Melanie Martinez’s “Strawberry Shortcake” deals with a lot of different subjects, all related to the sensuality and body-type ideologies of girls. On a grander scale, it deals with the issue of harassment against females in general. And basically, what Melanie is saying is that women are compelled to make themselves sensually appealing, even going to great lengths to do so. This is particularly in regards to trying to achieve popular notions of beauty.
The problem, is that it's something girls learn from a very young age, and will endure during for a big part of their life, without being able to do really anything about it. I mean what is supposed to make you learn the basics. Schools. For example, I used to be in a private school ( catholic ), and the rules about clothing were different. Girls couldn't wear any makeup, or skirt/clothes that were 'too short' ( above knee ). Once a girl was punished because she had put shorts on, when they thought she should've put either a skirt or a pants. It was 37°, and the girl was uncomfortable with wearing skirts. Hop, punishment you're good to go, can't let the boys go wild after all. The punishment was simply about exposing the person of how she disrespected the rules. I felt really bad for her. For boys, no hairstyles too different, no earrings, and.. I don't remember. Well basically, stay in the norme. That sucked. It's like considering boys like animals, and that's certainly not what you should teach them in order to respect girls and people. It's toxic.
