ASR is turned off and the gearbox temperature is high enough (next to some other minor conditions) Read the manual! From a DCT engineer

Uh no, this is wrong beyond belief; the DSG does not have dynamic ratios. What is going on is that the active exhaust system likely has the flap closed vs open (sport == open, normal == closed) and boost is likely lowered too; this would explain the difference in noise. The TCM once launched will also likely be less aggressive, optimizing shift-points for fuel economy and stability; some vehicles will perform no-lift shifts effectively in sport modes and non-sport mode they'll cut the ignition briefly for a less aggressive shift. I don't own a Golf R, but I have a Veloster N and it's a very different animal between it's sport mode and the normal mode; the tech is pretty much similar though, both dual-clutch gearboxes, both hot hatches, both turbocharged vehicles, both have active exhausts. One has a more usable interface, the other doesn't and one has an eLSD and the other has AWD with a fancy rear-diff.
DSG´s are pretty good transmissions, the problem is that VW decided to market them as conventional autos with idle creep that just wont work well on a automated manual transmission. These things are not unreliable as they come, they are because of stupid design decisions.
