Projectionists: The Men In The Shadows | 101 Traces | Unique Stories From India

  • Mumbai's Liberty Cinema is one of the last few screens that still uses the reel projector, and the men who operate it.
Back in the day, watching a video involved a lot more than just pressing the play button. It took practice and skill to correctly load a reel into the projector and make sure the show went on uninterrrupted. For decades, Aslam has been the man in the shadows at Mumbai's Liberty Cinema, pouring his love for cinema into the art of running the reel. But with the growth of the multiplex and the digital film, art deco cinemas like Liberty have had no choice but to 'upgrade' to modern technology. Somewhere along the way, the art and science that is the projectionist's trade may just be lost forever.
101 Traces looks at the last of anything: ethnic communities, folk craftsmen, disappearing trades, forgotten people. It sketches portraits of these unique individuals, locked in a battle they cannot win: a battle against the future. Together, they represent the dying whispers of ancient heritage and traditional individuality. As India moves towards homogenized global pop culture, 101 Traces honors the people, the objects, and the skills that connect us to our ancient identity.

Even today, if anyone sees film projection and digital projection side by side, not a single person will choose digital projection. Film projection was so easy on the eyes and the colors were mesmeric. Nowadays when suddenly from a dark scene the movie switches to a bright daylight shot the eyes almost hurt and the tack sharp frames fall short of the beautiful highlight roll off films used to offer. Sadly in India, producers shape the craft and not the artists. So no cinematographer was asked once before the industry decided to switch abruptly to digital. I hope 3-4 boutique theatres crop up in India and keep film projection alive just like the ones in LA.

This makes me realize that soon enough Streaming services like Netflix will take over the current projection industry
Nice video tho, the only place I've seen the old projectors are in the movie scenes only - this was a nice watch
Edit: you guys could do a similar video with Rikshaw-walas after the Cab companies came in

Two Carbon Arc Change-over 35 mm film Projectors were the real sturdy machines that projected films for decades and the mechanical system to threading of a film was fascinating. The digital system no matter how simple it is to use is still a video projector using mostly DLP technology. There is no film at all it is just a hard drive or files that contains the video, and a computer server that's all, and the file is beamed through a video DLP projector. Excellent Documentary but quite saddening.
