    We were few minutes into the match when there was a power outage that night, we kept hoping it was soon going to be restored while we listened with 100% attention to the commentary on my father's small transistor radio he used in listening to VOA news every night.. I couldn't count the number of times the Nigerian commentator shouted GOOOOOOOOOOOOL OH NO!!! in which the entire street would have been thrown into a frenzy. The experience that night remains nostalgic.

      Walai...look at how they were playing with desire and hunger, compared to some "imported" players we now rely on to do the job now. But we remain hopeful, the eagles will bounce back

    When Aghahowa scored the second goal the fans were all over the field because they thought the game was over due to the golden goal rule. I was outside celebrating with my friends until we were told that the game was still in progress. Lol

    To explain the pitch invasion back in those times there was a thing called the golden goal where any goal scored in extra time was the winning goal. AFCOM didn't accept this rule and the Nigerians obviously weren't to know this

  • @christophernnanna722
    @christophernnanna722 Před 3 měsíci +1

    I still remember when the Senegalese goal keeper was running down the clock in the name of sustaining injury little did he know that his delay tactics would later be in vain. It was still at that juncture that the referee had to remove an object from the back of the net 🥅 and it didn't take long Nigeria 🇳🇬 equalized.

    • @oluwafemikuyooro1849
      @oluwafemikuyooro1849 Před 3 měsíci

      I was told that it was Late Coach Tunde Laloko of Pepsi Academy that informed d referee that the object has to be removed.

    • @TolulopeAdeyemiPage
      @TolulopeAdeyemiPage Před 3 měsíci

      Wrong! It was Coach Kashimawo Olaluko who went in at half-time to remove an object the Senegalese goalkeeper had put in the goal post when the game started. It was NOT the referee at all.
      After the tournament, Kashimawo Olaluko was banned by CAF for, I think, a 2-year period for pitch invasion.

    • @christophernnanna722
      @christophernnanna722 Před 3 měsíci

      @@TolulopeAdeyemiPage I'm not disputing your claims but i still recall when the goalkeeper was delaying on the ground after he claimed he sustained an injury around 10- 15 minutes before the end of the 90minutes, I think that was when the referee removed that object.

    I think this was the game that changed the extra time rule.....that they have to play extra time to the end irrespective of golden goal scored.,.....That's where I begin to see Senegalese team as rugged......PAPA DIOP

    • @adeyinkaoladapo5863
      @adeyinkaoladapo5863 Před 3 měsíci

      His name is Not Papa Diop but *Bouba Papa Diop* ...lol...just joking. He played for both Fulham and Portsmouth back then in the EPL, and I remember his goal against France at the opening match in Korea Japan world cup. Time flys... Henri Camera seems to play for Wigan FC then or so, while Fadiga plays for Auxerre FC in France. Omo! Africa get players o, no wonder Mourinho said: "if players of African descent had to return to motherland, no one will dominate them and football would be boring without them"....

      Golden Goal Rule was never recognized by CAF, though it was a FIFA Rile.
      It was used in Korea/Japan FIFA World Cup and abolished afterwards.
      CAF never used it during tournaments organized by CAF.

      @@bigbamo92Rufai was a better goalkeeper than Shorunmu.
      Shorunmu had his stint with the Super Eagles after Rufai had left the scene.
      I don't know the time you watched Rufai, but Rufai was a good goalkeeper in 1980s and early 1990s.
      Maybe, you watched him in 1998, when he was at the twilight of his career.
      Shorunmu was more of a second/third choice till after 1998 when he became the main keeper.
      Shorunmu was good, but Rufai was a better goalkeeper than him.
      Enyeama would be ranked side by side with Rufai, but Enyeama to me comes first, but not belittling Rufai's heroics.
