    Add a front suspension tuning video for us as well as how to deal with a chassis thats twisting out of shape, and we will watch them. We have all seen unlevel wheelies as one side of the chassis squats while the other side lifts. We appreciate any info that helps keep our rides performing consistently. I've been trying to wrap my head around instant center for too long. This is by far the best explanation I've found. The part about the pinion climbing the ring made something click for me. When you demoed with the 12mm wrench it was cemented. Now I finally feel like I understand the basics of 4 link suspension.

    Absolutely love the video; thank you for taking the time to make it! 4 link geometry is something that I've tried really hard over the years to wrap my head around and this video does an amazing job explaining the key points with real world and scale examples.
    One thing that I don't see talked about very often is the front suspension on front solid axle rigs like Monster Max. I run RC rock crawlers and race RC Monster Trucks that use full 4 link front ends and I've had a hard time learning how the instant center from the front links interacts with the instant center of the rear links.

    Interesting stuff. In '65 I used to hang out at Goodies Speed Shop where Jim Liberman worked building custom gas-welded headers out of U-Tube bends for $125 + $1 for the tube cutting wheel. In any case, he also fabricated "lift kits" for street rods and also employed a lift kit for the '65 GTO funny car Brutus. I became a crewman and always marveled how Brutus would leave the line by lifting its rear and planting the tires into the asphalt Jim was a pretty smart guy at a very young age....kinda crazy too, but very intelligent.

    Best video I have seen on this! The model is sick! Really well done and then to prove it on Whistlendiesel is just the icing on the cake!
    I never understood track prep, you alluded to some of this and it helped a lot. My question is why do radials and big tires compete at the same track like in sick week? Shouldn’t it be prepped for the tire? Also street tires ruin the prep? Why can’t they run in sick week?

    • @ClapdOut
      @ClapdOut  Před 5 měsíci +2

      They TRY to cater to both types of vehicles. They try to run slick tire cars before they glue the hell out of it for the radial cars. So it is tricky to have a track that works really well for both. The street tires aren’t allowed because they wreck the starting line. Hard compounds and tread will dig and rip the rubber off the racing surface like a cheese grater and all that debris ends up on the track, under the tires, and you have a really crappy starting line for anybody.

    Back in the day (1980’s) we used to run a lift bar in a dirt track car where the axles were full spool.So the rotating force went forward along beside the drive shaft to a single compressible coil over shock absorber. It had the same effect as anti squat. In the interest of weight we also only ran three bars two lower one upper as the axle was not housed in a casing. Think sprint car quick change rear axle. This system would also create the effect of trying to push the axle into the dirt but basically lift the whole rear of the car.

    Also, I happen own a 76' Plymouth Fury, she has at least 3 different sizes in 2 standards of measurements mounting everything. I have to have a 6.5mm, 3/8", 11mm, 12mm, 1/2", 9/16" and 5/8" wrench just to change my mind. Hell my belt tensioner requires a 1/2", 5/8, and 12mm to unlock and adjusted with a 8mm...
    I miss my 94' Impala with a 10mm, 13mm, 14mm, 15mm and 17mm to strip her down to a rolling frame. She was so easy to work on, she removed her own drive shaft and rear axel once. Taught me about drive shaft loops also.

      cant say i can calculate the bar angle of a caltrac suspension but how im understand the function its like the radial setup shown in this video that the rear whants to be lifted and pushing the tyres down, the shorter the bars the faster the effect of the lifting force.
      the same is for slapper bars to use the torque from rear axle to react aginst the body of the car to push down the tyres.

    • @blacknzr1
      @blacknzr1 Před 5 měsíci

      @@extec101 the length isn't so much adjustable, you preload or have a gap. But the angle can be changed, steeper or flatter...this angle must somewhat change antiquated percentage but there's no top bar... if that makes sense.
