Free Shipping seemed to be more interested in playing with Spitfire rather that Texas Twister for the first part of that fight

I think he was trying to help light Spitfire's pilot flame. You'll notice that Spitfire kept firing the flamethrower whenever it was close to Free Shipping's arm.
The tentative start to the fight was weird. Like TT was having radio/failsafe issues and nice guy Gary waited for them to start working again.
I think Gary was trying to go after the drone and TT was letting him do it. Would've been a fiery sequel to the a-rakening
@@jonathangears I thought that at first, but he never tried to flame it or particularly waggled the forks at it. The shadow of the drone also makes it seem like it was less close than it appears. Either way, kind of looks like a semi-exhibition match that happened after both were out of tournament contention.
It just never ends for Spitfire, does it...

Gary Gin and Fuzzy Mauldin, two legendary battlebots characters and veterans of the sport, duke it out here and now.
Gary weirdly cautious at the start but eventually did the unthinkable and messed with Texas.
He was trying go for the drone, which is why Texas Twister wasn't attacking him either.
I wanted Gary to flame spitfire out of the sky so bad!
SAME! Since spitfire has a fire fluid box somewhere, it would have caught fire and really put in a show!

The thing that I took away from this fight is the effectiveness of Free Shipping's front blade as a defence against horizontal spinners. Very impressive. A lot of bots have sloped wedges or simple angled fronts, but Free Shipping had gone for a complete sculpted 'bulldozer profile' build.
Although it wasn't perfect, that top curl was very effective at unsettling Texas Twister's balance. It showed that it's possible to attack horizontal spinners aggressively, rather than just hang back and hope to survive them. Using the curved blade profile for rear and side armour might pay dividends if you could keep the weight down. Hmm. 1/2" rolled titanium, anyone?
I'd be interested to see how a heavier (hardox, not titanium) scoop stood up to powerful vertical spinners like Witch Doctor and Bite Force. Sadly, it'd probably come down to whose articulated feeder wedges got stuck in the arena floor first. Rats. Not a great way to decide a match.
Finally Free Shipping fights a horizontal spinner, it was built to neutralise weapons like this

It was the builder's daughter for the first time. She didn't do well, but cool for the family for doing something together, I guess.
@@gakk8658 Driving an angled horizontal is difficult due to the gyroscopic forces. One wrong turn and the bot is out of control.

I hope not. I want this to go longer than that, the reboot goes maybe 10 seasons.
Matches are usually in California around March-April and then expect it to air around June-July. They have not otherwise confirmed anything last I checked.

I wonder how a drone based battlebots would work out. (IE, where touching the ground is a penalty). Any ideas/flaws on this idea?
I think it's a good idea (in that battery and motor technology is ready for it), but you'd have to do a lot of research to make the fights meaningful. The physics of aerial combat is tricky to make entertaining. With no heavy armour, no big spinning weapons, no wedges, no flippers, and no floor leverage available, it'd be hard to do much more than crash into each other and hope for the best!
If you've ever seen two big birds of prey fighting in mid air, all they can do is swoop about and slash at each other with their talons. They don't usually grab on and exchange blows because they'd plummet out of the sky; I think two drone-bots would have the same limitation.
A drone does give a great stable weapon platform, though. Hovering is what they do best - but how do you attack another drone? Using lasers and reflective targets is clever, precise, fair and clean, but (IMHO) it's pretty boring to watch. Flash. Bleep. Yawn. Fun to do, maybe, but not great television. I suppose you could fire dummy missiles and try to take out the other bot's propellers...
You'd have to shroud the props for protection, but what else could you do to attack? Mount a lance on each bot and joust like knights on horseback? Or use flame weapons, maybe, to melt plastic propeller blades? Entanglement devices? I'm not sure kinetic weapons would be very effective because the recoil would wreck both drones.
Whatever. I think you should get together with a few mates and work on your idea. Who knows - you could be the guy who invents a whole new class of combat robotics!
@@EleanorPeterson I have tried to 'play' with 2 drones last night and I have to say.
Aerial combat sucks. They slightly hit each other and fall to the ground. You are right. It is boring to watch.
Another example of an angled weapon being completely ineffective. Ghost Raptor is the other example.

War Hawk's minibot War Stop played a role in its win over Overhaul in 2018.
The mini bot from the Nuts 2 bot in robot wars was quite effective as well.

Complete control is about the only one I've seen use flame effectively. Not really a cutting torch though
