Accountable, Self-aware, discipline, respect, team-work, togetherness.....These are the things that I learned from basketball and being part of a team. These boys are fortunate to be associated with something like this. It teaches them how to be a decent person and good member of society. Great series!

As a former teacher at Central High School, I am glad that the world can now see what has become "common" to many who pass through the doors of CHS and the neighborhoods that produce players like this... I have been sharing with Coach McCray, "OG... You gotta be the guiding light, and if you got 'em, you gotta guide 'em right..." This is what it is about about -guiding them right. Great work!

I fell in love with this documentary not because it's truthfully depicting where I was born and raised (and presently live); but because not just our youth, but ALL of the world needs to see positive actions instead of negative. This sheds a light on how we push, pull, and have an insatiable fight to live, surface, and thrive through the muck and mire; to beat the odds of poverty, death, and all the oppressive aspects and effects as result of other's bad decisions which affects the entire city. Thing is, all inner cities have similar stories. Newark, NJ has a rich history; and presently, not only tragedies, but there are very good aspects that happens as well! My heart goes out to Quan Quan. His family puts so much pressure on him to "take them out of the hood"..He is a child, and it is not his responsibility to support his entire family financially! At any rate... Beautiful documentary about the natives and spirit of Newark, NJ. I'm subscribed!

I don't who the Director or Cinematographer for this Series is, but goddamn man. That shot where it just shows the kid looking as name after name gets called is one of the most beautiful and emotional shots I have ever seen. I'm not joking or exaggerating at all. I attend LA Film School and we study the emotions of various shots and that one is BY FAR the greatest one I have ever seen. There's no cuts, no edits, nothing. Just one camera pointed at that young man as he hopes to hear his name called. His dream of making the team shrinks with every name he hears. We have no idea if he made it or not, so we're hoping and praying he makes it also. What's amazing is that we don't even know his name yet. So every time we hear a name, it could be his. We would have no idea. So we're all focusing on his face because if a name is called and he starts smiling or walking towards center court, we know he's made it. LIterally had me emotional. Such a beautiful shot. AMAZING WORK!

I really learned from this. I've been interested in basketball since 2016. Never played in a real game until 2018. I played for the Amite County Lady Trojans in the middle of the season. Coach seen me play in the gym during P.E. and after P.E. she called me to the side and spoke to me about the game they were going to have the following day. She asked me would I like to play in the game... the first thing I said was, "No thanks, my dad doesn't have any gas at the moment." I felt terrible saying something like that but the truth tells no lies. && growing up, I had neither a mom or dad and I was adopted by my aunt and uncle. It gave me no other option then to play Basketball. I feel like what they didn't do, I can do. I feel like what they failed to do, I can successfully do. I have been suspended from school once but growing up I had no option but to defend myself and that's what I did and I know, the mistake I made CAN effect my Basketball dreams. Many people say I have a lack of knowledge, vocabulary and future. But in the end, I only have myself. I have an older sister and yes she pushes me to do better than her, but where are my parents? Trust me,, I can relate to many people's stories. I might not have heard all of your stories, but now you know mine. Thank you sooo much for sharing this with us!

Love documentaries like this. I just hate how his aunt kept repeating “get us out the hood”, “get me a big house”, “get us outta here”...Damn, she chose her road why is it so much pressure on him to do for you what you should have done for yourself. Instead why not encourage him to do better than what’s around you rather it be basketball or a different road. That’s the problem with the black family. We tend to use people as a meal ticket. We put so much pressure on top of the current pressures of everyday life on one person. That’s why some of us don’t make it. His concern should be him. Getting himself out the hood, getting himself a big house not a big house for auntie, uncle and pookie them...

Real talk for the last year, almost 2....Ive been really interested but on the fence with getting in a league to coach soccer. Myself playing soccer growing up as a kid, I've felt the victorious feeling of joy that winning a game brings. Ive witnessed hardships, blood and tears, the impossible made possible, adrenaline fueled excitement, first hand life lessons all being achieved when successfully overcoming obstacles as a team and now thinking and looking back, a family. Now that im grown up, The Joy a Coach must feel knowing through practice, exhibitions & ranked tournament, He himself was able to unlock each one of his players limitless potential for their future, all by using a sport they've all come to love. It brings unforgettable life long memories that each team player including the coaches, all their parents and close spectators will cherish and hold dear to themselves forever. Thats the feeling in the back of my head as a grown up that makes me want to experience building a sports family with new fresh memories all over again this time occurring from the opposite angle... The Coach.

At 18:05 It’s wrong for a parent to raise her child only for their own benefit.
They should make sure that their kid grows up to be a man or woman who can get a good enough job to support a family.
Parents shouldn’t tell their child that they have to get a reeeaaally high paying job to buy them a bigger house and luxury.
If the child chooses to go and get a really good job, then let him or her do so. But do not make it a priority.

My hope for this series is that these kid's stories stop being just white noise. For Quan Quan at 16 years old to say, "My father has never been in my life. My brother is in and out of jail. It all falls on me"... is just insane. For Ze to say, 'I've lived in 10 different homes in the past couple of months".. puts me beside myself. So many of OUR youth have struggles similar to theirs and it's OUR job to not just support them but more importantly, to make it OUR responsibility to help them rise. To inform and show them that regardless of their circumstances, they can rise above the BS and strive for excellence in this life just like everyone else. This series is about seeking change for our youth and letting the world know that this is a priority. This series has changed my life. OG, Principal Brown and all the incredible people who are on the ground floor working with these kids on a day to day basis are the true stars. I salute them for their relentless effort to impact change. My mother was in the educational field her entire career and would always say.. "Some kids don't even know what they can achieve bc they never had a chance before they even got started". Well I say this.... No more!!!!! It's OUR job to be better. It's OUR job to be more for OUR youth. They ******** deserve it. They deserve OUR best. #TheTimeIsNow
