The Power of Place
Barry Brailsford says his love of the land and the mystery of the past is his birthright. Born in Greymouth, near Te Ake Ake o Poutini, the ancient anchorage of the great navigator Poutini, and nurtured by the wild coastlines and forested mountains of Westland, New Zealand, he knew a childhood where the spirit was free to soar.
He graduated MA (Hons) from Canterbury University, was a member of the NZ Archaeology Association Council and a Principal Lecturer at the Christchurch College of Education.
In 1990 he was awarded an MBE for his contribution to education and Maori scholarship.
What a beautiful conveyed soul, entrusted with the ancient knowledge of the old ones, as a waka to carry forth the very stories that were hidden for centuries. The waitaha were a true representation of equality, peace, love, compassion and balanced energy, the masculine, and the feminine perfectly aligned. I am grateful these wisdom's have been opened up to our generation and the many to come. When we see past the physical deep into the spiritual, we see with new eyes. Thankyou Barry nga mihi.

I had made many trips to New Zealand and had spent many days with my Maori friends and my Whanau (family) before I even began to have some understanding of what is meant by "This is my place to stand" I know that I have still more to learn about it's meaning.
"My place to stand" means that i belong. I have a Whanau. I have a Tribe. I have a land. And because of those connections, my feet are Rooted firmly in the earth of my Ancestors and I have my place. I am not confused about who or what I am. I know. I have the blood of my Ancestors surging through my veins, and no one can take this identity from me.
So many Maori have expressed their observation that the Pakeha (white people) seem ungrounded and that even though they have "their" land in "New Zealand," they have "no place to stand" because they do not have the connection with their Ancestors.
"My place to stand" may be far more important in my life than it seemed at first.

As u can tell by my name I am Tangata Whenua o Aotearoa. My blood connections r from all over the world-and tribal ones here: Ngati/Te Aatiawa of the North (Te Taitokerau) thru my great x 5 grand father Te Aho O Te Rangi Te Wharepuu-his father the great Waikato Ariki Pootatau Te Wherowhero and his mother (whose name I wont mention)-from the above mentioned people. He married my great x5 grandmother who is from the original people of Taupo/Te Aatiawa/Tuwharetoa/Te Whanganui A Tara). This is my mothers lines. My fathers connections to original peoples: Tahinga (Tainui West Coast), Urukehu-(▲▲), Turehu-all West Coast connections in Tainui, as well as Taranaki-Ngati Ruanui/Nga Rauru/Tangahoe.
My connection is thru these and other ancestors to Waitaha. Im also Scottish (Clan Dixon/Keith) Irish (McCormack) English/Norwegian/Norman (Randall).
