World's First Images of Newborn White Shark?

  • In light of the recent press regarding this shark, I'm releasing some select footage of this encounter that occurred off on July 9th, 2023. I have over 18 minutes of footage of this little creature. You can read the corresponding research paper in the scientific journal, Environmental Biology of Fishes. The link is below.
    link.springer.com/article/10....
Press inquires: you are welcome to embed this video only for articles. For all footage licensing inquiries please reach out directly to me via my email or the contact form on my website.
I believe the highest likelihood the images in this video shows a newborn shark. While determining the exact age of the shark is nearly impossible, there are several key observations that support this being a newborn.
The shape of the fins, especially the dorsal fin is a major clue. The size of the shark, approximately 1.5m long, & the white membrane like material sloughing off. The paper suggests this is a uterine milk coating still adhered to the sharks body.
The appearance of the shark looks nearly identical to known deceased neonates in the record.
While the shark is unique, we proposed a skin disorder could also be the explanation for the unique white coating that is sloughing off. However, this explanation does not take into account the unique sharks morphology. Specifically the round fins and most vital, the round dorsal fin. When compared to existing images of deceased neonates on record, the dorsal fin matches up precisely.

I'm NOT a marine biologist. As with all CZcams content, I encourage independent verification of facts via official scientific and trustworthy sources. I will strive to post citations for any information I discuss here whenever possible. My goal is to use photography and drones to bring awareness to wildlife and the nature around us. After reading the article, I believe this is 100% a newborn white shark. Everything adds up. The large females showing up there at that time of year, the fact that this was seen at the (suggested) time they come there to give birth, and the fact that you can see normal pigmentation under that white material covering that shark. I also read in one of my shark books, that in the summer of 1955, a helicopter spotted what appeared to be multiple baby white sharks (I think it said off California) swimming around not too far from a nearby pier.

I read the paper too and although it could be a random white shark with a skin condition, I've never seen or read of any that looked like this. Plus the normal looking skin underneath. But as I remember the original video posted, wasn't there a large female that dove down rapidly not long before this small white shark showed up flaking off the "vernix" like coating? The paper made it seem like these events were further apart. If events were like it was presented in the original YT video I saw, I'm voting new baby great white.

Carlos's hard work & dedication paying off now with this spectacular item & interview shown here in the UK's BBC News tonight. Got to dig out now my footage while snorkelling alone in the Tubbaha Reefs in the Philippines of being approached then bumped in the chest by a juvenile whale shark, but must brush up on my interview skills for the BBC first!

One of the most incredible things I've ever seen. I also have seen the video you took of the female white shark giving birth and that was also so amazing and awesome. The work you do is not only breathtakingly beautiful, it is groundbreaking science as well. Congratulations again!! Such fascinating animals. Thank you for sharing with the world.

Kudos to you for continuing this passionate "work" - though we all know and appreciate it is indeed work, time and patience, but from every shot we know you enjoy it. I saw this on some national news and it already hit the Yahoo! homepage, great to see you getting recognized for your key work in protecting and understanding these amazing sea animals. Probably the cutest shark ever haha, I have no problem saying that. Even it's movements are young, but still so elegant in the water.

Wow Carlos! As a fellow droner & diver I've just seen your post & interview on the BBC News here in the UK of the new born great white. Spectacular! As a long time subscriber I say keep up the good work as an advocate for sharks, this'll send your subscriptions soaring! Now where's my GoPro footage of being approached & bumped in the chest by a juvenile whale shark whilst snorkelling alone in the Tubbataha Reefs, Philippines?

This channel actually helps with shark conservation. Swimming with, pretending they are friends, and petting them does not (like Ramsey, Adriana, mermaid “shark girls”)
