Mount Jefferson: Skiing in the Summer and Who Wants a GoPro?

  • Sorry for the spammy title I couldn’t resist, but seriously there’s a GoPro Hero 6 on Mount Jefferson that fell out of my waist belt and down Milk Glacier. It wasn’t the only bad thing to happen on our trip to one of Oregons most extinct volcanoes. Christof and I were constantly reminded that things never go as smooth as you would hope. But in the end, I think it all worked out rather well. Except for the GoPro of course.

    This traverse is no joke and to be able to do it and film it with such great views and angles is a testament to the skill of these guys. Jefferson may not be the highest mountain to climb but its it probably the most nerve wrecking on that traverse around to the summit push.

    Man you guys needed to go a year later, hiked through there in May 2019 and there was a section on the PCT maybe a mile and a half south of the Pamelia Lake trail junction that was wiped clear or the brush and trees by avalanche. You could have hiked straight up to the top of the tree line.

    Very nice video. My wife and I were there 2 years ago as well, having the same issue, but decided to continue up through the bushes, which took so much energy out of us that we never made it to the summit. This was the first mountain we climbed after arriving there from Austria for our summer holiday which included Rainier as well. Being used to perfectly groomed routes on every mountain in the Alps it made us a bit nervous for the other mountains, but luckily it only got better after Jefferson :) after seeing this video we at least don't feel like idiots anymore for not being able to find the "trail"

    I'm going to Jefferson next month to find three things:
    -The GoPro
    -Danny's sanity
    -The correct route off of the PCT and up the SW ridge.
    I could use your help with the third. Seriously, looks like leaving the PCT where the lower bit of the ridge intersects the trail is the right move. I know there was an avy that cleared the way near there last year, but I'm not real keen on hiking up a known slide path. Do you think your summer attempt was thwarted just by virtue of being too late in the season? Too much growth? Any idea if May might be better in that regard? And is my approximation for where to leave the PCT about right?

    If it makes yall feel any better, Jefferson is a BITCH! Took me twice to summit it, and it is by far the scariest climb I have ever done by the difficulty and danger metric (almost died in a freak storm on Grand Teton, so that takes the cake, but not due to a scary and dangerous climb), and I have climbed the 20 Primary Cascade Volcanoes. My dad has been on it five times and only summited twice. I have a number of other friends who have climbed it, and not a single one has had a good experience. This peak blows man - glad you got it done on your first try! Sorry about the GoPro :(

    I really dig your videos, you guys obviously have some skill with editing and cinematography. I'm curious though, has the Forest Service changed its regulations concerning Drones? Last I heard it's super illegal to fly one in National Parks and Forests, apparently they're concerned about them falling out of the sky and starting a wildfire.

    • @cnuila
      @cnuila Před 5 lety +8

      Nicolas Reed drones are prohibited in national parks and wilderness areas (not national forests), although they may be flown over as long as they are launched outside the boundaries. Jefferson is split down the middle with one side being Indian reservation, thus allowing Danny to launch outside wilderness and capture some footage.
      Danny often spends more time pouring over maps to make sure he can fly the drone legally than he does researching the route:)
