    Welcome to Moat Cottage Homesteading, I'm Elissa and here at Moat Cottage, we raise and grow Muscovy Ducks and Chickens, process some of our own free range meat, organic vegetables and fruit.
    We grow all of our herbs for both eating and medicinal purposes as well as hunt, fish and forage.
    We preserve our produce for the year ahead by canning, dehydrating and freezing and we work on being prepared for emergency situations.
    Good health and natural living has always been a high priority for our family and despite this two family members are living with auto immune diseases, myself included.
    We focus on what we can do, when we can do it, stay positive and so I make these videos for you, on my best days.

      I raised 2 muscovy ducks from birth .. my drake imprinted on me and is now a year old and still thinks I'm his mommy .. the little girl imprinted on my drake ( who did a good job of raising the little girl ) she is 2 months old and she hates me .its so funny because my drake follows me everywhere and the little girl follows him every where so she always has to be around me anyways lol .. I hope as she gets older she won't be afraid of me like she is now ... even the wild muscovies down at the pond aren't afraid of me and one of the moma ducks even let's me around her babies and her babies love me and recognize me in a crowd and come straight up to me for their treats . And I can't get my own little muscovy to come up to me even when I have treats lol .. just goes to show that each muscovy had their own unique personalities and their own individual thoughts, likes and dislikes. Just like humans .

    Woah that’s what 2 months old Muscovy ducks look like? That’s great!!
    Theres 4 Muscovy ducklings that are about 25 days old, her mom unfortunately passed away 3 days ago and now they’re on their own in my neighborhood lake
    My mom, me and another neighbor lady have been keeping a watch throughout the day on them since there’s a mean duck that has tried drowning them, cornered one and started pecking her and the same night the mom died he got a hold of one and basically shredded him to pieces, which was sad.
    We have been feeding them duck feed pellets mixed with some cracked corn every day, hopefully they all make it another month so they can get to a size that they aren’t vulnerable to the mean duck anymore and their mom’s care and dedication don’t go to waste

      The ducklings and Mother are fed a Duckling starter mix ( not the one for chickens because that has too much medicine for ducks and dont let laying birds get the starter mix) they have access to fresh greens including kale, silverbeet, spinach, snow pea leaves and grasses (as well as other produce from the veggie garden), bugs, flies and worms, so there is a wide variety of food around for them and when they are over 8 weeks, I feed them a mix of fermented grains instead of the starter mix.

    So cute! Have considered getting them for many years...because I hear they eat the ticks and mosquitoes in the garden. Are they hardy in winter? We can get as low as 5 degrees sometimes in winter, but 15 degrees more so on coldest nights in the Upper South of USA. ALSO, that netting at 5:25 is great. It looks like it doesn't tangle! I net my smaller fruit trees, but still struggle with squirrels. Any advice? THANK YOU!

      @MoatCottage  Před 4 lety +1

      Fran Looving
      Hello Fran, Muscovy ducks are fabulous in the garden as far as pest control goes.
      We get down to -6C, that’s 21F and they don’t mind at all, they have twice as many feathers as chickens, but I can’t say how they go with extreme cold.
      The netting I am using for my garden, was second hand from a vineyard, so it’s super thick and good quality, industrial strength, so it doesn’t tangle and is fairly easy to put on and off when needed
      We don’t have squirrels in Australia, so I’m not sure how they behave.
      😊

      👋🏽 Hello, I feed my baby ducklings a starter mix especially for ducks and geese (not the one for chickens because there is too much medication in that for ducks)
      They also have access to fresh greens 🥬 including kale, silverbeet and grasses, bugs 🐛 , flies, 🦟 and worms, so there is a wide variety of food around for them and when they want there is also a mix of fermented grains but Muscovies like a lot of greens 🥬

      My pool was filled with home grown Silverbeet leaves (Chard). I put the leaves in the water so they stay fresh while they are being consumed, especially in the hot Summer. They also like kale, broccoli and cauliflower leaves (if you happen to garden without chemicals or buy organic chemical free produce) the devour the green varieties before they start on the red and purple varieties. They also enjoy the occasional watermelon treat during Summer.

    Hi there! I have another question. So both our female Muscovy are now sitting on their nests. It’s been about a 2 Saturday’s. I’m feeling nervous about this. One of them will be a first time mom and the other has had chicks before but not with us. This is our first time raising ducks and I’m wondering if there is a check list of what I need to do to prepare for so many chicks. Do the females need separate spaces to hatch and eat, does the drake need to be out of the picture? Do they eat the babies? I’m in Boise Idaho USA it’s early Spring and can get a bit chilly at nigh. Do they need a warming light? A brooder? Any helpful tips from you would help this first time human chick momma. Thank you so much! Melanie

    Hi Elissa, Can you tell me if you normally separate the mama from the rest of the flock once she's gone broody in addition to once the chicks have hatched? Also, at what age are the ducklings ready to leave mama to be re-homed/sold? Thanks so much!

    • @MoatCottage
      @MoatCottage  Před 4 lety +2

      Hello Rewilding Heart, it depends, but usually if a Mumma duck goes broody on her eggs (or who ever laid them in her nest) I leave her until they hatch, so as not to upset her.
      But only if it is safe for her and the eggs.
      I collect (egg search for) eggs in unsuitable locations, so I don’t have a duck sitting on a heap of eggs in an unsuitable location.
      We have raven steal eggs and other predators that will get babies.
      I have suitable cage, in the night time coupe run, as well as other safe places for them to lay and go broody and when they are due to hatch I set up the cage with food and water and close the cage door. That way I have little ducklings safe from flying predators until they are bigger.
      I let them out with Mumma when I can babysit but usually towards the end of the day so they go back in to the cage with mum and I’m not trying to catch them all.
      Mum can then get out and stretch her wings, take a bath and I get to see how cute the ducklings are.

      @@MoatCottage Thanks so much - we have our first hatch in the "maternity suite" for the time being until they are larger. At what age do you sell/rehome the ducklings? We aren't going to keep them all but not sure how long they should stay with mama. Thanks again!

    • @MoatCottage
      @MoatCottage  Před 4 lety +1

      Hello Rewilding Heart, congratulations on your first hatch, how exciting!
      For me it really depends on if the Mother is looking after the ducklings or not.
      Some Mums want to care for her babies for only a few (days or) weeks and other Mums can be months.
      The ducklings are robust for my (winter) weather and predators at 5 to 6 weeks but if you were giving them to a home that wanted to look after them themselves and have them somewhere safe, warm, where they’re not going to drown in deep water etc, then ducklings can be hand raised, so any time.
      Ducklings make life long bonds with the siblings/ other ducks of similar age that they grow up with, so I alway make sure they are with a few friends if I do re- home any. 🐣
