  • This is the twentieth lesson in a series of lessons using Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method, Grade 1 as our primary source of instruction. This lesson focuses on page 26 (page 49-50 expanded edition). Page 26 teaches two songs including "Shenandoah" and "Blue Bells of Scotland". This page tends to hang people up when they hit it. It is a significant jump in the series in terms of difficulty BUT it is totally in reach. I offer some practical ideas to get on the right track for practice that will help you be successful with this page. Take your time, be patient with yourself, and apply these practice techniques and you'll do great! Have fun! As usual, please ask if you have questions. Enjoy!
    I will include timestamps below for the different concepts discussed in the lesson.
    This series is intended to be a companion resource to your study in Mel Bay's method. It is NOT intended to replace the book. To be successful with this video series you will NEED to purchase a copy of Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method Grade 1

    I always felt like the a minor chord came a hair faster following the C than expected in my head. Ba Bum da da da when I was following the accompanying cd and just is you are properly playing. I'm revisiting this, I love that your doing this series. Do you think you will be going past grade 2? It's a bucket list thing for me to complete the Grades someday. I understand if you choose not to. But this great. I'm actually supplementing with the Berklee Levitt series. But that kind of blows through the keys really fast. I like the way Mel Bay covers a couple of keys a grade, so that you really absorb them before moving I was just wondering if your going to move on to grade 3 etc. Perhaps there may or may not be an audience for that it. I'm probably a bit more advanced than a lot of your audience but I love this. Thank you for doing this.

    Hello and thank you for these lessons. On both of these songs there are notes wherein you strum only two notes but at the same time. For example the F and the A rather than the entire F chord. I play with a pick and it's easier for me to play the entire F chord by using the barre since I can strum without worrying about strumming adjacent strings by accident. Can you advise how I can practice plucking only two strings at the same time without accidently plucking the adjacent strings?

    Hi Nick - Love your videos. They are so super helpful! Quick question - what tempo should we try to work up to on Shenandoah? I see you did 60bpm in the video, but at what tempo can we say okay we’ve got this down? Thanks so much!

      Most music is pretty flexible with tempo and can performed at a variety of speeds. Something you can do is find a version of the song you like on youtube, or spotify, or a similar streaming service and check the tempo with a metronome. Many metronomes have a tap tempo feature where you can tap a tempo withy our finger and it tells you how fast it is. I use an app called "TapThatTempo" just for this purpose. I just pulled up a few versions of Shenandoah on Spotify and they all floated in the 60 bpm realm. I found one as slow as 50 and another as fast as 70 but most were floating around 58, 60, 66, etc... All that being said, I think 60 is definitely a performance-ready tempo unless you personally like the song a little faster, in which case you can certainly build the tempo a little more if you'd like.

      Nick Tolman Music thank you very much for the thorough and thoughtful reply! I am going to try that tap the tempo app...sounds very useful. Thanks, again!

    I am learning this song. The f note and a note sound akward together to me?

    • @NickTolmanMusic
      @NickTolmanMusic  Před 3 lety +2

      F and A shouldn’t sound awkward together. There are a couple of things that might be happening. One is maybe your guitar is out of tune? Also, just double check to make sure you have your fingers in the right place. If this problem persists feel free to come over to my new Facebook group facebook.com/groups/melbayguitarsupport here you can ask more questions or even send a video of yourself playing so we can see what’s going on with this f and a! Best of luck in your practice!
