My gut says she will!! 2019 is her year. I am routing for her. Of course I'm cheering on Biles and my team USA, but right now? I truly believe if melanie hits everything she should be on that podium and possibly silver position (which is course is gold in Biles-era WAG)

My old GP carried on just like him....his thing was racehorses.....u cud gp in4 ur app about say, a flu, and he wud b shouting about racehorses!!! He also declared war on the local hospital and said some of the consultants were useless!!! Few times u wud go into the surgery and he cud be heard on the phone berating some poor unfortunate junior doctor 😂😂!!! He was livid when my mum came home after a stroke....he hated Mums consultant with a vengeance, and to annoy him, wud automatically change all the meds. However, the consultant cottoned on to that, and told the chemist that there were to be no changes to her meds, unless he approved it!!! U can imagine how my GP reacted!! 😂😂😂

Him and Christine and Barry Davis were a great trio. Two professionals and a man who saw the human side of the sport, Davis brought a different outlook to the commentary.
I am a U. S. American, and I just want to say I really appreciate these good commentators. Detailed, fair and thorough, I enjoyed watching this video without so much bias and uncalled for hype such as American commentators are prone to. Thank you for wonderful gymnastics video content.
So glad to have Matt Baker back in the commentation room as well as presenting the gymnastics broadcast again. He adds more passion and makes competitions more interesting. And love his light-hearted jokes and relaxed yet passionate commentation that brings more popularity for this beautiful sport. And Christine Still has been a huge contributor and a coach for British gymnastics and broadcasting qualities. We miss Mitch Fenner. RIP.

A 12.9 would have been a disaster routine score going back a few years lol. Just last quad I remember when Menikova and Tukhalyan would fall they'd still score like 13. 8 hahaha.
I think this is due to them shifting the difficulty down for everything, because people are constantly doing harder and harder skills they have to keep the scores around the same mark so I find that when people start posting 7s on any thing they bring the start scores down a bit. I don’t have proof of this cause and effect but I know the COP changes every few years and I assume this is why

When Ellie Downie misses her handstands on bars it gives me anxiety. I can’t imagine how the judges must feel.
I think she is a tremendous gymnast, love her, but her bars seem very "choppy" to me. After re-watching many of her UB routines, I'm wondering if she actually has the bars set very loose and it gives her that extra "bounce"? Idk. Not trying to knock her. She is a taller gymnast and just does amazing...its just the UB thing
She is great on bars but not confident, maybe it is where she feels the comparison to her sister
@@emmyjo720 possibly. I think maybe, like many, (Haha like many Americans ie: Raisman, Sacramone, skinner, etc) she just doesn't have a natural swing. It comes across as choppy and very "un"smooth (lol I doubt that's a word)! 😂 But she makes it work for her AA program, and puts up good scores when she hits. Ps..I used Americans as examples because I "am" American and don't want to come across as biased (and an American bashing any gymnast on UB is just laughable, I know)!!
Either way, I'm glad that she is back. She is one tough cookie!! After that fall at her last worlds...not only did she try to continue her routine....it was as if she cracked her neck and said BAM! LETS DO THIS! I have a ton of respect for this young lady!!
@@jojox9791 Ellie is a vault and floor gymnast and AA...Becky has always been bars and beam...she has been our first world class beamer and now we have some beautiful beam workers..Ellie had problems with qualifying on bars, Amelie clearly isn't ready and Alice has only just ungraded her routine. Claudia was floor only, and replace Kelly who is injured as is very good on bars. I am British but I also love the gymnasts from France, Italy, Germany, Netherlands and Belgium. It is all very competitive...These Euros seems like France v GB all the way through.
@@jojox9791 her bar routine looks labored, yet i understand she's not a natural bar worker like her big sis Becky. She's similar to Jordyn Weiber/ Aly Raisman who are rockstars on the vault/floor but have difficulty with bars

I can't believe that the best europe gymnast was a France, I guess that Melnikova lost the gold medal for her technical mistakes, Russia should to work more, more and more because I miss the Russian Gymnast in the high of the podium.
I also miss the Romanians up there. (And I'm American) It just isnt the same without the battle.

L. Vega - That's because she herself butchers the names. Listen to her long enough and you'll see. The fellow already butchered "Buchinska" pronouncing it "Bashneeka" instead. For all the time they spend commentating, they simply are too damned lazy to check on competitors' names before competitions. Americans are just as bad, except when Nastia Liukin joins the commentating team.
@@tacksscherbo7771 I agree, it's like they don't even try lol. American commentators are just lazy with names. Like you said, though, Nastia doesn't butcher names. Most ex-gymnasts are good with pronouncing names, Tim not so much.
Nicole - We often called that "dynamic duo" Dragon and Troutwit here at home instead of Daggett and Trautweig. Daggett was mercilessly insulting about Svetlana Khorkina whenever that gal competed. He didn't have the brains to see how she personally responded to Americans. She had great respect for our gymnasts and America and Americans in general. In fact, when her child was due to be born, she flew to California to have it to be sure it got the best medical care. Her personality may have seemed unpleasant at times, but it was because she was a very proud gal and realized her gymnastic career was coming to an end and regretted it. I remember one time one of our reporters accosted her for an interview. The first thing she said to the reporter was telling her how her name is pronounced. She apparently used to listen to the commentaries, and as a proud Russian gal, took a bit of a burn about it being pronounced "Corkina." She said her name was pronounced with "H" "Horkina" she said about three times. When she said that, I knew I would thoroughly like that lady. Her father's name meant a great deal to her and she wanted it correct for the record.

Not only that, you took the very example right out of my mouth, Khorkina! Liukin was not only born in the USSR, but speaks fluent Russian at home, has stated Khorkina to be her favourite gymnast on several occasions, but on all of them that I've ever seen pronounces her name as "Cor-kina"--which drives me mad. (an exmaple is at 0.57 of this interview she did with Shawn Johnson at the Rio games - czcams.com/video/PA_8MFnAFEM/video.html).
But nothing, and absolutely nothing will top the way Americans insist on butchering Nadia Comaneci's surname, which is NOT Co-ma-neech, it's Com-a-netch. (for those curious, this is from her wikipedia page - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ro-Nadia_Com%C4%83neci.ogg)
Yes, BBC commentators are bad at times, but that's the English with foreign names for you! However, they do attempt to improve, e.g Larisa Iordache's name. in 2013 and 14 they were still saying "yordash," but by 2015 they had corrected themselves. Likewise with Matt Baker's butchering of poor Artur Dalaloyan's surname (esp as he's such a big fan of the guy)!

Anyone knows what happened to Romania? After the last change on their program their strength started to dissolve away. After the retirement of Kata Ponor and Larissa Iordache I completely lost track of them.

The gymnasts in Romania have had a lot working against them in recent years. I just read an article that talked about their decline, I wish I could remember where it was from so I could provide a link...It's really, really sad though. I do know that they've got some really amazing juniors right now so I hope we start seeing more of them. We probably won't for a while though. So weird not seeing them at any of these major competitions, they've been such a huge part of gymnastics for so many years.
A lot of it is financial, the rest is political. Gymnastics isn’t being supported by the government, but there is some hope now. They have a couple of great new prospects.
It is embarrassing to hear how Christine Still and Craig Heap regularly butcher gymnasts' surnames. Oftentimes, they are not even difficult surnames to pronounce at all. Take some time and show respect to people's family names.
The British are notoriously bad at foreign names it's the differences of Anglophone linguistics (namely the pronounciation of vowel sounds) in comparison to pretty much everywhere else in the world (Europe, Africa, Asia). Also the cadence of how say them, which is odd sometimes because they can say Shaposhnikova but not Melnikova :/...But I do agree that as professionals at their level with access to google translator/CZcams etc even though they don't know who will be featured on film esp during the AA for EF they should absolutely learn the names properly. But they do generally correct themselves over time (off camera) eg how they used to Petro Pahkniuk's surname as Pak-u-nik or just stumble and fall at De Jesus dos Santos!

@@MD-722 The BBC commentators are especially bad though, they always have been. For all the flack NBC gets, they at least TRY, even if they get certain inflections and the like a bit off. No one expects perfect Russian or French accents lol. I remember for the longest time Christine was pronouncing Giulia Steingruber as Yulia lol. Like, trying so hard to be accurate as Julia pronounced by Germans IS Yulia, but Giulia is an Italian name lmao pronounced like English Julia. It's something about Brits. I watch figure skating and the British Eurosport commentators are really bad with names too. Yet, the way more annoying than gymnastics NBC commentators - the figure skating ones again, attempt to get it closer to correct pronunciation. It's one thing to get it wrong, but why not after years do they not try? They still can't pronounce Mustafina lmao.
They are the original English country not America. The world should be following the British pronunciations. Americans just like to change things *and always think they are right toma--to not to--ma--to.
I just don't get why gymnast are so inconsistent now doing skills that were perfected over 20 years ago. For example a back handspring to layout stepout on beam or a full twisting yurchenko.
The beam I can understand, but Yurchenko, I'm with you 100% on esp as they have an actual table to vault off
Beam is all about connections. No hesitations and they have zero set up room. I despise this code for this gor 2 reasons. 1. Too many injuries. 2. Too many errors, as if they are rushed rushed and rushed.
I think the answer has to do with the ABSURD race towards difficulty. They spend hours increasing the difficulty instead of investing their time in perfecting the simple skills. Plus no compulsories. And judges are more lenient in the e score with gymnasts who do harder routines, so it is not really true that you can balance execution with difficulty
It is all about difficulty. Specially when Simone competes with her crazy D score standard.
Most gymnasts do a vault to get by in the AA, so there are fewer specialists. Ellie,

The British commenting panel is a bit more diplomatic compared with the US panels, but sometimes I don't think our American pickiness is always a good thing. The British commenters are like "small step back" and I'm like "and a HUGE step backwards, let's see what that will cost her"

Asymmetric bars : why are they so boring ? Compared to what Olga, Nadia used to do in the 70s it was so interesting and original. Other aparatus got more and more challenging and interesting over the years but not this one....

The bars are spaced wider that they were before, so the gymnasts can't perform the same moves. I thought that was widely known, I guess I was mistaken.
@@mariam__x Yep, I know that. I understand that they can't do the same moves. It doesn't change the fact that they could be more original. Most girls do the same routine, and it's a lot of turns and handstands... Sure it looks super physical and hard to perform but... also boring
@@macrocosmique gymnasts are following the code of points. Original routines sometimes don't build start-values to be in medal contention, and would be a waste of time if the gymnast is not consistent and have form issues that would result in a lower execution score. Some skills in the 70's-90's are banned, impossible to do since the asymmetric bars changed so it's not the gymnast's fault they can't be performing skills like Olga did. Original routines with high difficulty puts the athlete at risk for injury and that can ruin their dreams to go to the Olympics. Even if the routines are "boring" to you, they are still winning medals. THe gymnasts should not be putting themselves at risk to entertain you

Why did Diana Varinska and Giorgia Villa get such low execution scores on UB?
Giorgia had form deductions/ leg separation between transitions and there was an error on the low bar while she was pirouetting therefore adding extra kip to handstand
I wondered the same about Diana. I felt like she was underscored.
Scratching my head with some of the comments regarding Ellie....she nailed her beam routine?? Really! Yes she's got the power but there should be more to it that.
She is just back after 18 months, two ankle surgeries...She is not our most elegant beam worker, she is best on vault and floor.
I thought the same. "Nailed" is not the word I'd use, but I often notice Still & co. hyperbolizing with respect to team GB athletes.
It seems like the British commentators have a hard time controlling their emotions when a British gymnast is performing.

She wanted to focus more on world Championships. She has nothing to prove on the European Championship stage, its also good to give new belgium senior gymnasts to gain some competition experience

I know it was answered but I will try to give a bit more detail. Penalties are only given for stepping out of bounds on vault or floor, for a coach touching the gymnast on bars and for being ove the time limit on beam and floor

The American Cup is a completely different competition, and is open to gymnasts from all over the world. The European championships are open to European gymnasts.

Another year the second year Ive watched the European women gymnastics championship and I feel a little disappointed not only my cry for more diversity felled on deaf ears hell its One less short French than last year .Perhaps its my broken GHETTO FRENCH OUI, OUI nevertheless I'm over it even if the winner Oui my choice would not had won I got more than those that paid oui the field was lacking some talent .I might have to import some diversity from here to there at European expense.

Tourischeva and Kim looked like healthy women like most of these gymnasts. Nadia and Korbut were STARVING. Given the high likelihood of eating disorders in this sport it's very disturbing that people make such ignorant comments.
Actually this is the way women looked when women's gymnastics was in its infancy.
Have you not heard of Larissa Latynina or Vera Caslavska? Those are the legends of gymnastics and they had full figures, which is nice compared to the anorexic, starved bodies that came during the late 70s through the 90s.

I don't understand how some of these girls are so big. Their legs are so beefy. I don't work out half as much as they do and my legs are half the size. They must be eating a lot!

These days with difficulty being so important, the gymnasts have gotten bigger (more muscle). It's not as easy to do the power events if you're a twiggy waif like the old Russian girls of the 1990s.
