The truth about internal ultrasounds for pregnancy

  • Pregnant and worried about getting an internal ultrasound? I got you!!
I got A LOT comments about the wand used for my internal ultrasounds when sharing what my first pregnancy doctor appointment looked like.
Many were scared of it, and rightfully so given how large it looks! (The camera does add 10lbs though 😉😂) So I made this video in hopes it can ease any worries you may have about it❤️❤️
Remember, you are in control. You can deny ANYTHING! I suggest talking to your doctor and have them explain why they feel the procedure is necessary then go from there. Never be afraid to voice your concerns and advocate for yourself❤️❤️
*Please note, this was just in regards to a pregnancy ultrasound. I have no idea if they go deeper for other examinations.*
What have your pregnancy doctor appointments looked like? Did you have this type of ultrasound done?

**I should note, that based on the information I was given it shouldn’t hurt IF you do not have a preexisting condition related to the area. Of course every tech and doctor are different with different techniques though. That’s why it’s so important to know you can always say NO to anything you are uncomfortable with. Talk to your doctor and see what your options are ❤Also, this is just in reference to pregnancy. Not checks for issues in the area. I do not know what the protocol is for that and if it’s any different.**

I had an internal to check for ovarian cysts when I was trying for our baby (thankfully nothing out of the ordinary, which cleared us to try the treatment that finally got us pregnant), but when I went in for my 8 week ultrasound, they didn’t use the internal wand, which surprised me. Not mad, but I had been expecting the wand. 🤷‍♀️

As someone with a pelvic floor dysfunction, it can hurt. However, I had a pelvic exam and pap after the internal ultrasound and it was probably 10x worse. And having the internal ultrasound eased so much anxiety, and was really worth it. For anyone out there that experiences pain with insertion, I highly recommend making sure the tech knows that and asking if you can insert it yourself.

I wish I knew I could've said no to this, I was having a miscarriage with my first in the ER and a lady came in to do this to me, I was scared and she bullied me for it in the hallway after to her other nurse buddies. You always have the option to say no but it might not be wise to do so.
I do not know your medical history but it is possible that the wanted to check if the pregnancy was outside the uterus.
That does not in any way make it acceptable for you to be bullied.
If you have the option it can be healing to go back and ask them to explain what happened and why. In a stressfull emergency sitation so much can happen that we have difficulty processing it.

I mentioned this in your last post about it, but I'll say it again because I feel like if I had heard this before my first time having one, it would have eased some fears. My internal ultrasounds for my pcos have been more comfortable than my external ones. Externally, they have to press pretty hard to see anything (if they see anything at all), and it can be a little painful. I think with internal ultrasound, they know that it is a bit nerve-racking, and they tend to be so understanding. They will usually ask you to insert it if you are comfortable and able to do it.
I'm sure it depends a lot on the tech. But it was completely painless, like if you've ever had a pap smear, this is like 5x easier than that. In my personal experience.

Sonographer here. This should not hurt at all or as much. Uncomfortable? Sure. I've done the procedure multiple times and it does take patience and allowing patients to relax. Lots of gel on the probe is key. A great sonographer should always be checking in to make sure you are comfortable but of course you should always let him ( likely a Doc) or her know if its painful. As far as going in very deep, techs cannot see much of anything if the probe is right up against the vaginal wall or cervix, and then there is bowel gas to contend with. I often ask patience to guide me to know where to maneuver the probe so they are most comfortable.

But i told her that i feel uncomfortable about it because I bleed easily, and she said "ok lets first try with other one, and if we can't see anything we will do cervical check." And voila! My gyno does this ultrasounds as I part of a regular yearly checkup. On every patient, pregnant or not, so I had those a number of times. If done correctly, doctor will put a fresh condom on the wand first to make sure it's all hygienic and then insert it. It's not supposed to hurt at all. Mine indeed didn't and I'd say that if yours hurts, something isn't right. Or your doctor is doing something wrong.

OK I just have to say I’ve had multiple internal ultrasounds because I have PCOS and when I was getting diagnosed I had three surgeries all that went wrong that all misdiagnosed me and have had this procedure done about 35-40 times and I can say it is completely uncomfortable I’ve never had a good experience while having this done. I understand it’s not supposed to be a walk in the park but it’s not comfortable or not painful in my opinion at all and I have a high pain tolerance also I don’t know who is telling you it’s only 3 inches they stick in because that’s definitely not true, I’ve had doctors go much further and it wouldn’t make sense to make the instrument 8 inches long. If you’re only getting used 3 inches of the tip… Not a hater just had totally different experiences with these so I get you’re trying to get girls to not be afraid of them but they’re something to definitely be wary of, and make sure you’re comfortable with a doctor before you agree to it in my opinion. I hope you have a safe and healthy pregnancy and your hair is beautiful by the way.

When ur not pregnant, they put alot more inside, they mash ur insides around. Ive had them press ontop of my stomach too to find my hidden ovary many times. Dang it hurts like heck. But pregnant. Man they are so much gentler, they dont put much in. They dont need to go spelunking 😅. Baby is pretty easy to find. So thats why shes saying this. For pregnant girls it shouldnt hurt or be that uncomfortable. But for the non pregnant ladies having exploratory ultrasounds. Man thats gonna be really comfortable everytime.

I cannot possible make a video covering every possible scenario. As always, anything posted should just serve as general information and hopefully be a jumping point on where to research. 🤗 I did note in the pinned comment that this particular ultrasound covered in the video is JUST for pregnancy when trying to get an accurate picture of baby. I mention that it may differ if it’s being used to diagnose or check on something else. So in terms of depth, that was just in reference to trying to see the baby since they only need to reach the cervix (which is about 3inches) but again, this is just in regards to getting a clear picture of baby during a pregnancy. ❤❤❤

@khadijafayyaz6184 ok so the best thing you could do is see a fertility specialist. Check ur coverage, it might be out of pocket. But dont even waste your time with a normal gynocologist or obgyn. I spent years trying different meds and weightloss supplements. Nothing worked. Specialists can do so much more. Not just ivf. I wish i had gone sooner. I will say. Most specialist offices do have bmi limits to do ivf because of the anesthesia for the egg extraction process. I lost the weight i needed too at the time to do the procedure and im so glad i did. I ended up with 6 healthy embryos. One of which is my 11month old baby. And i didnt use supplements to lose the weight. Just calorie counting and working out everyday. It was hard but so worth it. But they can do other things with much higher success even if u dont do ivf.

You can't go past your cervix... your cervix is open the size of a pin hole unless you're in labor and dilated... Or the doc or tech has given you meds to dilate your cervix. You also can't go around the cervix... its literally the doorway to the uterus, the only way in this through.
And if an abdominal ultrasound doesn't need to penetrate the abdomen to see the baby, why would an internal ultrasound need to go through the cervix to see the baby?

It's so weird to me when women say they've only had it done once or so after they got pregnant. I've had dozens of these done trying to get pregnant.

It felt like they were rearranging my guts when they were adjusting it. It may not hurt in terms of actual sharp pain, but it is not the nicest thing in the world.

This is my first pregnancy and I was diagnosed with placenta previa. Basically my placenta is too low so every time I go get ultrasounds I have to have an internal as well. The external ultrasound doesn’t measure the placenta correctly and the Dr needs to see if it’s moved. In the last 8 months I think I’ve had it done 9 times.

I never did any ultrasounds other than the anatomy scan.

I recently had to get an internal ultrasound for a PCOS diagnosis
It is mildly uncomfortable but it doesn't hurt
like I remember just feeling a lot of pressure but it was not painful
feel like for me the worst part was the awkwardness I felt having someone just jabbing something right up there
    😅😅

I said no to the ultrasound lady because i was scared, and i was 6 weeks. She then had to do the basic ultrasound, and she could see everything. i dont know why she wanted to do it.

I have a tilted uterus so i had to have this done and i was pretty uncomfortable but i guess it wasn't so bad. But i hated it and i also was tense, so i guess thats why it wasn't great for me 😩

Ive heard of a few stories where the tech was to rough and caused a miscarriage. This was a big no from me with my 8 month old and it will be again if I have another.

Goodness gracious. TMI. The probe isn't for pleasure , its for a medical purpose. Or perhaps your anatomy is different than many other women's; shall I say more accommodating?!
