      There was a HEAT shell developed for the ML-20, but it only saw service after the war. During the war the gun only had HE and AP ammunition.

    Considering how you described the use of the SU-152, wouldn't it be more correct to consider it a mobile fire support gun? Afaik (mobile) artillery operates much further from the front line and uses indirect fire. Furthermore, the limited gun elevation on the 152 meant that the SU-76 had a greater maximum firing range.

    More armor on the ISU-152. So maybe that's why they can be closer to the front?

      It was probably more to do with an adjustment to overall tactical doctrine, but obviously the additional armour doesn't hurt either.

    Oh, no there were SPG manufactured right before SU-152, it was designed and build in 1942 and called SU-122(not to confuse with IS tank based TD that was designed and build in 1944) and used M-30 122mm howitzer gun. SU-152 was also designed as a counter measure for German heavy tank Tiger I that was captured under Leningrad. So SU-152 was a dual purpose SPG, as a TD and indirect fire support. One of the reasons why you could not "dilute" or single out SU-152, because in case of enemy heavy tanks counterattack SU-152 would use a "salvo" directed at the most dangerous tank, to nullify their long reload time.

      No, the M-30 122 had a short barrel and was made to fight infantry in 1941-42
      The Su-122 is based on the T-34 and would lead to the Su-85

    • @RussianThunderrr
      @RussianThunderrr Před měsícem

      @@akriegguardsman -- Not just infantry, but anything heavy howitzer is used for... The idea was to make heavy howitzer as SPG that can keep up with T-34(it was a very fast tank), and meant to fire over and in front of those tank, while T-34 charging enemy lines. The "norm" alternative of those 122mm howitzers was moved around by tow-tractor called "Stalinetz" with speed of infantry, and that was not "cutting mustard" in fast developing situation of front lines breakthrough where T-34 tanks were used to lead that breakthrough.

    • @Klovaneer
      @Klovaneer Před 6 měsíci +1

      Remember it's supposed to hit clearly defined (either by the SPG or observers) targets in combined arms battle, so probably no farther than 3 kilometres, while the towed ML-20 with three times the elevation that should be used for general shelling had a range of 17km.
