- I was going to do a totally different video this week but then I saw Cats and I have some thoughts.
Seriously if you guys have any ideas on how to make them look cuter let me know I wanna know how other people would tackle it.

Even the way their fur ruffles is expressive qwq

The thing that freaked me out was the fact that they had noses...human noses...

And their lips looked so bizarre especially if they had dark/red lips with light fur coats. It just didn't look good.

While I generally don’t approve of “Fixing” art, this is one case where I’m sure most of us can unanimously agree that there is an issue that needs to be assessed and fixed with the CATS designs.
I totally agree. Usually, "fixing" art is just critiquing and redesigning. But the Cats movie is kind of universally disliked, for the CGI or just in general.
@@nocarbonationtm21 How are you supposed to "fix" art without critiquing and redesigning?
keep in mind, this is a large studio's work that we're fixing, NOT an individual's work. that's the difference. it's one thing to fix, say, Disney's work, than to pick one artist on DeviantArt and "fix" their artwork.
edit: grammar
@@ndiyabucaphukelaubusobakho1732 I see as those who 'fix' art are people who make changes to accommodate their own biases. And when you claim to fix something, you immediately put your work on a higher pedastal to the original. Though not all of them are like this, but many.
Most art students pay for someone to "fix" our art, I dont really understand not being able to accept constructive criticism (not bashing the art) if Im drawing unporportionally or I can use a certain brush technique better Im alll ears, but if someone just says "that sucks its weird", doesnt help anyone. I mean if that was the case than why was Sonic successful after being re-conceptualized? Ya know what I mean?
It's honestly funny how the live action Cat in the Hat movie from 2003 made a better humanoid cat than Cats in 2019
Well I mean the cat in the hat is still horrific
The bar was so low and they dug a hole to avoid it.
I find the Cats cats much more approachable than the live Cat in the Hat. No idea why.
Cat in the hat live action haunted my dreams as a kid.
Honestly both are horrifying

Probably because 80% of the image was shit lol
They should have stayed as close to the actual musical, ie using makeup, wigs and fake fur, as possible and only used cgi to animate the tails and ears.
Lace Neil Yes! It would look better
In fact maybe just do a theatrical release of a professional recording
This was what I was hoping and had assumed they were gonna do when I first heard of the movie. Then I saw the pictures and trailers and.....just disappointed.
Yes that's exactly what they should have done, just animate the ears and tails so they can use the movements for more expression
(But keeping them a bit like just props maybe)
Yeah, and they should have made special clothes to look like fur but more fluffy so it doesn't look so naked QwQ
The sad part about Cats is my gran got excited to hear that they were making it into a movie! (She saw the musical in the 80's) and then felt so cheated with the shitty designs.

What bugged me the most was the inconsistency in character designs. Example: some had cat like noses while others did not. Some had fur clothes and some had regular clothes.
Stuff like that.
And some had no clothes. Nudist cats?
@@aussiewanderer6304 Well, they are suppose to be cats... nothing more and nothing less. My cats don't wear clothes.... most actual cats don't wear clothing so XD
Did you see the original? Some cats in it wear clothes and it's quite important
@@michelleschaefer683 I've seen a video taped version of the original. Some cats have clothes but they're used to accentuate distinct fur details and characteristics. They look like they're part of the body, like the leg warmers or the fur cloaks. In this film it's inconsistent because some of the clothing is actual clothing while others are part of the fur, which, for the film version, looks clumpy and weird. I personally think for the film version they should have had real clothing on the CG cats rather than weird CG clothing attached to the cats.
How did you read this thread and miss the entire point? Obviously we know about real cats. So then why do the cats wear clothes at all in the movie? Even after 3 years, reading comments like these irk me. @@shinigamikitty
How to successfully adapt Cats into a movie:
Step One: don't
Step Two: don't
Step Three: make it a cartoon
Step four: Respect your VFX artists
WRONG WRONG AND WRONG again cause if you were actually knowledgeable about the musical and understood the material it is based upon you would also know that according to A. L. W. when he approached T.S. Eliot's widow asking for permission to adapt the material into a musical she asked if they will make them like pussycats and he said no, then she replied " cause Disney had approached him ( T.S Eliot) about it and he refused, he didn't want them made into cartoony pussycats"
@@galadballcrusher8182 true, so maybe use costumes from the original musical. Or just do the animation in a style different from Disney, animation is a medium so just because they are animated doesn’t mean they have to be made “Pussy Cats”

I hate when people say "It's bad CGI"
It's not bad CGI, it's bad design
It's both. They didn't do their homework with clear plates and as usual calculated way too little time to finish the effects properly.
it's definitely both, the design is bad BUT the quality of the cgi is BAD too. there are people's feet going into the floor & the floor bending around them?, the head overlay moves weirdly sometimes, there's fur-face-overlays disappearing or a visible gap between the overlay and the actual face, etc etc. if you pay attention more and more flaws become painfully obvious. I agree that the design was the main flaw but the cgi is still embarrasing for a 2019 movie and it's mainly because they rushed this film into theatres when the special effects were nowhere near finished. I kind of feel bad for the cgi people who made this because you can see that they do have the skill but they just weren't given enough time to create a consistently good product, let alone a great one.
the design is part of the cgi
Like, did you see that water Bustopher Jones was drinking? The CGI was terrible. The proportions and design are all part of the CGI presentation. Was the CGI the only problem? No. Was the CGI also a major problem. Absolutely.
@@Quotenwagnerianer The director finished at the last minute. And no one didn't even saw it before the premiere. Like how can that happen? How can someone spend so much money yet keep editing till the last moment and still show the unfinished product?

This is so cool! It also would have been way less stress on the VFX department, I presume - giving them only seven months to perfect a completely new technique and apply it to an entire feature-length film is just not a thing that was ever going to end well, but only having to deal with the eyes/ears/maybe tails, plus the occasional non-cat effect that couldn't be done with practical effects, seems a lot more manageable.

Her designs kind of fall around the same body types, skin tones, and proportions. While I like her work, there is a lot she needs to improve on. Her shading is very heavy, and while better than I can do, it is not at a concept design level. I especially struggle with her body types. The facial features of her work are great. However, she tends to draw very thin characters. I’d like to see characters with different body types. I feel as though Lavender towne struggles with this.

It is almost like the people who designed the cats for cats had never actually met a cat
The director held them to unrealistic deadlines. They were given 7 months. Toy Story took 2 years.
The thing is, their design was intentional. They wanted us to be able to tell that Taylor Swift was Taylor Swift. And that Idris Elba was Idris Elba, etc, etc. They got so many big name actors in there, and they wanted to make sure we knew it. And that's why their faces are too human-like.
Or they took their inspiration from renaissance painters :D Look it up, don't thank me :p
@@oh-totoro TBH my approach would have been Alita meets anime catgirl. Use Alita like proportions and animations make them look less human, slap some cat ears on top and give em a floofy collar. Sure animating every single one with the precision and love for details that was used on Alita is a monumental job but considering how much time spent on furry buttcheeks is saved it might just be worth it.

Agreed, the noses were awful

olivia scorciolla yes! thats what i’ve been saying!
I didnt even dislike the cats design that much (yes, that nose idea would have helped alot) but what botherd me the most was the weird effects they used when jumping (them jumping extremely far) or the way they were tiny in that big world. It just looked really weird to me.
The first thing most people do when they put on a cat costume for Halloween it's draw on their noses and the whiskers. I cannot believe they forgot something so basic like that.
“Cats” can’t be “Cats” without the wigs, leg warmers, and spiky collars. Making things all cgi is never a good idea.
Narnia?
It came out years ago and is good as ever. Moviemakers these days are just lazy with design and movements. The Lion King live action remake would have been so much better if they hadn't used the "animals don't have facial expressions" excuse. It's not true and even if it was, it can be avoided with proper design.
@@emvuosku4219 Yeah. Like there was a news article about a lion who scared a photographer and then smiled/laughed at him. How does one come to the conclusion of "animals don't have facial expressions. Has the director never had a pet?

And I was hooked.
I loved all the "cheesy" 80s stuff in that medium because it worked with the theme and coupled with the acting & music, didn't seem "cheesy" anymore once you got immersed into the show.
That was great character & costume designing.
Plus they had alot wasted talent in this movie adaptation. The movie would have been cool if they kept some things real and still used CG.
@@irishime two things in the play that everyone talked about -- costuming and choreography, two things they wrecked in the film -- costuming and choreography.
Actually the design is already gud but the only thing that is wrong is the face
It would be better if the face is a real cat face and not human face
When I first heard about the cats movie I thought it would be like Aristocats style then I saw they trailer and I was sorely mistaken
I think that the masquerade masks would be a viable option on stage. one thing that you didn't mention that I think was key though, is the realistic coloring. Each cat on the stage musical is unique distinctive and instantly recognizable. The film gave them all realistic coat colorings, which ended up making them look very samey. They also increased the number of backup dancers, which lost the close-knit feel of the original. When you see bumble arena ever since seen one, when she has a solo in song seventeen, it feels more meaningful than if she just suddenly appears out of nowhere
This is something I would watch.
Savannah German ok
Yummy Phil boomer
Savanna German oh, wich one?
*is anyone wondering why the character design artists didn't catch these mistakes* ??
*Nope.* There's a HUGE number of people approving/disapproving design elements in every film, especially when CGI is involved. The artists didn't make any mistakes, they did what they were told to do.
Haven't seen this video when the discussion about Cats was relevant, but it's such a cool design at 11:30! I think maybe it will look less uncanny if expressions like blush just blend into the mask, like on top of fur and human skin, so the separation between skin and fur on the face will be less even. Like they do it in the cartoons if the anthropomorphic cat or bird blushes - red blush is displayed on top of their fur or feathers. Because if we choose to have life-like eyes and cat ears, which look functional for a viewer, it just adds uneasiness that there is such a clear distinction between the furry and human part of a character, especially on the face, so it could help to make it more "unclear" where human part ends and cat one begins.
They should have either:
1. Put the actors in costumes similar to those of the stage performance.
2. Make it a 2D animation that was stylistically the same as “The Aristocats” or “Cats Don’t Dance”.
The CGI and live action in general was a mistake and I’m getting kinda sick of both tbh.
Even Avatar made the navi look more cat-like than the CATS movie😂like, navis aren't even supposed to be cats but it still has more cat-like features than the design for the CATS movie

@@preciouslakez7735 the use of pop singers who expected everything to bend around them is one of the many many reasons it did not work! it was mostly the director, but also literally everything else was part of it. just animate the audio from the original musical recording with, like, cats what are somewhat anthropomorphized in their expressions and behaviors but are still quadrupedal. I'm not too knowledgeable about the technical process but I believe they digitally mapped out his face as he acted it so they could use many of his expressions on the dragon itself. If you check out a behind the scenes, it's super entertaining, you just see Cumberbatch crawling around and making these awesome faces

between this and the goofiness that is the DBH acting clips, i have concluded we need more motion capture if for nothing more than to get more silly shit like this
Cursed idea: CATS but everyone’s wearing a cat fursuit
that would be a tremendous improvment
Yeah at least it wouldn't be _as_ creepy
so..... the actual onstage cats musical??
an improvement in my opinion
Fursuits themselves aren't creepy, the fact that people willingly walk around in them is creepy
Ahh I love this design! It looks so cute and, execution-wise, it would be feasible and look so phenomenal and cute!
Isn’t it part of the show that the cats KNOW they’re putting on a show? So it’s completely perfect for them to have masks and look like performers because they know they’re performing
I don’t see why they didn’t just animate it and have it feel almost like Disney’s aristocats
Spielberg was going to do that in the 1990s but the studio closed and they made the 1998 movie
Apparently, T.S. Elliot's widow didn't allow it back in the day.
because it’s got no plot either? that’d be just as, if not more, boring
I think it’s just because you lose the dancing and the expression in the singing when you just make them cats. The plot is really weak, it’s more of a cabaret with a main goal rather than a story
Because the entire allure of Cats is the live, intricate dancing.
when she was circling parts that were uncomfortable, I'm surprised she didn't circle the whole thing

For cats they should’ve thought of the Lion King musical. Because in that musical the main character is the human version of a large cat, and I think the costume looked really nice and showed that the actor was a lion. Your interpretation really helped me not be scared of the movie anymore.
I have seen the broadway of the lion king and I agree the costume really showed that he was a lion I completely agree
What was wrong with the first sonic design was that they shrunk his eyes. Sonic has big almost diamond shapes eyes so it didn’t feel like our classic speedy hedgehog. That was cats first mistake too. The eyes were shrunken so it didn’t feel like a real cat.
Some people call the creepy sonic that people didn’t like “human teeth sonic” but the newer better sonic also has human teeth lol
But can you really fix this monstrosity?
Edit: Yes, Yes you can. They’re super cute~

Just *one* furry on the design team would have prevented this madness
They wouldn't have listened to the furry, we all know this.

Wait she has pet *MICE* ?! I freaking love mice! They're so cute 😍
@@47ratsinahoodie She has rats actually. Two if I'm correct
AoTako yes, she has two rats
@@NekoKumeika Rats are cute, too! I don't get the bad rep rats have. They just happened to spread a couple diseases a few times, so what? By that logic people should hate snakes since they're always biting people. Plus, I would kill for the flexibility of a rat.
Hooded Raire Same but my mom won’t let me have one.
LavenderTowne in 2020: "I didn't want to start off this year with a bad thing"
Me now: "Oh this, this will not be the worst thing in 2020... no no no no..."
i feel it they wanted to still use CGI on the face they could connect the furry mask to the skin because in (8:13) it looks more wolf-y and odd. It looks like an entirely different part, unconnected to the face, instead of part of the body
Lavandertowne: cats are cute
