The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict seems to have come to an end. Faced with Armenia's weakness and isolation, Azerbaijan has seized Nagorno-Karabakh in a lightning mission that has led to the mass exodus of more than 100,000 ethnic Armenians from the territory to Armenia, in what many already claim is another ethnic cleansing in the post-Soviet space.
However, tensions are far from leaving the South #Caucasus. Russia, Turkey and Iran have strong interests in the region. Moreover, the attacks suffered by Israel at the hands of Hamas may lead the Jewish state to try to harm Iran in the region.
What interests are at stake in the South Caucasus? How has Azerbaijan finally gained power over Nagorno-Karabakh? Will this be the definitive end of the conflict between #Armenia and #Azerbaijan?

If the Azerbaijani goverment was so interested in making a peace treaty with Armenia why have they pulled out of EU-mediated peace talks? Why are they occupying a significant portion of the Armenian territory that they show no intentions of returning? Why are they demanding the return of their enclaves inside Armenian territory but not offering to do the same to the larger Armenian ones inside their territory? Or withholding several POW's from the 2020 war? I don't think you or ordinary Azerbaijanis want a new war, but your government needs a permanent conflict with the Armenians to justify their authoritarianism and the preservation of a ruling family that has taken millions of the Azerbaijani state ever since its independence. There will only ever be peace when you guys get rid of Alyev and replace it with a guy who does not think pardoning and rewarding criminals who kill Armenians in their sleep is an acceptable practice.

    Errors and omissions:
    1) The name of the place is ZanGezur, not ZanZegur
    2) Omitted fact that Azerbaijanis represent 2nd largest ethnic group in Iran, dominating the population of the northern part of Iran and thus this can be used as a leverage against Iran by the global powers
    3) Iran doesn't need a route through the Black Sea to connect with Russia. Firstly, they both share the cost of the Caspian Sea and do have a maritime trade. Secondly, they are building a railroad through Azerbaijan (North-South Corridor) and already do have a railroad connection through Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan
    4) Interests of China (for which the East-West) corridor is significant and of India (for which North-South) and Persian Gulf-Black Sea is crucial is not mentioned at all.

The last events were not only the rise of Turkey's influence in the region and the withdrawal of Russia but Russia's attempt to draw any last pieces of benefits, which is Azerbaijan's support for the war in Ukraine, because Azerbaijan is helping Russia a lot with parallel import of pretty much everything required for war in Ukraine.

Azerbaijan, the word stolen from the Persians, is an artificial creation of Soviets and the remnants of the now-defunct genocidal Ottoman empire. It never existed in the history of the region and was invented by the two first as a home for the homeless Caucasian Muslim Tatars and then only in 1936 is renamed to Azerbaijan. The name carefully and cunningly was chosen jointly by Turkish and pseudo-Turkish Azerbaijani leaders of the time so as to claim in the future this artificial Azerbaijani state in the South Caucasus as "north Azerbaijan" and Iranian provinces in the Northwest bearing the same name, the original name, as "south Azerbaijan" as part of their separatist pan-Turkic movement to divide Iran.

If you don't provide numbers it washes away as some euphemism that's hard to grasp: When Amenia took territories that were formally Azerbaijani territories (both in the Armenian enclave AND the Azerbaijani surrounding regions) there were around 800.000 refugees in total (200.000 from Armenia proper), that's a number hard to grasp for such small countries. This provoked a huge crisis and a never forgotten trauma, and these people didn't leave just because of some little discomfort, there were atrocities committed as you can imagine. So, the Armenians leaving the enclave en masse had something to do with such historical memory: there was no mercy for the Azerbaijani and they didn't expect anything else from them in return.
Another thing to remember is that Iran has a HUGE Azerbaijani population in the north, so much so that they try to downplay and deny such numbers (but people in the country know this to be true) and even deny that they have that much in common with their neighbors, when they are basically the same people. Iran playing with Armenia is an strategic counterpoint to avoid making Azerbaijan too strong and prosperous lest than Iranian Azerbaijanis have some ideas of prosperity of their own.
Also and again, and when it comes to this channel (and it's a staple of European way of seeing things in the world): when they don't like a country they are fast to remember how undemocratic and how much of a regime it is (what may be true in all honesty) when they like it, they don't even mention it and focus on other considerations or those related to the matter at hand.

Azerbaijani here. Today neither our goverment, nor our people want another war with Armenia. Aliyev and Pashinyan mentinod that they respect each others territorial integrity(86.6 km2 for Azerbaijan, 29.7 km2 for Armenia). Our nations fought 3 major and numerous small wars. When 3rd war ended in 2020, there were separatist groups in Azerbaijani areas linked to Armenia through Lachin corridor. That is the reason why Azerbaijani government demanded Zangezur corridor. Following 2023 operation separatist regime collapsed and Lachin corridor lose its value and thus Zangezur corridor too. Peace is only option for region to develop and prosper. There was no way Azerbaijan was going to accept Armenian control of the region in the long term. So a boil has been burst. I hope the Armenian nation can now refocus on building a highly successful country within its borders. I would suggest that Armenia 1. adheres to a policy of equidistance from the U.S. and Russia; 2. strengthens its relations with the EU in conjunction with Georgia; 3. seeks new ties with China and India; 4. utilizes Iran as a useful counter balance to Azerbaijan and Turkey.

I am not an expert, but there has been a cultural divergence between the exUSSR Azerbailjan, and the Iranian Azerbaijan. I am told north Azeris are pretty secular. It also seems that the south Azeris are very well integrated into Iranian culture and politics, with many post-revolution leaders being of Azeri or part-Azeri origins. The situation is somewhat similar to the cultural divergence between Turkmen, Uzbeks and Tadjiks in the ex-USSR central Asian republics, and their co-ethnics in Afghanistan.

In fact, two weeks ago, the foreign ministers of Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Armenia in Tehran signed a peace agreement between all parties, as well as Azerbaijan's access to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic through Iranian territory.
So the Zangzor Corridor project ended, as did the provocative role of Israel in creating tension for war.
Based on the UN, Iran considered Karabakh to be the territory of Azerbaijan, and in the meantime, it always insisted on not changing the geopolitical map of the region and maintaining the territorial integrity of Armenia and called it its red line.

This video lost my focus once it mentioned that Armenia and Azerbaijan are two brothers. Azerbaijan's origins trace back to the Altaic region (Mongolia), where Turkic people, such as those in Turkey, originated. In other words, both Turkey and Azerbaijan are colonizers and nationalists who share the goal of annihilating Armenians, as evidenced by the Armenian Genocide. It's crucial to note that this video doesn't adequately summarize reliable sources. Armenia is a democratic country, and similar to Georgia, democracy is considered an enemy by the Kremlin/Russia. Additionally, Azerbaijan is a dictatorship with no press freedom. It is essential to highlight the existence of Armenian phobia in Turkey and Azerbaijan. The Kremlin does not support Armenia due to its democratic nature, contrasting with the Kremlin's stance against democracies.
I also hope that the two-sided European Union can effectively prevent another invasion from Azerbaijan, considering the democratic values upheld by Armenia, in contrast to the authoritarian nature of Azerbaijan and its monarchie. This geopolitical dynamic adds another layer of complexity to the region, with potential implications for stability and peace.

      1. Azerbaijanis come from Mongolia
      2. Coca-Cola is older than Azerbaijan
      3. Armenians lived there for 10000 years))
Well, all I see is that Turkish and Azerbaijani people have no asian look, this may have happened 1000 years ago perhaps, who knows. If azeri people didn't exist 100 years ago, how come we have 10 million people in Azerbaijan and 30 million living in Iran, those people didn't spawn 100 years ago out of nowhere:)) and when it comes to claiming the fact armenian lived there for 2000 years, persians lived in the region 4000 years before armenians, 4000 years before..In fact, I would say that none of us have the right to say the Caucasus belong to us except persians..and your logic also points out that all Europe should leave their territories to Italians and Greek people, because they lived on the continent for 10000 years:))

The name of Azerbaijan was given by political party called Musavat and many political and intellectual elites in Tehran and Tabriz believed that the naming was Ottoman propoganda to detach Tabriz (capital of Iranian Azerbaijan province). They warned us few times, but in the end they changed the Iranian Azerbaijan province name to Azadistan to prevent any future claims by northern Azerbaijan.
I dont know what their intention was, maybe pan-turkist conspiracy, Turan or just being a big fan of South Azerbaijan, because this happened 100 years after russians divided Azerbaijan in half between them and persians:') Anyway, naming was so stupid choice that led to ongoing feud between Iran and Azerbaijan for decades (and still going on).

When it comes to F-16s, yes, they were present in Azerbaijan but none of them carried out a single flight during the war! Their role was purely geopolitical - to deter Russia and especially Iran from thinking to invade Azerbaijan.

Both countries are Turkic, have a common history, similar cultures, speak the same language (80% mutual inteligable similar to Dutch-German) and share many values. And that's exactly why they need to keep the conflict going. Corruption and poverty are plaguing the majority of the Azerbaijani region. Until now, the government has blamed Armenia for all its problems. If the conflict is resolved there would be no one to blame for the deteriorating conditions that regular Azeri citizens live in their day-to-day lives. Meanwhile, the nation's leader is busy with money laundering, exploiting the country's oil reserves for personal gain.

Armenia should take Nakichevan, there should be no more enclaves. This is the best option. Azerbaijan should not be allowed to control an Enclave which is a security risk to Armenia and that is practically a Turkish militarily base, the region will stabilise once Armenia takes control of Nakichevan, the 30,000 people who currently live there can relocate to Nogorno Karabakh and that will end the hostilities once and for all.

The name Azerbaijan appeared on the map in 1936 by Stalin. The formation of now Azerbaijan started in 1921 by Bolsheviks Russia and Ata Turk. It was first called Caucasus Tatarstan, The capital Baku was Russian speaking city, with majority of Russians, Armenians, Jews, and some Tatars (Azeris). The demographics completely changed during the soviet years. In 1989 when the autonomous republic of Nagorno-Karabakh under the new Gorbachov's law to have referendum to gain their independence. The newly formed Azeri army started "the Pogroms", attacked Armenian civilians in major city’s in Azerbaijan specially Baku, Gandzak -used to called Kirovabad. In Sumgait the Armenian civilians suffered the most . Some women were raped and burned alive, some thrown off the roofs of high-rise buildings. Over 500 thousand Armenian victims of the atrocities fled to Armenia and Russia. Most of them were Russian speaking, as they were forced to forget their language. It’s funny - when you meet an Armenian of any generation from Iran, Lebanon, France, or anywhere else, they speak Armenian, but most Azeri Armenians do not. People forget to realize Nagorno-Karabakh was given to be part of Azerbaijan as an Autonomous Republic by Stalin, under Soviet Union. And just like other republics, the Armenian population of NGK voted for their independence, the parliament in Nagorno-Karabakh made a formal declaration. The population at that time was more then 90% were Armenians, indigenous to the region for millennia, conquered over and over by different powers, but still attached to their mother land. In 2023 by Azerbaijani Pres Aliyev's decision - 120 000 civilians were pushed to starvation for over nine months, and forced to leave the ancestral lands, where some of their ancestral gravestones in cemeteries are millennial, now left behind, left for desecration and destruction, just like (over 10 000) "khachkars" - Armenian gravestones in Nakhijevan...as well as churches, entire cultural history... History is repeating itself. Geopolitical players have their agendas, while "people on the street" are being filled with hateful propaganda. I'm Armenian, love my country, and my Christian upbringing has given me the base - Love, Faith, Hope. Love for my heritage, Faith in humanity' even in Azerbaijan, and Hope for Peace.

However, I do feel that these claims of greater Iran are a little bit irredentist and imperialist in nature. Nope, Russia took a big chunk of Iran in 1813 (Gulistan treaty) and 1828 (Turkmenchay treaty), which exactly translates into modern Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia territories. All this happened because Russia wanted to trade around the shores of the Caspian sea (that also explains today's Ukrainian war). Moreover, all 3 of us enjoyed being apart from Iran and the westernization process for 100 years, when russian empire collapsed things started to get complicated as well because all 3 countries had not drawn borders for 100 years:)
