  • When I first saw this unfolding on my microscope screen, I kept saying, "Wow! WOW!" I didn't have any idea what this was, but it was captivating.
    So, this is not one being, but a colony of diatoms. Diatoms are actually a type of algae, most prolific, and a food source (directly or indirectly) for just about everything. They are single cells, can live in colonies, remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and create oxygen. Their cell walls are made of silica, so it's correct to say they live in "glass" houses!
    I discovered this in a sample of water taken from a dish I left in my yard (under a potted plant), using a Tomlov DM202 Max microscope.
