- This video describes how to write, fold, and seal a letter in the 16th century style.
Folding and letterlocking techniques are largely drawn from the amazing resources at letterlocking.org
Likewise, Bess of Hardwick's Letters (www.bessofhardwick.org) provided a wealth of knowledge on the form and materials of letters of the period.
I also recommend these books for more information on the writing and sending of letters:
Daybell, James. _The material letter in early modern England : manuscript letters and the culture and practices of letter-writing, 1512-1635_. Houndmills, Basingstoke, Hampshire New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2012.
Stewart, Alan, and Heather Wolfe. _Letterwriting in Renaissance England_. Washington, D.C. Seattle: Folger Shakespeare Library Distributed by University of Washington Press, 2004.

"Secret love letters, or spycraft." Nice touch.
That was great !!! Thank you for your time & interest in days gone by - when people had style, values & standards. I myself smoke a tobbacco pipe & dress "fancy" to promote the goodness of the days of yore ! 😂😂😂❤❤❤❤

Beautiful work!
Thank you this video!
Love the curtains you are wearing
I understand that modern sorting equipment will not scan properly envelopes smaller than the standard size most commonly available. It is also not unusual for undersize letters to be unreturnable to sender. Sad for sender and intended recipient. Perhaps inserting your carefully constructed letter, as small as you, like then mailing in a regular size envelope to insure delivery. The post mark will not appear on the 13:04 missive, but it at least reaches your intended correspondent. It is a pleasure listening to your narrative while watching your loving construction.
Do wax seals really survive in the postal system nowadays?
I haven't sent a lot through the mail, but from what I've read they stand a good chance of surviving intact. For better results you can add a second enclosing envelope to better protect the seal.
@@justincase2071 good to know, thanks!
Most, though not all, wax for letter sealing nowdays is a little flexible so that it works with the automated postal systems.
@@peteyfrogboy one of our postal workers told us that all "Media mail" is opened to check to make sure it is actually media. Totally illegal. Unconstitutional.
