Shaping Public Opinion: Crash Course Government and Politics #34

  • So today Craig is going to talk about where our political opinions come from. Of course, most people’s politics are grounded in their ideologies, but there are also other external influences such as the government itself, interest groups, and the media. So we're going to talk about how these influencers factor into the overall public opinion and how their roles have changed over time. Now this stuff may seem like common sense, but it’s important to know where our opinions come from, especially when you consider how quickly the media landscape is changing.

    Protip: if you meet someone asking for signatures on a petition, the only question they are LEGALLY REQUIRED TO ANSWER TO ANYONE WHO ASKS is "Who is paying you to stand out here and ask for signatures?"
    Often that tells you a heck of a lot more about the petition than anything the person standing there could say.

How they frame certain issues and how much they seem to get wrong makes me trust that what they say on the whole is not worth my time. They choose a way to frame &/or prime a subject/piece for a reason, I'd love it if you'd break down those reasons and help educate more people on how to think critically about how/why the media is showing them certain news pieces in a specific way. I mean, this is a series on US Government, and the bald eagle is the symbol of our nation--and by extension, our government. • @suddenwall
    @suddenwall Před 8 lety +1

    Great video, but I have a few notes:
    1) Ideologues
    Ideologues are the tiny tiny fraction of informed voters who affect the opinions of those they are in contact with. We all like to think we're informed but really only a small minority of the electorate are. We can all argue whether or not Joe the everyman conservative/liberal has accurate opinions, but the fact is that his opinions affect those in his social circle. This is always factored in when analyzing public opinion, especially on a local level.
    2) Gas Prices:
    You said that key policies e.g. Obamacare are affected by economic conditions. That is totally true! However, current comprehensive analyses of macroeconomic standing by qualified economists do not accurately predict public opinion. When it comes to opinion on any policy headed by a major figure like the president, public opinion on that policy and on that official vacillate according to gas prices. Seriously, go to gallup's website and plug in the variables. When presidential approval ratings are up, the approval stats for their policies also increase. However both presidential and presidential policy approval go up and down depending on the price of gas. The delay is usually between a few days and 2 weeks.
    P.S. There are exceptions such as the major ratings boost leaders get in wartime, right after election etc. Controlling for those variables, you'll see that gas prices are the greatest predictor of authority-initiated public policy opinion.
    3) The Undecided
    It really comes down to the 10% in the United States. Most people have made up their minds ideologically. Whether they truly think a policy is wise or not, most people stick to their party or ideological identity. However about 1/10 people are genuinely thoughtful and vote with up-to-date judgement. THEY are the target of manipulative ad campaigns, not the general public.
    Edit: Also there's also methodology! People 35 and younger generally don't answer phone questionnaires and don't participate in long-study online public opinion studies! Thus we can't get a good idea of how effective the methods in your video are. Public opinion research has the unfortunate nature to skew towards the opinions of pensioners.

    The media seeks to manipulate -- it's as easy as that! They want to shape the opinions of most people to try and form some sort of consensus; too much variation among the people leads to conflict and hindrances to progress. The media also sets the standard on what is acceptable and safe to agree or disagree with, and people generally follow their lead.
