  • We can define the characteristics of life, and there are some things that clearly fit that definition (e.g. me) and other things that are clearly not alive (my computer). However, there are some things that are in the boundary between living and not alive - like viruses. Are viruses actually living beings? It's an interesting question that can be argued in multiple ways.
Our current experience with the COVID-19 pandemic really makes me feel like the SARS-CoV-2 is alive. But it can't perform all the functions listed as characteristics of life on its own. It needs animals to get reproduce. It's a complicated question that is interesting to contemplate.
