HOWEVER, this movie scene gives a much longer run time for the missile. THEREFORE, if you wanted to be realistic, the missile wouldn't have reached the jet ANYWAY. 2) the speed of the 3M9M4 is Mach 2.8, the speed of a J-11A is Mach 2.35 (yeah). Well most anti aircraft missiles are much faster than the plane If it gets behind you there is no way of outrunning it unless you have a plane that's as fast as the blackbird Intercepting is like sprinting to catch someone in close proximity for a short while not chasing after them
The missile flies 5-10x faster than the jet. Except for the newest missiles, they will do a single flyby attack. If they have a lock, they will detonate near the plane. If not, they will fly past it and detonate after a specific time. It will not turn around and chase the place like in the movies. Think of it like an airburst round. The only way to avoid it is to break its lock while it is still far away. If it still has a lock a few dozen km away, it will almost always hit you.
I'm guessing. but i think intercept missiles are designed to defend anything from entering a very specific area. so they have high speed short range. as they burn through their fuel quickly. as they don't care to chase anything down outside of their small firing radius that they are protecting. as their aim is to defend a specific area. they will come in very fast on their target and not be slow like a jet and ignore everything outside their area. they basically predict where the target is going to be and get there very fast and blow up at same time. they don't have much turn abilities as they are based on speed and prediction. unlike other missiles that are designed to hit an enemy target rather than defend your own area. which would mean needing more fuel for travelling longer distances, maybe even ability to keep track of moving target using gps, ability to pass through enemy missile defence systems, stealth etc. so they would be designed differently and have different abilities.

It will basically predict your path instead of following you directly from behind
It will find the shortest path to hit the aircraft not chasing it
I'm guessing.
but i think intercept missiles are designed to defend anything from entering a very specific area.
so they have high speed short range. as they burn through their fuel quickly. as they don't care to chase anything down outside of their small firing radius that they are protecting.
as their aim is to defend a specific area. they will come in very fast on their target and not be slow like a jet and ignore everything outside their area.
they basically predict where the target is going to be and get there very fast and blow up at same time. they don't have much turn abilities as they are based on speed and prediction.
unlike other missiles that are designed to hit an enemy target rather than defend your own area.
which would mean needing more fuel for travelling longer distances, maybe even ability to keep track of moving target using gps, ability to pass through enemy missile defence systems, stealth etc.
so they would be designed differently and have different abilities.
