  • The most surprising performance car ever?
The original Audi R8 shared its mid-engined platform with the Lamborghini Gallardo but combined it with Audi's own V8 petrol engine. Along with incredible styling, balanced handling, a lovely six-speed manual gearbox, and surprisingly easy manners, it made the R8 a true revelation when it was launched in 2006. In this CarGurus UK review Dan Prosser drives Audi UK's heritage R8 mk1 V8 manual and explains what makes it such a special car.

    Pros
    Stunning looks
Choice of coupe and convertible body styles
    Sensational to drive
    Cons
The V10 is not much quicker than the V8
Unsurprisingly, the R8 is very thirsty
Be aware of some high parts prices
    The CarGurus verdict
With the Porsche 911 now so ubiquitous that it’s next to invisible out on the road, the R8 makes a spectacular alternative for anyone wanting a supercar to use on a daily basis. Despite that usability, the Audi’s mid-engined configuration makes it feel and look exotic in the same way as a Lamborghini or Ferrari does, even if the R8’s cabin isn’t as special as those of the two Italians.
The driving experience is exceptional, with raging performance from all models accompanied by an evocative soundtrack. That the R8 is also largely reliable and can be serviced at your local Audi dealer, is a very welcome bonus in this lofty sector of the sports car market.

These early R8’s have aged really well. They make the latest cars look rather fussy. Relatively good value now too.
    Another great video from Dan.

Peak Audi. Glorious engines and design. A gated manual gearbox avaliable. Elegant exterior. The R8 has progressively gotten less attractive with each update.

Great video. I sold a recently acquired 996 Turbo to jump into one of these. Naturally worried id made a grave error, but these V8 R8's are truly special. The best complement I can give it is that it drives even better than our 981 !

Best looking Audi ever! Newer models wish they'd look this gorgeous, its design is timeless. It's been my dream car ever since it launched

Had one for just over 3 year. Fantastic cars, and still miss it today. Just a shame cars have gotten so fast and powerful, that there is no room for a V8 manual R8 today

Thinking of swapping my F80 M3 Competition for one of these. Don’t need the extra seats but undecided about going back 6-7 years for my daily driver.

Had a R8 for two years now, the tech is so outdated compared to a F80 Bmw. Performance (straight line) is pretty ordinary these days too but I don’t miss my M3. Such a rewarding car to drive on your favourite road/track.

If I had a lot of money and wanted to spend ~$200k on a car that isn't a Porsche.....R8 all day. NA V10 with great looks and some practicality and comfort. I honestly think the current gen has been completely lost because it is the modest Huracan....and doesn't make 800hp. If only it had a manual still, it would break the internet.

I would go for the v10 since the v8 does not even make 400hp so more looks than anything

Generally speaking, you are right. But, you've got to drive something, and, if you're a petrol head and can't afford or simply don't want to spend a small fortune for a super road car, the R8 is hard to beat as a value proposition. Sure, one should make sure one's priorities are in the right order, and also make sure to have a realistic maintenance/repair fund.
