  • I thought I'd make something since there really isn't enough out there to showcase how good this thing is. I've only had it a week and it's already up there in my favourite synths. The signal path is Deckard's Dream Rev 2 into a Universal Audio Apollo Twin mk2. Nothing has been done to the audio besides normalisation.

    • @vitalsau9960

      I find they're quite different and I enjoy them for different purposes. I like sequencing the OB6, not so much Deckard's. I much prefer playing Deckard's than OB6 though (not that the OB6 is bad for that).
      I ended up selling the OB6 and I still have Deckards. One thing that bothered me a little after getting Deckards was how thin the OB6s Oscillators are. I still love the OB6 and would consider getting the desktop version though.

      @bandito3377 Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks. Man, I would have a hard time selling the OB-6 as it's honestly the best synth I've ever owned. It gives me hope that you would still consider getting it again albeit in desktop version. I picked up a Kurzweil Midiboard today and hooked it up to the OB-6. Hard to describe but the expressive touch of the Midiboard adds an extra dimension to the OB-6. It feels like a totally different synth now. I imagine, as others have found, that the Midiboard paired with the Deckard's Dream is indeed a dream combination.

      Granted, it's a great-sounding synth, but as a CS-80 owner, I'm not hearing any great similarities (I know it has gone through masses of processing to him my PC). Polyphonic aftertouch is one of the key characteristics of the CS-80, so a Poly aftertouch controller would be an essential addition to your shopping list if wishing to attempt any form of emulation...

    I have a question. Maybe a stupid one, but I'm not a keyboard player so please don't flame me. I love keyboards and listening to them, but have to find time to learn to play first.
    What would be a good synth to start with? I'm an all analog guy(cs80 rulz), so I would like to get one that is not too expensive, but not totally crap at the same time. I don't mind newer digital, but one that at least makes a good effort of sounding like good old analogue ones.
    I'm a Vangelis/Tangerine Dream fanatic so you get the picture.
    DD sounds like a dream btw! Keep it up!

    • @vitalsau9960
      @vitalsau9960  Před 5 lety +1

      That's okay, it's not a stupid question, it is a difficult one to answer without knowing you personally, but I'll try anyway.
      It sounds like you want a polysynth if you're into the cs80, which unfortunately means much more expensive than a mono (generally).
      I would recommend getting a midi keyboard and software synthesizers at first, they are not as fun and personal as hardware but they sure make up for it in value and a huge range of sounds. Besides a few hardware synths I got Arturia V collection when I started, I couldn't recommend it more, it even has a cs80 in it. It sounds really great and there are a lot of vintage synths to pick from. Alternatively I'm aware there are a whole bunch of free software synths, I don't use software at all anymore so I can't point you at any more of them but I suppose Google can?

I'll get a midi keyboard first then, see what happens when I learn something. Thanks!

      @vitalsau9960  Před 5 lety +1

      @@juricagalekovic937 In that case try and find a hardware mono synth that you like the sound of and is within what you want to spend that is capable of sending midi data out. This way you get to enjoy a real user interface and instrument and you have the flexibility of software as well. If you don't mind spending the money on something like a Sequential Rev 2, I'd recommend that for a polysynth.

    Vitals AU Be honest and tell me what you some of the shortcomings of this synth... I also own an OB-6 and a Prophet 6. In my experience this synth is incapable of sounds like OB-6 preset 504. That sort of fast decay on the envelope that is a staple of a lot of Moroder and Tangerine Dream Sounds.
    I remember someone once warning me when I was saving up for a CS-80 that it was a very temperamental and strange synth.
    Would you share the opinion that the DD is not a workhorse synth but one that is capable of great cinematic type sounds that other synths are incapable of?

    • @vitalsau9960
      @vitalsau9960  Před 4 lety

      I don't know the preset 504 since I don't own an OB-6 anymore but you can definitely get very snappy envelopes on Deckard's. With every synth there's going to be some thing's you don't like about them. The CS-80 is temperamental but Deckard's isn't. I think it's capable of a lot of different sounds but it does shine where other synths can't go, I would argue in a similar way to the OB-6.

    • @michaelk3550
      @michaelk3550 Před 4 lety

      @@vitalsau9960 I agree with nearly all of what you said with the exception of the DD not being temperamental. IMVHO the DD is practically a CS-80 sound engine having played both. Maybe it's just the interface that makes me think that way. What is interesting about your video is I use an OB6 as a midi controller and it only has universal aftertouch, I feel like I'm missing out.
      Are you by chance using MPE or a midi keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch now? Off the top of my head the DD has 3 settings 1)Channel Pressure 2)Poly afterT 3)MPE and maybe a 4th I don't remember.

      Hi Andy, first off thanks for the kind words. My relationship with the OB6 was always a bit love hate since I found that you had to work to find the sweet spots and I found the oscillators a bit thin. Honestly I decided within a week to sell the OB when I got DD. DD is pretty much all sweet spots, I love it. They do sound quite different though and I find myself missing the filter fairly often from the OB, the harmonics are just gorgeous. In the end I think it comes down to wether you like the character of the OB or DD.

      I appreciate your breakdown of the 2 synths (and your playing on the demo is absolutely amazing) - I'm getting my OB-6 this week so I'll be able to hear first-hand how thin/thick the oscillators/filter is, but I just discovered that the DD exists a few days ago!!! Of course shortly after purchasing the OB-6 lol, and now I'm feeling iffy because your demo of the DD encompasses a lot of the sounds I'm looking for in a poly. I bought a minimoog model d a few weeks ago and it has become my favorite instrument I've ever played period, and I'm now becoming obsessed with looking for the perfect poly to complement what I believe is the perfect monosynth - I'm not looking for a poly with a huge modulation matrix etc, I'm just looking for THE BEST-sounding poly as far as oscillators + filters + env, just with the raw basics, and the CS-80 is incomparable to my ears... UNTIL i heard your DD demo haha. Anyways, just spitballing a lot of thoughts, and I'm afraid there's no way I could demo a DD in-person so I'll just have to make a gut decision between the OB-6 once I have it in my hands and the DD

    What’s better the OB or the DD? Do I want both ?

      I prefer DD, It has much larger sweet spots than the OB. I sold the OB after getting Deckards, which I regret, but not enough to buy it again. They have very different character, so in that way you can justify owning both.

    This is an analog synth that sounds like a VST, in fact I got some VSTs that sound better than this, what a shame.

      I don’t disagree. I’ve yet to hear any demos that justify the price and sourcing a controller with poly aftertouch. I get that it wants to do its own thing besides be a CS-80 clone, but I’ll pass.

      It's not about VST vs analog - it's about creativity and workflow. I am sure the ME80 (or the arturia one) sounds as good but having all these controls at your fingertips is a world of difference. It still blows my mind that all these sounds are totally analog.

      Based on this demo alone I'd agree with you. I suggest listening to the demo tracks on the Black Corporation website though. They display far more skill with patch design. Not to mention, CZcams compression sucks the life out of everything so analog recordings are always at a disadvantage on CZcams. In a studio the difference is obvious.

    Analog is a myth. Listen to the Novation Peak. It sounds 100x better than this thing.

      Software alone should be able to do everything an analog synth can do, if the software is good enough. In practice though, I usually find that software and hardware tend to encourage somewhat different choices in sound design, making different things easier or harder. They're not completely interchangeable even if they have identical capabilties, because there's a human involved and the human's relationship with the synth is a big factor in the outcome.
      On a different note though, every time I've seen a Deckard's Dream demo, I've found myself thinking about how to implement the exact same patches on a Peak, and wondering if the DD can actually do anything the Peak cannot.
      It may be useful to keep the DD in mind while designing sounds on the Peak, or on other synths, in order to get more ideas about how to use the available resources. Similarly, for a long time when Google was hiring Java programmers, they required people to have a lot of Python experience... because they wanted people who would think in Python but implement the ideas in Java. That kind of thing can be useful on synths too, because some synths encourage very specific types of designs or workflows, while other synths are more agnostic or general-purpose... and the ideas embodied in those specific ones can act as a guide on the more general ones.
