the problem is zoning: Since zoning first took root in the early twentieth century, it has invariably been used to enforce and perpetuate a uniquely American form of apartheid, shrouded in a fog of planning jargon and obtuse code. While you will find no mention of race or class in your contemporary local zoning ordinances, the open pursuit of American apartheid forms the basis of many zoning codes still in effect today. Yes, the courts clamped down on de jure racial zoning in 1917, but court approval of economic zoning in 1926 would pave the way for de facto racial segregationâŠcities were quick to bring in renowned zoning framers who could provide legal cover for the same old exclusionary zoning codes. WE MUST ABOLISH ZONING. Then we have a true free market in real estate. "Zoning" should only apply to landfills and chemical plants
I feel like since Hawaii has such a finite amount of land it almost kinda makes sense for them to nix short-term rentals. I don't think the rest of the country will necessarily adopt this though.

Those "stupid neighbors" also pay taxes on their properties and its not fair for them to have to live with a loony house next to their house. You want to have one? Built it next to yours and problem solved.

Their rights are not more important than yours. Of course. But neither yours are more important. Also, if it were someone living long term being an idiot the neighbor can get into an understanding with the person and solve the problem. But what can they do with the revolving door of different people every time? It's impossible.
