He was pretty freshly just come off a years-long steady diet of heroin and crack here, having kicked it pretty rapidly, and w/ heroin in particular, even after the physical part ends, your 'happy chemicals' are so washed away that you are literally left with this feeling, like...like you will never be physically capable of feeling joy again, as if you literally just burned out all the receptors, and now you are doomed to stagger through a perpetual state of awkward melancholy [I say awkward because its not like a pasdionate bursting into tears, its more like uncomfortable, don't wanna look people in the eyes, stare at your feet sad]. I have to imagine he was still going through some level of that here. Many years later, his suicide is linked on some level with the overly rapid way he tried to kick too many habits at once: hard drugs, anti depressants, booze, even things like smoking and red meat. Doing so can make you feel good, and liberated, and clean (eventually) before it snaps back like a rubber band, and any negative emotions you've been suppressing come back to the surface all at once...That's what they think made it possible for take himself out of the picture in such a brutal, sudden way

@wantsumcomegetsum2530 I’ve read most of the books (“ES + the Big Nothing” I got when it first came out, “Torment Saint”)-I also have the Autumn Dewilde one, but it’s something more of a coffee table book, although w/ some good photos. I also watched “Heaven Adores You”. I’m sure there’s more stuff out there I’ve missed so far, but for the most part all the little details of the ES “narrative” are pretty deeply engrained in my mind. At this specific moment, I’m not up for debating it (I could be at some point, if you want to), but I will say that there was a time that I was DEEPLY obsessed with the notion that he has been murdered, almost certainly by Chiba-to the point that I would try to rile people up about it and feel genuine, deep anger about it myself, but the more time passed, the more I looked at Elliott’s personal arc from childhood all the way up to the end in a broad sense (even with people who didn’t have the glare and pressure of fame and public image), and also who Chiba seems to be as a person, that feeling of certainty about a deep moral wrong slipped further and further away until it didn’t exist anymore, essentially. I know there’s so many times where there’s that feeling of, ‘this is too convenient, people are counting on a majority accepting this because it would fit so neatly with what came before, something’s definitely wrong’-and then it is (or may be). But again, just personally, I eventually came to end up feeling that in this particular case, it was just that: an equally tragic example, not of shadowy cover up, but of someone who seemed to have been assuring us they’d eventually do something again and again and again…finally following through. A random footnote: It was alcohol Smith quit on his birthday, he was supposed to have been clean of everything else but his core meds as of 2002
