  • It's Sunday 25th June, and we're back down in Devon to pick up two awkward stations - Samford Courtenay and Okehampton.
The line is only served by GWR/National Rail trains on summer Sundays ONLY, and at Okehampton, the Dartmoor Railway then runs services to nearby Melton Quarry/Viaduct. They sometimes run trains back to Sampford Courtenay too.
More on the Dartmoor Railway here: www.dartmoorrailway.com/
Look out for Percy the station cat in the video, he has his own Facebook page here: / percy-okehampton-stati...

Thanks to Martin for the drone footage - filmed with permission of the Dartmoor Railway.

Lovely area - it'd be great to see a regular weekday service via Okehampton again, I'd hope that none of the retro signs and features of the stations would be replaced though. It seems to be a growing trend to rebrand individual stations on the National Network back into old liveries, long may it continue!!
Also nice to see that Thumper unit still out and about, even with the blue NSE moquette!!

I last went to Devon last July, but before then hadn't been for a few years. From when i was a baby to mid teens, my family and I spent a week every year staying in the same farmhouse, with the same family. My sister and I got involved with caring for the cows, milking them, feeding them... Devon has a lot of very special memories for me. I love it, and can't wait to go back again. I feel homesick for it sometimes. You are very lucky to live there.

You probably had no idea at the time that your Saturday only service would be seeing major changes.

And no-doubt you may know of others.
Anyway, back to Okehampton - any extension on to Plymouth will get support as a useful back-up just in case (who knows) the Devon coast line should finally one day fall into the sea!!!!!

Whatever colours that carriage is wearing on the outside, at about the 1:00 mark Vicki got into a coach that used to belong to Connex/Connex Southeastern, probably in the mid to late Nineties. This is brilliant: a mainline railway service to a mainline-connected heritage railway station.
I am wondering what would happen if someone managed to restore those old main lines like Waverly Route or Grand Central Railway as a heritage line, while part of those lines are still used for mainline services? (northern part of Waverly Route is now Borders Railway, while southern part of GCR is London-Aylsbury line and the Met) Will that open the doors to recommercialization of those lines?

It would be awesome to ride that line across the viaduct in what we in the States call a motorcar or track speeder (typically a 2-seater track inspection vehicle). Do you guys have anything like that? Motorcars are now only operated by preservationists, with the "hy-rail" vehicle (a standard pick up truck with extendable rail wheels) now taking it's place. However in NZ there is a disused line in which they run groups of modified golf carts for sightseeing. czcams.com/video/wTFs52v86XA/video.html
