Literally merson was one of the people saying get rid of Arteta. It’s actually so gross. Arteta didn’t almost relegate Arsenal. That’s the difference, if Aston Villa want to give him time it doesn’t mean they’ll just get relegated to league 2 in the name of protecting and English manager. Give harry maguire time, give Shaw time. Yet pogba got crucified and yet I bet you Ten Hag would love pogba in his squad. Pogba shimmies and makes a good pass like KDB, he doesn’t play a massive amount of defence yet was required to by Ole to cover McTominay and Fred constantly. See Liverpool don’t have a good passing midfielder they actually rely on players like Trent and Van Dijk to to do that, get the ball on the wing. It’s gross. Merson said get rid of Arteta, and I don’t doubt for a minute if potter had lost all of his matches they’d be saying give him time. He needs time.

He had 38 games and amassed a whopping 44 points. He has made Villa worse than when he joined, not just in terms of the league position, but the intangibles. He never connected with the fans, he alienated players from the squad, the Mings debacle was horrendous. The only reason the sacking is being questioned is because he's English and has a lot of mates in the media.

A lot of these comments are spot on. I used to support the 'old Rangers', gave up on them when they went bust. The new team is not my team, since I moved, nearly 20 years ago, I have devoted my support to Liverpool FC.
Gerrard is a big name, and that's it!
He is a cr@p manager. Before he won that league up there, he was blaming all sorts. He got schooled by Brendan Rodgers, for instance. He was a great player from 2000-2012. He's lived off that since. He is not clever, he is not tactical. He is a burden on any team who takes him on. Everyone at Rangers and Villa knows that 'the brains' were with Michael Beale!
If I was the Villa Board and I wanted to have a chance to restore old glories, I'd pick Mauricio Pochettino as my next manager.

It's interesting when Gerrard was at Rangers him and his backroom staff were trusted and the players and fans bought into everything Gerrard was saying in part no doubt because of his profile and reputation in the game and there was an improvement in our team especially against Celtic and in Europe, losing points against low blocks being the only obvious exception that stood out. Watching from afar I never saw other than the first few weeks the same sort of excitement at Villa from the fans and it doesnt appear the players either. I dont think Villa is a bad team and I dont think Gerrard is a bad manager, something though certainly didnt click however. Does anyone think egos and personal relationships have played a large part in this or is it just plain football tactics and player choices etc? Serious question for those interested in offering a view point as I certainly am intrigued.

Punditry as a concept is a joke and this is a perfect example. You get generalists with certain club affiliations with no real clue. Some of these have been managers, some elite players, some both and honestly in many cases that is the shock. How? Bottom line, assessing performance based on "oh this happened at another club in similar circumstances" or "oh they still would have met their objective as they had the time in the season" is as basic as it gets and then calling out fans who are the real experts of their clubs is frankly arrogant. From a fans perspective: Steven Gerrard got MORE time and protection than his performances deserved, not less. Over 38 games we had 11 wins. 3 of them came in his first 6 games. 9 of them last season. 4 of those 9 against 2 teams that were relegated. This season only 2 wins. 7 goals scored, a season low xG below 1 and less international call ups than when he inherited the squad. All indicators point towards a change so lets use these facts to control the narrative rather than the need to protect the iconic Steven Gerrard (who I admired massively as a player).

He spent 90 million on the players he wanted and made them worse! I agree with Merse that short-termism is a big problem in football, but as an arsenal fan Arteta both gave us more promise (the FA cup win, bringing in some really good players who immediately made us better) and is tactically so much better than Gerrard ever was in the prem.
